Description

TERMINAL CLAMP Filed Aug. 23. 1932 ATTORNEYS Patented Jan. 30, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE of one-half to Angeles, Wash.
Charles W. Greenlee, Port Application August 23, 1932. Serial No. 630,097
1 Claim.
This invention relates to battery terminal clamps, and its general object is to provide a clamp of the wedge type, that can be associated with a battery post in a manner to set up a positive gripping action, is composed of minimum parts, is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to operate, and extremely efii cient in operation and service.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, tobe here-.
inafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:-
Figure l is a fragmentary top plan view illustrating the application of my clamp to a battery post.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken approximately on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view of one section of my clamp.
Figure 4 is a perspective section thereof.
Figure 5 .is a side elevation of the clamp.
Figure 6 is a top plan view illustrating a slightly modified'form.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the letter A indicates a battery that is provided with the usual post B adapted to receive the clamp 35 which forms the subject matter of the present invention.
It will be noted that'the clamp is made up of two sections, one ofwhichis clearly shown in view oi the wedge Figure 3 and includes a body 1 having formed with one end a cable sleeve 2 that is disposed at right angles with respect to the body, and the opposite end of the body has formed therewith a post collar 3 which of course is adapted to receive the post B as clearly shown in Figure 2.
The body is provided with a channel made up of side walls and an inclined wall that terminates at one end into the postcollar and merges in close proximity to the cable sleeve at its opposite end. The body is provided with an oblong bore 4 that extends through the inclined wall and the upper end of the body as best shown in Figure 2.
Cooperating with the channel and particularly with the inclined wall thereof is a wedge 5 having an inclined wall 6 substantially co-extenwith an inclined wall mounted for slidable move-- sive and engageable with the inclined wall of the channel, and the wedge 5 is provided with a grooved face 7 curved to follow the curvature of the post B for engagement therewith as will be apparent. It will be further noted that the wedge 5 is provided with a threaded bore 8 for the purpose of threadedly receiving the threaded shank of a screw bolt 9. The shank passes through the oblong bore 4 and is movable longitudinally thereof to move the wedge accordg ingly and in the direction of the post so as to set up a gripping action between the post, post collar and wedge when the screw bolt is screwed downwardly into the threadedbore 8, as will be apparent. 7
In Figure 6 I have illustrated a slightly modifled form of the invention and which shows the cable sleeve arranged in alignment with the body 1. Otherwise the structure is similar to that disclosed in the remaining ilguresof the drawing.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combio nation and arrangement of the several parts. provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is:
A battery terminal clamp comprising a body provided with a channel including side walls and .an inclined wall, a cable sleeve formed with one end of said body, a battery post collar formed with the opposite end thereof, said inclined wall extending the entire depth of the channel and terminates at one end in close proximity to the post collar and merges into the cable sleeve at its opposite end said body having an oblong bore arranged in the inclined wall, a wedge provided ment on the inclined wall of the channel and being substantially coextensive therewith, said wedgebeing provided with a threaded bore, a screw bolt having its shank extending through the oblong bore and threadedly received in the threaded bore for moving the wedge in gripping engagement with a battery post, and said wedge being provided with a rounded groove engage able with said post and following the curvature thereof.
