My invention relates broadly to drop-in registering devices for printers use, with which printing plates may be heldin registered position in a' foundation support having dovetailed grooves therein.
.In a co-pending application Serial No.351,049, filed March 29, 1929, 1 have discloseda registering device in which parts of the body of a dropin hook are so formed. that one side of thebody may be aligned with one side wall of a dovetail groove, and another side oi-the body vmay be aligned with the opposite wall of the groove. It is an object of my inventionto provide in the i6 broad type ofdevice disclosed in this co-pending application for cooperating. members one having a wall which will register with one wall of a foundation plate groove, and another hi l n a wall which will register with the opposite wall of the groove, which members will occupy a minimum of lengthwithinuthe groove so that the devices may be positioned as close together as is necessary. V
Another object is the provision of aregistering device in which the device may be inserted on a key and then positioned within a mounting groove without other manipulations beingnecessary than the turning of the key which guides the device into the groove andalso clamps it within the groove. j r
Specifically it is an object of my'invention' to provide a clampingjaw havingyan adjustment screw having a, shoulder seated against: an annular flange surrounding an aperture in the jaw,
- and with the threaded part of the screw adjustably retaining a clamping block member which is held in spaced position for a cooperating block memberr The above and'other objects to which reference will be made in the ensuing disclosure I acdevice.

The side walls 3 of the grooves are inclined outwardly from top to bottom so that when a drop-in hook is once within the groove, it may be readilyclamped or, locked withinv the groove by either, pushing upwardly on the body pivoted jaw member having an inclined clamping face 5 which engages the inclined edge 6 of to hold the the printing plate. The jaw also has what might be termed a back portion '7. .. The threads 13 of the screw engage the threads 14a of a lower clamping block member 14. The member 14 has tracks 15 extending in alignment .with grooves. 16in an ,upper clamping block member 17. Relative movement of the two clamping bl0cks.=t o' ward the clamping jaw widens out the T distance betweenthe face 18 of block member 17 and theface 19 of block member 14. This is because the direction of the tracks and grooves corresponds to one of the slanting faces. Theface 18 bears against one wall of a foundation'plate groove and the face 19 bears against the opposite wall.
There is a thin plate 20 mounted on the side of V the block 17 adjacent the under surface of the clamping jaw. This plate has an aperture therein which embraces an annular groove 21 in the neck of the screw. As a modification of this method of causing relative movement of the two block members, I may also or instead provide springs such as are indicated at 22 in Figure 6 which maintain the spacing of the blocks.
To insert the device the key is inserted in the hole in the screw and the screw is'rotated until i the blocks are far enough apart to allow for insertion within a groove. The key is then turned clockwise, as indicated in the figures, and the its iio
block members are thus wedged within the groove. It is preferable to have the aligning tracks inclined, as otherwise the faces of the blocks would remain the same.
While I have only disclosed one specific type of drop-in hook embodying my invention, modifications in the particular arrangement for aligning the clamping members will occur to others skilled in the art, but insofar as such modified structures incorporate the mechanical principle involved, I consider the same within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I.
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:-- a
1. A printers registering device of the character specified comprising in combination with a clamping jaw, relatively movable wedging and clamping members for insertion within a groove of a foundation support, said members being provided with interconnecting guiding means for restricting the relative movement of said members to a plane inclined to the face of the support, and 'means for maintaining the spacing of said members.
2. In a device of the character specified,'a jaw member having an aperture therein, wedgingand clamping members, a screw extending within said aperture, one of said wedgingmembers having a threaded aperture to seat said screw, and means for maintaining said wedging and clamping members in spaced relation. 1 I 1 3. Ina device of the character specified, a jaw memberhaving an aperture therein, wedging and clamping members, a screw extending within said aperture, one of said wedging members having a threaded aperture to seat said screw, and means for maintaining said wedging and clamping members in spaced relation, and means for guiding one of said members in a plane inclined relative to said other member.
51, A printers registering device having a jaw and clamping wedge members, a screw for causing relative movement of said members, said screw provided with means to receivea key, and means for adjusting the relative position of said members to reduce the combined width of said members so that they may be inserted within a foundation plate dovetailed groove, and means for maintaining said members in spaced relative position.

In a printers registeringdevice, a plate clamping jaw, a pair of wedging members below the jaw, and a screw threaded into one member and rotatable in and bearing down 'on the jaw, said one member having wedging contactunder the other member whereby the members are caused to expand or permitted to contract transversely as the screw is turned one way or the other, said members being shaped to wedge under the undercut sides of a groove in a plate support when expanded, and to permit their withdrawal from the groove when contracted, and means causing said other member and the jaw to follow the axial movement of the screw for contraction.
6. In a printers registering device, a plate clamping jaw, a pair of wedging members below the jaw, a screw threaded into one member and rotatable in and bearing down on the jaw, said one member having wedging contact under the other member whereby the members are caused to expand or permitted to contract transversely as the screw is turned one way or the other, said members being shaped to wedge under the undercut sides of a groove in a plate support when expanded, and to permit their withdrawal from the groove when contracted, and having mutually engaging means guiding their relative movement for contraction, and means causing said other member and the jaw to follow the axial movement of the screw for contraction.
7. In a printers registering device, a plate clamping jaw, a pair of wedging members below the jaw, and a screw threaded into one member and limiting separation of the jaw and the other member axially of the screw but permitting rotation of the jaw relative to the two members and to the screw, said one member having wedging contact under the other member whereby the members arecaused to expand or permitted to contracttransversely as said screw is turned one way'or the other, said members being shaped to wedge under the undercut sides of a groove in a plate support when expanded, and to permit their withdrawal from the groove when contracted.
8. In a printers registering device, a plate clamping jaw, a pair of wedging members below the jaw, and a screw threaded into one member and limiting separation of the jaw and the other member axially of the screw but permitting their rotation relative to each otherand to the screw, said one member having wedging contact under the other member whereby the members are caused to expand or permitted to contract transversely as said screw is turned one way or the other, said members being shaped to wedge under the undercut sides of a groove in a plate support when expanded, and to permit their withdrawal from the groove when contracted, and having mutually engaging means holding them together and guiding their relative movement for contraction.
