Description
Dec. 12, 1933. R, w. SEALE SANITARY ACCESSORY FOR COMMODES Filed May 26, 1932 .1 l I l I I I I l I ll 3 E035 W. SEA LE Patented Dec. 12, 1933 UNITED STATES OFFICE 7 1,938,867 SANITARY ACCESSORY FOE. COMMODES Ross Waldemar Scale, Huntington, W. Va. Application May 26, 193-2. Serial No. 613,727
' 3 Claims. (01. 4 -254) The present invention appertains to an accessory for water closets, commodes and the like and more particularly to a novel device for facilitating. the correct posture of persons using the L. closet and the like.
It is a well known fact that seats of toilets are not conducive to persons to assume a correct sitting position and that when persons do assume a correct position while using the toilet, that certain muscles are brought into action,'whioh facilitates the proper evacuation of the bowels. It is also known that where persons continue to assume a correct position on the toilet, that constipation and other kindred ailments are eliminated.
It is an object of my invention to provide an accessory for water closets, commodes and the like, whereby persons can obtain the desired correct crouching position, so that a natural evacua- Y tion can be had without straining, the device preventing constipation, hemorrhoids, hernia and other ailments caused by straining at the stool.
Another object of my invention is the provision of an accessory for water closets, commodes and the like, embodying raised foot rests disposed on each side of the bowl, whereby the users knees will be held in a raised position, so that the desired crouching posture will be had.
Another object of my invention is the provision of an accessory for water closets, commodes and the like, so constructed that the device is portable and may be carried from place to place with ease.
A further salient obj ct of my invention is the provision of a closet accessory, which can be handled as a single unit and which is so constructed that the same can be readily associated with a water closet, commode or the like and adjusted to the particular size or configuration of the bowl.
A further salient object of my invention is the provision of a water closet accessory, one that can be used in public places, hotels, depot waiting rooms, comfort stations and the like that is absolutely sanitary, thus eliminating the danger of contracting diseases.
A further salient object of my invention is the provision of a closet accessory in which the buttock does not come in contact with the seat of the closet, commode or the like.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a water closet accessory of the above character, which will be durable and eiiicient in use, one that will be simple and easy to manufacture and one which can be placed upon the market at a small cost.
With these'and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arran ement and formation of parts as will be hereinalter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a top plan of my improved device.
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the device, and
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the same.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 5 generally indicates my improved accessory for toilet bowls, cornmodes and the like. The device be constructed from any desired material, but preferably of metal suitably treated to present an attractive sanitary appearance. 7
As shown, the same comprises like companion side 6 and 7, which are adapted to be disposed on opposite sides of the water closet bowl. These side frames can be formed from strap material and each embody a U shaped support 8, including the parallel uprights or legs 9 and the connecting bottom strip 10, which is bent as shown in Figure 3, forming the base members 16 for engaging the floor.
The upper ends of the uprights or legs 9 can be bent laterally, as at 11, to provide attaching Bi dly secured to the ears 11, such as by spot welding or the like is the foot rest 12. Thus the foot rest 12 connects the upper ends of the uprights of its frame together.
Each side frame is further braced by a cross strap 13, which is rigidly connected at its ends to its uprights. Secured to or formed on each cross strap 13 is the inwardly directed arm 14. The inner ends of the arms 14 of the frames 6 and 7 are conn cted together by a suitable pivot pin 15, so that the frames can be swung relative to one another. A brace 16 joins the adjacent arm and bottom piece 10, so as to further add rigidity to the device. Y
In applying my device to a water closet, commode or the like, the frames 6 and '7 are placed on opposite sides of the bowl, with the arms 14 in front thereof. As shown, the foot rests 12 angle outwardly in opposite directions and the 100 arms 14 are positioned well forwardly of the transverse center of the foot rests. The inner edges of the rests 1?. at the rear ends thereof are tapered as at 1'7, which allows the rests 12 to be fitted snugly the bowl. Obviously, by 0 swinging the frames 6 and 7 on their pivots 14, the device can be readily adjusted to accord with the type of bowl, the same is to be associated with.
When a person is using the closet, commode or 110 the like, the feet of the person are placed on the rests 12. This will elevate the knees of the user and the user will assume a crouching position, which has been found to be best for proper and easy bowel evacuation.
Changes in detail may be made without departing from the spirit. or scope of the invention, but what I claim as new is:-
1. A sanitary accessory for water closets, comprising'a pair of like companion side frames for disposal on opposite sides of the bowl of the closet, diverging foot rests connected with the frames, and means pivotally connecting the frames together, whereby the same can be swung toward and away from the opposite sides of the bowl.
2. A sanitary accessory for water closets, comprising a pair of like side frames for disposition on opposite sides of the bowl of the water closet, foot rests rigidly connected to the frames arranged in diverging relation, and means pivotally connecting said frames together whereby the same can be swung toward and away from the closet bowl, the rear inner edges of the foot rest being cut at an angle to permit the close engagement of the foot rests with the bowl.
3. A sanitary accessory for water closets, comprising a pair of like side frames for engagement on opposite sides of the bowl of the closet, each of said frames being a U shape and including spaced uprights and a connecting floor engaging bottom piece, a foot rest connecting the upper ends of the uprights together, a cross piece connecting the uprights together between the foot rest and bottom piece, an inwardly projecting arm secured to the cross piece of each frame, and means pivotally connecting the inner ends of the frames together.
