Application April 10, 1933. Serial No. 665,434
1 Claim. (Cl. 81-90) The invention relates to a wrench and more especially to a hose Wrench.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a wrench of this character, wherein a substantially half-circular jaw is formed, the same being provided with seats for accommodating the lugs diametrically opposed upon a coupling collar or sleeve upon a hose so that the sleeve or collar can be conveniently turned for the coupling or uncoupling of sections of the hose or a nozzle or other part therewith.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a wrench of this character, wherein one of the seats for the lug of the coupling collar or sleeve is of such character as to grip the lug to prevent the sliding of the Wrench during the use thereof.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a wrench of this character, wherein the same is of spanner type for use in coupling and uncoupling hose, more especially those employed by fire departments and is of novel construction to assure its convenient manipulation and eniciency without liability of accidental release during the use of such wrench.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a wrench of this character which is extremely simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and satisfactory in its operation, strong, durable, convenient for application and removal with dispatch to and from a coupling of a hose, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which disclose the preferred embodiment of the invention, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure l is an elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with the invention, showing the same in initial position for engagement with a hose coupling, the latter being shown by dotted lines.
Figure 2 is a similar View looking toward the other side of the wrench, the same being partly broken away and in its final position for the turning of the coupling.
Figure 3 is a top edge view of the wrench.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary plan View of one end of the jaw of the wrench.
Figure 5 is an elevation of the other end of the wrench showing the lug seated therein.
Figure 6 is a vertical sectional View through the end shown in Figure 5.
Figure 7 is a sectional View on the line '7-7 of Figure 6.
Figure 8 is a view similar to Figure 2 showing a slight modification of wrench.
Similar reference characters indicate correspending parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring to the drawings in detail, particularly Figures 1 to '7 inclusive, the wrench comprises an arm 10 constituting the leverage handle and in this instance the same is tapered in one direction so that the arm will be gradually increased in size from its free extremity to the substantially circular-shaped jaw 11 at the other end of said arm.
The jaw 11 has formed at diametrically opposite points the eye 12 having the elongated slot 13 and the fork 14 respectively, these constituting seats for the lugs 15 of a hose coupling 16, the lugs 15 being diametrically disposed thereon. One lug 15 is received in the slot 13 in the eye 12 while the fork 14 straddles the diametrically opposed lug and such last named lug becomes seated therein. In this application of the wrench the coupling 16 can be readily turned.
In the fork 14 is arranged a spring retaining clip which is in the form of an inverted substantially U-shaped spring wire 17 having its limbs 18 outwardly converging in the direction of the open end of the fork. These limbs at their outer ends are formed with outturned portions 19 which are fitted in suitable guideways 20 in said fork. The clip is seated within a clearance channel 21 in the fork 14. The clip will engage a lug 15 and the latter will be held within the fork 14 by said clip and in this fashion the wrench is prevented from accidental detachment when applied to the coupling 16 for the turning thereof as should be clearly obvious.
In Figure 8 of the drawings there is shown a slight modification, wherein the leverage handle 22 of the wrench has formed therein a nut holding socket or recess 23 provided as usual with the plural fiat walls.
What is claimed is: Y
A wrench of the kind specified comprising a tapered arm constituting the leverage handle and having a substantially circular-shaped jaw at its wider end, a slotted lug merging into the jaw at one end, a fork merging into the jaw at its other end, and an inverted substantially U- shaped inherently resilient and normally contracted clip operatively conned within said fork.
