DISPLAY STAND Filed NOV. 16, 1931 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented Feb. 20, 1934 UNITED STATES DISPLAY STAND David F. Thomson, Melrose, Mass., assignor to the Forbes Lithograph Manufacturing Company, Boston, Mass., a corporation of Massachusetts Application November 16, 1931 Serial No. 575,170
6 Claims.
The invention relates to a display stand in the nature of a table display.
The object of the invention is to provide a table display simulating a counter on which 6 goods may be displayed with an attendant figure standing back of the counter.
The invention can best be seen and understood by reference to the drawings, in which Figure 1 shows the display stand in perspective.
Fig. 2 shows the same in vertical section.
Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. V
Fig. 4 a side elevation of a portion of the structure shown in Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a cross section on the line 55 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 6 is a cross section on the line 6-6 of Fi 2.
1 represents the back of'the stand consisting of a plate held in an upright or standing position by an easel 2 attached to its rear side. The back plate 1 comprises a base portion 1' and above the base portion a part 1" representing an attendant figure as of a person or other suitable matter.
Associated with the back plate 1 is an attached structure which co-operates with the base portion of the back plate 1 to simulate a counter. This attached structure comprises a front plate 3% 3 complementary to the base portion 1' of the back plate in general size, and is spaced therefrom and preferably parallelly arranged with relation thereto. The front plate has a cut-out opening 4 in it, the lower portion of the plate below the opening being preferably left intact.
Between the base portion of the back plate 1 and the front plate 3 are arranged shelves 5 and 6 lying respectively one above and the other below said opening in the front plate. 7
The shelf 5, generally rectangular in form, is provided along its front edge with an upturned flange '7. This flange is secured in any suitable manner to the back of the plate 3 at the top of this plate, the top edge of the flange lying flush with the top edge of the plate. At its back the shelf 5 is provided with tabs 8 which extend through slots 9 in the back plate 1. Thus secured the shelf 5 will lie below the top edge of the plate 3, the top edge portion of this plate form-'- ing a raised front edging to the shelf. The back plate 1 forms a raised back to the shelf. At its sides the shelf 5 is provided with upturned flanges 11 forming side edgings for the shelf. These side edgings are fixedly secured to maintain an upright position in the following manner: Extending from the ends of the flange 7 at the front of the shelf are straps 12. These straps, made flexible by scorings 13 in the material, are turned to extend by the outer sides of the side edgings with snug bearing against them. The straps 12 bear on their ends downturned tabs 14 and these tabs are turned, permitted by the flexibility of the material, to extend through openings 15 cut in the side edgings and thence turned to have snug bearing against the inner sides of said edgings below the openings in them. The cutting of the material to form the openings 15 in the side edgings is such as to leave fingers 16 and these fingers, after the interlocking of the straps with the side edgings as aforesaid, extend to cover the openings 15 and to bear against the tabs passed through the openings, thereby assisting in holding the straps and tabs carried by them securely in place. At their rear ends the side edgings 11 are provided with tabs 1'7 which extend through slots 18 cut in the back of the plate 1. Thus the side edgings of the shelf 5 are rigidly maintained in an upright position.
The shelf 6 is formed by a'portion of the material left from the cut-out 4 in the plate 3. A scoring 20 is formed in the plate 3 at the bottom of the cut-out and the cut-out portion is turned back to form the shelf 6 which extends to lie between the plate 3 at the bottom of the cut-out and the back plate 1 as previously explained The shelf.6 is supported by an easel the body 21 of which is secured tothe back lower portion of the plate 3, with wings 22 out-turned from the body and onto the top edges of which wings the shelf 6 is turned down to rest. The shelf is maintained in a downturned position by a flange 24 on the rear edge of the plate inturned by a scoring in the material to fit within slots 25 cut in the respective wings. At their rear the respective wings are provided with rearwardly extending arms 26 which enter slots 2'? cut in the back plate 1, these arms being provided with tabs 28 which look in behind said plate, thus securing the wings and attached plate 3 to the back plate 1 of the stand.
Thus ther is provided a table splay simulating a counte 'on which goods ma be displayed, with an atte dant figure standing back of said counter, the plate 3 and lower portion of the back plate 1 .parallelling the plate 3 with interposed shelves 5 and 6 forming the counter, while the upper portion of the back plate 1 may be m e as shown in the drawings to represent a per on or a tendant figure standing at the back of the the easel 2 may be folded flat against the back.
plate 1. As a result the display stand maybe shipped or stored in a flat condition, and when .desired for use may be readily assembled by hand without the use of tools.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States:
1. A display stand comprising a back plate, a front plate having an opening in it, a shelf between the two plates extending back from the bottom of said opening and consisting of material cut from the front plate in forming said opening, a winged support for the front plate below the opening in it and against the top edge of which said shelf has bearing, said winged support being secured to the back plate, means for fixing said shelf to said winged support, and a shelf above said opening connecting said front and back plates. 7
2.'A display stand comprising a back plate, a front plate having an opening in it, a shelf between the two plates extending back from the bottom ofsaid opening and consisting of material out from the front plate in forming said opening, a movable flange on the rear edge of said shelf, awinged support for. said shelf, said wing having a slot in it into. which said flange on the shelf fits when the shelf is bearing against said wing, said support being secured to the base portion of the back plate, and a shelf above said opening connectingsaid front and back plates.
v 3. 4. A display stand comprising a back plate, a front plate, a shelf between the two plates having an upturned flange along the front edge thereof secured to the front plate, means for securing the shelf to the back plate, side edgings to the shelf having openings in them, means for holding said side edgings in place including tabbearing straps on the ends of the flange forming the front edging to the shelf, said straps extending by the outer sides of the side edgings and with the tabs thereon extending through the 9g openings in the side edgings with bearing against 1 the inner sides of the side edgings below the openings in them, and fingers on the side edgings having extension over the openings in them and assisting in the retention of said tabs.
5. A display stand comprising a front plate having a display opening and a back plate spaced from the front plate, a lower shelf extending between the front and back plates to support objects displayed through said opening, wings 10g extending from the front to the back plate in inwardly spaced relation to the vertical side edges of the front plate and adapted to support said shelf and form a rigid connection between the front plate and the back plate, and a shelf above the front and back plates.
6. A display stand comprising a front plate having a display opening and a back plate spaced from the front plate, a lower shelf hinged to the front plate and extending towards the back plate to support objects displayed through said opening, wings extending from the front to the back plate in inwardly spaced relation to the vertical side edges of the front plate and adapted to sup- 5 port said shelf and form a. rigid connection between the front and back plate, and a shelf hinged to the front plate above said opening and connected to the back plate.
