Claims.
This invention relates to plumbing fixtures and particularly to a water supply fitting therefor.
An object of the present invention is the pro- 5 vision of a novel water supply fitting for tubs, bowls, sinks, lavatories, and the like through which the same may be rapidly supplied with water no-iselessly and without splash.
Other more specific objects and advantages will appear from the following description of two illustrative embodiments of the present invention.
In the accompanying drawings:--
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section,
of a porcelain bowl equipped with an integral water supply fitting embodying the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional detail, on a larger scale, of the supply fitting shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the supply fitting of Fig. 2. 1
Fig. 5 is a side elevation, partly in section, of an enameled metal bath tub equipped with a modified form of supply fitting embodying this invention.
Fig. 6 is a sectional detail, on a larger scale, of the supply fitting shown in Fig. 5.
Fig. 7 is a rear elevation of the fitting shown in Fig. 6.
Fig. 8 is a View similar to Fig. '7 with the attaching plate removed.
The porcelain bowl shown at 10 in Fig. 1 is equipped with an integral water supply fitting comprising a horizontally extended chamber 11 formed within the rear wall thereof. The forward wall 12 of the chamber terminates along its lower edge in a depending lip 13 which is 4.9 spaced slightly from the rear surface 14 of the bowl to form a horizontally extended narrow outlet 15 through which water from the chamber 11 is discharged in a relatively thin sheet-like stream in contact with and along the surface 14 of the bowl. The rear surface of the lip 13 is preferably curved, as indicated at 16.
A narrow balile -17, projecting from the forward wall 12, extends the full length of the chamber 11 and divides the same into upper and lower communicating compartments 18 and 19. The top face 20 of the battle is preferably inclined downwardly, as indicated, and terminates in a narrow edge 21 directed toward the rear wall 22 of the chamber.
A water supply channel 23 penetrates the rear wall 22 of the chamber intermediate the ends thereof, preferably above the baffle 17, so that the incoming stream is directed substantially horizontally into the upper compartment 18, and
so that the force of the stream is expended against the forward wall of that compartment above the bafile 17. Thereafter, the stream spreads in opposite directions lengthwise of the compartment 18, filling the same, and ultimately fiowing in a wide fiat stream and at a lower velocity into and through the relatively shallow lower compartment 19, from whence it emerges through the narrow outlet 15 onto the rear surface 14 of the bowl.
The inlet end of the channel 23 is preferably enlarged to form a socket 24 adapted to receive the end of a valve controlled supply pipe (not shown) suitable compressible packing being employed in the socket to form a watertight joint with the pipe.
The enameled metal bath tub 10' shown in Fig. 5 is equipped with a water supply fitting which is similar in many respects to the fitting above described. It includes a horizontally extended chamber 11" which is divided into upper and lower elongated communicating compartments 18' and 19 by a baffie 17' which extends the full length of the chamber and projects rearwardly from the forward wall thereof. A curved lip 16 spaced from the rear surface 14' of the tub provides a narrow horizontally extended outlet 15' for the lower compartment 19, and directs the discharge therefrom onto the surface 14'. The water discharges in a fiat stream onto the surface 14 and fiows downwardly thereon.
In this instance the rear of the chamber 11 is closed by a removable cover plate 22', secured thereto by appropriate means such as screws 25 which enter attaching lugs 26 formed in the chamber. Suitable packing material 27 is interposed between the plate 22' and its seat 28 to form a watertight joint.
A hollow boss 29, formed integral with the plate 22, contains a channel 23 through which water is directed substantially horizontally into the upper compartment 18' of the chamber above the baille 17. The lower end 24' of the channel is internally threaded or otherwise fashioned for connection with a valve controlled water supply pipe. (Not shown). The action of the water ithin the upper and lower compartments 18' and 19' is substantially the same as that hereinabove described in connection with the compartments 18 and 19 of the other fitting, and the water ultimately discharges noiselessly through the out- 9' let 15' in a wide fiat stream which follows the inner surface 14' of the tub without splashing.
It will be noted that before applying the cover plate 2.2 to its seat 28, the interior of the metal chamber 11' is accessible, so that the same may be readily painted to prevent rust.
Various changes may be made in either of the embodiments of the invention hereinabove specifically described without departing from or sacrificing the advantages of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
We claim:-
1. In a plumbing fixture the combination of a receptacle having an upright wall, and means for supplying water to said receptacle comprising a horizontally extended chamber, a baffle projecting from one wall of said chamber and extending lengthwise thereof to divide the same into upper and lower communicating compartments, means for discharging water into said upper compartment through the opposite wall of said chamber, said lower compartment being open to said receptacle, and a horizontal lip extending lengthwise of said lower compartment and spaced from said wall to deflect the water discharged from said lower compartment and to direct the same in a fiat, wide stream against said wall.
2. In a plumbing fixture the combination of a receptacle having an upright wall, and means for supplying water to said receptacle comprising a horizontally extended chamber having a discharge opening at one side of the bottom thereof substantially coextensive with the length of said chamber, a horizontally extended lip covering said opening and spaced from said wall to direct the discharge from said chamber against said wall, a supply channel penetrating the other side of said chamber, and a horizontally extended baflie interposed between said supply channel and said discharge opening to dissipate the force of the liquid stream supplied through said channel before the liquid reaches said discharge opening.
3. In a plumbing fixture the combination of a receptacle having an upright wall, and means for supplying water to said receptacle comprising a horizontally extended chamber having a horizontal outlet substantially coextensive with the length of said chamber at one side of the bottom thereof, a horizontally extended lip covering said outlet and spaced from said wall to direct the discharge from said outlet against said wall, a horizontally extended baffle in said chamber above said outlet, said bafiie having an upper surface inclined downwardly toward the opposite side of said chamber, and a channel penetrating said opposite side of said chamber above said bafiie for directing a stream of water thereinto.
4. In a plumbing fixture the combination of a receptacle having an upright wall, and means for supplying water to said receptacle comprising a horizontally extended chamber having a bottom outlet adjacent said wall, said outlet extending horizontally and substantially coextensive with the length of said chamber, a horizontally extended lip covering said outlet and spaced from said wall to direct the discharge from said outlet against said wall, a plate removably attached to saidchamber to close one side thereof, a water supply channel penetrating said plate, and a baiile within said chamber effective to break the force of the water stream admitted through said channel so that said water passes at lower velocity through said outlet.
5. In a plumbing fixture the combination of a receptacle having an upright wall, and means for supplying water to said receptacle comprising a horizontally extended chamber having a horizontally extended outlet at one side and adjacent the bottom thereof, a horizontal lip covering said outlet and effective to direct the discharge from said outlet against said wall, a relatively narrow supply channel penetrating the other side of said chamber, and means within said chamber for receiving the impact of the stream of water admitted through said channel and for spreading the same longitudinally of said chamber prior to reaching said outlet.
