narily termed transfers, which are issued to passengers by said conductors, thepredominant object of the invention being to provide an improved device 'of this type which is of simple construction and is convenient in operation to permit the tearing off of sections of a pad of transfers in a precise manner in order to cause the issued transfers to impart certain information to subsequent conductors to whom said transfers are handed for passage.

In the drawing, wherein is shown for the purpose of illustration, merely, one embodiment of the invention, A designates my improved transfer holder generally. The transfer holder includes trated in Fig. 2. The base plate 1 is provided with a tongue 3 which is preferably, though not necessarily, formed integral with said plate, said tongue "being offset slightly from the plane of the plate 1 so that it may be hooked on a belt or other support on the person of a conductor using the holder. The base plate 1 with the side wall portions 2 thereof provides a channel-like structure which receives a pad B of transfers, the side wall portions 2 preventing movement of the pad of transfers transversely of said base plate while the absence of end walls of any sort in the channellike structure permits free movement of the pad of transfers longitudinally of the base plate 1.
Supported by the base plate 1 of the improved holder A is an upper plate 4 which is provided with downturned side wall portions 5. The side wall portions 5 of the upper plate 4 at the respective sides of said upper plate are arranged adjacent to the side wall portions 2 of the base plate 1 at the corresponding sides of the holder, and pivot pins 6 are extended through apertures formed in the associated side wall portions, as shown most clearly in Fig. 2, whereby said upper Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on line 22 of plate 4 is pivotally connected to said base plate 1'. Each of the pivot pins 6 comprises a portion of reduced diameter which extends through the side wallportions 2 and 5 of the base plate and upper plate, respectively, and a portion 7 of enlarged 6 diameter which extends inwardly from said reduced portion. Also, each pivot pin is provided with a shoulder 7' at one end of the portion '7 which contacts with the inner face of the asso-' ciated sidewall portion 2 of the base plate, and a head portion 8 at the opposite end of said portion 7, and the outer end of the reduced portion of said pivot pin is riveted over as indicated at 9, so
as to confine a washer 10 which is interposed bee tween said riveted over portion and the outer face v of the adjacent'wall portion 5 of the upper plate 4. Arranged about the portion 7 of each pivot pin is a torsional spring 11 which tends to move the forwardendportion of the upper plate 4 toward the base plate 1, one end portion of said torsional spring beingin contact with 'the upper plate 4 and the other end portion, thereof being in contact with a projection 12 formed on the adjacent side wall portion 2 of the'base plate 1.
The rear portion of the upper plate 4'is preferably in substantial parallelism with respect to the base plate 1, and an intermediate portion. 4' of said upper plate is inclined as shown in Fig. 2, from the rear portion of said upper plate, which is located a substantial distance from the base plate 1, to the forward portion 13 thereof, which is located relatively close to and substantially parallel with said base plate. The forward portion 13 of the upper plate 4 is provided with a pair of downturned portions 14located at oppo-' site sides of said portion 13 which embrace the forward portion of the base plate 1 and thereby provide a guideway for the pad of transfers B which is closed at the top, bottom, and ends.
Supported by the forward portion 13 of the upper plate 4 is a tearing plate 15 which is pro vided with a sharp edge 15'. The tearing plate 15 is slidable transversely of the forward portion 13 of the upper plate 4, said tearing plate being provided with an upstanding pin 16 which extends through a slot 17 formed transversely of said forward portion 13 of the upper plate 4. The pin 16 at its upper end is provided with a knob 18 whereby movement of the tearing plate transversely of theportion 13 of the upper plate 4 is facilitated. Preferably the tearing plate 15 is provided with an angular edge portion 19, whereby the portions 15 and 15 of the tearing edge 15' are offset from each other, as shown in Fig. 1. The downturned portions 14 on the forward portion 13 of the upper plate 4 are cut out at 14' to permit the tearing plate to move transversely of said forward portion 13.
In the use of my improved transfer holder the upper plate 4 is pivoted about the pivot pins 6 against the action of the torsional springs 11 so as to elevate the forward portion of said upper plate with respect to the base plate 1. The pad of transfers B is then introduced into place on said base plate between the side wall portions 2 of said base plate. The torsional springs 11 are then permitted to move the forward portion of the upper plate downwardly, so that the tearing plate 15 is caused to contact with the uppermost transfer of the pad of transfers. The particular character of the transfers issued by a user of the improved device disclosed herein is indicated by tearing said transfers at different places along the lengths thereof, and the proper location of the tear is arrived at by moving the pad'of transfers longitudinally of the holder A to bring the location of the tear at the tearing edge 15 of the tearing plate .15. Also, the torn edge of an issued transfer corresponds in shape to the tearing edge 15' of the tearing plate 15, and the precise location of the angular portion of the tear at the edge of the transfer which corresponds to the angular portion 19 of the tearing edge 15 of said tearing plate transversely of the transfer imparts information as to the nature of the transfer. In the use of my improved transfer holder, therefore, the pad of transfers B is shifted longitudinally of the holder to properly locate the tearing edge 15 of the tearing plate 15 lon- -'gitudina1ly of the transfer to be issued, after which the tearing plate 15 may be shifted transversely of the transfer to properly locate the angular portion of the tear, corresponding to the portion '19 of the tearing edge of the tearing plate, with respect to the transfer being issued. The transfer being issued may then be torn from the pad along the tearing edge of the tearing plate 15, wherebya properly characterized trans.- fer will be produced.
The improvedtransfer holder is soshaped that tance between the base plate 1 and the upper plate 4 rearwardly of the forward portion 13 of said upper plate, a housing is provided for the stubs B of transfers previously issued. Furthermore, as already stated, the holder may be attached to a belt or other support on the person of the user thereof by hooking the tongue 3 over such support.
I claim:
1. A device of the class described comprising a base plate, side wall portions formed on said base plate, a pivoted plate associated with said base plate, extensions on said pivoted plate arranged for cooperation with said side wall portions, means extended through said extensions and. said side wall portions for pivotally conmeeting said pivoted plate to said base plate, extensions on said pivoted plate which embrace a portion of said base plate, and a tearing plate supported by said pivoted plate, said tearing plate being movable transversely of said base plate and said pivoted plate. A device of the class described comprising a base plate, side wall portions formed on said base plate, a pivoted plate associated'with said base plate,"extensions on said pivoted plate arranged for cooperation with said side wall portions, means extended through said extensions and said side wall portions for pivotally connecting said pivoted plate to said base plate, extensions on said pivoted plate which embrace a 110 portion of said base plate, and a tearing plate supported by said pivoted plate, said tearing plate being slidably connected to said pivoted plate and being movable transversely of said base plate and said pivoted plate, the last-fmentioned extensions on said pivoted plate being cut away to provide recesses through which said tearing plate may move when same is shifted transversely of said base plate and pivoted plate.
