In the body pillar` 1 of an automobile I provide suitable notches and depressionsfor the reception of the latch casing 2 of the improvement. 1 The latch casing, for the sake of cheapness is stamped from a metal plate to provide a fiat body portion 3 offset or formed with a flange 4, adjacent to one of its ends, the said oisetportion merging into an outwardly directed plate or flange 5. The body 3, at its 'rear edge and at the center thereof, is reduced and is formed with an inwardly directed plate or iiange 6 that is parallel with the part 4 and which part 6 merges into an inwardly directed plate or flange 7. Between the flange 7 and the 4face of the casing there is pivoted, as at 8, the inner end of the shank of the latch element of the improvement. The shank 9 of the latch is received through a suitable opening 10 in the offset or flanged portion 4 of the casing, so that the head of the latch will ride against the outwardly directed short flange 5. The head 11 of the latch is widened outwardly from the shank 9 and is thickened, the outer edge of the head being rounded, as at 12, and the active face or lower edge of the head is formed with a substantially V-shaped notch 13 and the inner straight surface of the head is for distinction indicated by the numeral 14. The shank normally rests on the upturned'end of the wall that provides a substantially U-shaped pocket 14' which is directed from the part 4 into the body of the casing and the body oflthe casing is provided with an opening that surrounds the pocket. The lower wall of thev pocket has an opening therethrough for the reception oi the upper end of a holder member 15, the said holder having flanges 16 which contact with the lower wall of the pocket 14'. The lower and opposite wall of the holder member is rounded and the holder member receives therein a compressible buffer 16' which is preferably of rubber, and which is projected through an opening therefor in the body 3 of the casing 1.

An object of the invention is the provision of what I will :term a body lock, inasmuch as the lock ls installed in the pillar of the automobile and the bolt member, which is engaged by the latch bolt of the lock, is carried by the door, and wherein the construction is such that the door will close in aneasy manner, be electively held in locked position, but permitted to partly open without further swinging thereof and in which the lock may be operated either by the occupant of the vehicle or the driver. The invention will be fully and comprehensively understood from a consideration of the following detailed description when read in connection with the accompanying drawings which form part of the application, with the understanding, however, that the improvementis capable of extended application and is not coniined to the exact showing of the drawings nor to the precise construc-l tion described and, therefore, such changes and modifications may be made therefrom as do not affect the spirit of the invention nor exceed the scope thereof as expressed in the appended claim.

fiat portion or flange which is likewise let in the door. `The plate 19 is provided with suitable openings for the reception of screws or like securing elements. The outer face of the plateis centrally formed with a transverse enlargement that aiords a keeper. 'The end of the keeper, in a line with the flange 20, is formed with an upwardly directed lip 21, the outer edge of which is rounded'and the inner wall of which is concaved, as at 22, to the upper angle face 23 of the bolt. The `outer face ofthe ilange 20 has arranged thereon the rounded end 24 on the shank 25 of the latch release. The outer end of the shank is formed with a head portion 26. The head is extended outwardly from the shank and the lower wan lof the said head is rounded, as at 2'?. The
inner rounded portion 24 of the shank 25 has a squared opening therethrough, and the said opening is surrounded by a flange or extension which is round in plan and which has its inner end formed with a disc head 25 to contact with the inner face of the flange 20, and whereby the latch release is pivotally supported on the flange 20. Having one of its ends fixed in a suitable opening in the flange 20 and arranged around, and preferably in a groove in the periphery of the part 24 of the shank 25 there is a curved spring 26. Ihe second end of the spring is preferably received in a depression or socket in the shank 25, and the curved or arched spring 26 normally swings the latch release so that the lower edge of its shank 25 will contact with the shoulder provided by a ange 27 formed on the outer and lower edge of the plate 19. Through the squared opening in the rounded end 24 of the latch release and through the door there is passed a. spindle 28 for an operating handle 29. 'I'he shank 28 may be passed through the door and may be engaged by an outer handle if desired.
In operation the latch is normally sustained, through the medium of the C-spring 17, in the positions disclosed by Figures 2 and 3 of the drawings. The door, when swung closed will have the reduced end of the body or bolt 21 ride under and partly elevate the latch 11 in entering the pocket 14. The concaved wall 22 of the bolt will cause the latch to ride upwardly thereon which permits of the outer and straight or active end of the latch being received in the notch 13 and contacted by the walls provided thereby or which, 84 when the door is to be fully closed, is brought into contacting engagement with the shoulder 12 of the said-latch so that the door may beheld partly open or fully closed. 'I'he buffer member '16 prevents rattling of the door and affords a tight l 8l joint between the door and the body. 12. To open the door the handle 29 is swung which will impart an .upward swinging to the latch release, causing the head thereof which normally lies beneath the head of the latch to raise the said latch out of engagement with the bolt. When a single operating handle 29 is employed the door cannot be opened from the outside of the car. and the said handle must be operated by either the driver or the occupant of the vehicle.
Should it be desired to operate the latch, to
Arelease the door without the employment of the handle 29, an angle handle member 30 may be pivotally secured to the shank 9` of the latch and when an upward pull is exerted thereon the latch will be brought out of engagement with the lock.
It is believed the foregoing description will fully and clearly set forth the construction and advantages of the improvement to those skilled in the art so that no further detailed description will be required.
Having described the invention, I claim:
A locking mechanism including a casing adapted to be secured in a relatively stationary member and having an offset pocket wall, a latch bolt pivoted inthe casing and normally resting on and extending beyond the pocket wall and adapted to co-operate with a keeper to be secured on a door and pass into the pocket wall to be engaged by the bolt when the door is closed, a'rock shaft 115 mounted in the door adjacent the' keeper, a lifter secured on the rock shaft and lying alongside the keeper and disposed below the bolt, and means for rocking the shaft whereby the lifter will release the bolt from the keepe CHARLES W.
