Description

Feb. 13, 1934. w. SHIELDS LEATHER BRACE Original Filed July 25. 1935 31mm ZOWCZZ M Jbelafs,
Patented Feb. 13, 1934 units!) srar PATNT OFF1E LEATHER BRACE Lowell W. Shields, Rochester, N. Y., assignor to Hickok Manufacturing Company, Inc., Rochester, N. Y., a corporation of New York 2 Claims.
The invention relates to leather braces and is a division of an application filed by me and Edwin S. Mix, July 25, 1933, Serial No. 682,151.
The object of the present invention is to im- 6 prove the construction of leather braces, more particularly the construction of the shoulder portions or shoulder straps of the braces and to provide simple, strong and comparatively inexpensive leather braces which will present a high- 1y ornamental and attractive appearance particu larly in the body portions or shoulder straps It is also an object of the invention to enable the body portions or shoulder straps to be constructed with spaced marginal bead lines and a raised central panel portion adapted to lend themselves to contrasting colors whereby the appearance of the leather braces will be materially enhanced.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various 25 changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Figure 1 is an elevation of a pair of leather braces constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
In the accompanying drawing in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention 1 designates a pair of leather braces or suspenders comprising body portions or shoulder straps 2 of leather, an elastic back strap 3 40 and front and rear Suspender ends 4 and 5.
Each body portion or shoulder strap comprises a relatively thin main strip 6 of leather folded longitudinally at its side portions at pposite sides of the center to form side flaps '7 which terminate at opposite sides of the center of the main strip 6 to provide an intervening space. Each marginal flap is folded over a pair of spaced cords 8 which bulge the marginal flaps and cause the same to form exterior ornamental beads 9 arranged in pairs and located at the marginal portions of the shoulder straps or body portions of the leather braces.
The marginal flaps are secured upon the front faces of the main body strip 6 by inner and outer lines of stitching 10 and 11 which securely hold in place the side flaps and the cords which form the bead cores. The inner line of stitching also secures to the main body strip a centrally arranged panel strip 12 of leather preferably constructed of thicker material than the material 66 of the main strip. The panel strip forms a raised central portion and the main body strip provides depressed marginal portions. The main body strip 6 extends laterally beyond the side edges of the central panel strip and the beads 5 formed by the cores are located beyond the side edges of the central panel strip. The strips lend themselves to the use of leathers of diiferent colors or shades and while the strips may be of any contrasting shades, in practice it will be found is advantageous to employ a lighter shade of leather for the panel strip 12 and a darker shade for the main strip 6. The strips may be of various shades and colors and enable the body portions of the suspenders to present a highly ornamental and attractive appearance.
What is claimed is:-
1. Braces having body portions each comprising a main strip of material having its side portions folded inwardly along longitudinal lines to form side flaps spaced apart to provide an intervening space, longitudinal cores arranged be tween the flaps and the body portion of the main strip to form exterior projecting beads, and a raised centrally arranged panel strip bridging the space between the side flaps and secured upon the same.
2. Braces having body portions each comprising a main strip of material having its side portions folded inwardly along longitudinal lines to u form side flaps spaced apart to provide an intervening space, a pair of longitudinal cores arranged between each of the side flaps and the body portion of the main strip to form a pair of exterior marginal beads at each side of the body 5 portion, and a raised centrally arranged panel strip bridging the space between the side flaps and secured upon the same.
