Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RALPH M. M'UNROE, OF EDGEWATER, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN BARRELS FOR HOLDING VOLATILE LIQUIDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 194,529, dated August 2S, 1877; application iled March 17, 1877.
To all'. whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, RALPH M. MUNROE, of the village of Edgewater, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Kegs or Barrels, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specication, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improvement in kegs or barrels or similar vessels, especially such as are adapted to the containing of volatile uids 5 and consists ot' a double barrel or keg formed of two laminae or sheets of wood,- and also of a double head or double heads dovetailed into the same.
Double barrels have previously been made ot' staves, but none have been made of a single piece or of a pair of sheets of wood compressed together with an intervening insoluble layer of glue or other .similar substance, which is an important part of my invention.
In the drawing, A represents the external sheet or lamina of wood, and B the internal lamina, which have been compressed together, and hold in their ends the dovetailed heads C and D, which are prevented from slipping or proaching sides. or ends of the barrel. Be-
tween these two heads, as well as between the sides of the barrel, a sufcient amount of glue or other similar substance is placed to make the whole structure firm, and also to render it insoluble to petroleum or other vollatile Huid.
These barrels may be made in a Wyckoff or similarcompressing-machine. Itisplain, like wise, that only one head need be placed in position, in which case the other would not need to be dovet-ailed.
I claim- As a new article of manufacture, a double keg or barrel with an intervening layer of glue, or other equivalent substance, when the said double barrel is formed of two sheets or laniinae ot' wood, compressed together, in combination with a dovetailed head or heads which are firmly held in position by means of the approaching ends ot' the barrel, substantially as described.
