CIGAR OR CIGARETTE ASH TRAY Original Filed Sept. 11, 1951 Jig-- 'fillllllllll n 6 5 55min Z; 90155 Patented Dec. 5, 1933 UNITED STATES CIGAR B CIGARETTE ASH TRAY William L. Scott, Pittsburgh, Pa.
Application September 11, 1931, Serial No. 562,337 Renewed February 20, 1933 2 Claims.
The invention relates to a cigar or cigarette ash tray and has for its primary object to provide a device of this character, wherein its lid or cover is so constructed to provide rests for 5 cigars or cigarettes and these being in the form of chutes or troughs, so that when a cigar or cigarette is held therein while burning the ashes or waste thereof will gravitate and fall within the device and this action will be continuous until the cigar or cigarette has completely burned away, thereby eliminating the possibility of fire. Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character wherein the lid or cover is so constructed that it is possible to. extinguish the lighted end of the cigar or cigarette by rubbing such end at certain portions of said lid or cover and the burning particles of tobacco and ashes will be positively trapped within the device and thus the liability of fire is reduced to a minimum and at the same time avoids the scattering of ashes or tobacco particles outside of the device with resultant complete "trapping 1 thereof.
A further object of the invention is the provi- 26 sion of a device of this character, wherein the lid or cover thereof is of novel form and will assure the proper holding of a cigar or cigarette when not being smoked without liability of such cigar or cigarette falling outside of the device.
30 A still further object of the-invention is the .provision of a device of this character which is extremelysimple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in itspurposes, neat and attractive in appearance, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described in detail, illus- 40 trated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:-- Figure l is a top plan view of a device con- .structed in accordance with the invention. Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof. Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 4 is a sectional ,view on the line 4-4 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail A designates generally a bowl or receptacle preferably of cylindrical form although it may be otherwise shaped and also preferably made from vitrified materials, such as glass and china, bakelite and other suitable materials or metals and formed at its closed bottom 5 marginally thereof are feet 6 to elevate the bowl or receptacle when upon a table or other support, the upper or top of the bowl or receptacle being open and has removably fitted thereon a lid or cover B hereinafter fully described.
The lid or cover B comprises an annular rim '7 with a downturned flange 8, the latter embracing the bowl or receptacle A as the said lid or cover B is telescopically fitted onto the upper open end or the top of said bowl or receptacle. The lid or cover B may be so constructed that its annular rim 7 can fit inside of the open end or top of the bowl or receptacle.
The rim 7 has joined therewith an inverted conical-shaped fret-like center grating 9 formed with opposed inwardly inclined cigar or cigarette rests in the form of channeled chutes or troughs 10, these at their outer ends being extended beyond the lid or cover B and the inner ends 11 terminating at a center opening 12 formed in the grating 9. Each chute or trough 10 is transversely corrugated to provide outwardly struck spaced ribs 13, these being confined to the iimer end portion thereof.
Located centrally of the grating 9 is a vertically disposed post 14 preferably of squared formation in cross section with a pointed upper end 15, the post being supported vertically from a U-shaped bail 16 depending from and integral I with the lid or cover B in confronting relation to the open center 12 of said grating 9 and this a bail in its position projects the post 14 a distance upwardly within the grating 9 through the center 12 so that when a cigar or cigarette is placed within the chute or trough 10 the lighted end thereof will contact with the post 14 and as the said cigar or cigarette burns away the unburned portion will gravitate due to the inclination of the chute or trough 10 in the direction of and against the post 14, whereby the burnt particles or ashes will constantly fall through the open center 12 into the bowl or receptacle A and thus be held therein. The post 14 can either'be made a part of the lid or cover B or anchored to its top, sides or bottom or such post may be independent thereof and set loosely on the bottom of the bowl.
The lid or cover B at opposite points thereof has formed therein reticulated or open mesh sections 1'7 forming snuffer areas to constitute extinguishing beds so that the lighted end of a cigar or or chutes prevent the sticking of the cigar or cigarette therein when the same is resting within the chute or trough and burning and also by reason 01' said ribs a cigar or cigarette will have a freer tendency to gravitate or work inwardly against the post 14 when said cigar or cigarette is placed within the chute or trough and thus there is no liability of the cigar or cigarette falling from the lid or cover to drop therefrom onto a table or support upon which the bowl or receptacle is placed and in this manner eliminating the possibility of fire.
What is claimed is:-
1. A device of the kind described comprising a bowl open at its top, a lid or cover removably fitted thereon and having a fretted center grating provided with open mesh portions forming snuffer areas, inwardly inclined troughs formed in the lid or cover and having their innermost ends terminating spaced from each other, and a. center post carried by the lid or cover between the troughs.
2. A device of the kind described comprising a bowl open at its top, a lid or cover removably fitted thereon and having a fretted center grating provided with open mesh portions forming snufier areas, inwardly inclined troughs formed in the lid or cover and having their innermost ends terminating, spaced from each other, and a center post carriedv by the lid or cover between the troughs, said grating having a center opening about the post.
