Description
J. D.WILKINSON MEASURING DEVICES FOR FILLING CARTRIDGES. No. 193,434. Patented J'uly 2%,1877.
N.PETERS, PHOTO-LITNOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON, D O.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN -D. WILKINSON, OF PLATTSBURG, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN MEASURING DEVICES FOR FILLING CARTRIDGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 193,434, dated July 24, 1877 3 application filed May 5, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN D. WILKIN- SON, of Plattsburg, county of Clinton, and
. State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Cartridge-Loader, of which the following is a specification In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a vertical central section of my improved cartridge-loader; and Fig. 2 a horizontal section of the same on line 00 :10, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to furnish to sportmens and others an improved cartridge loading implement, by which the charges of powder of the required size are obtained in quick and accurate manner, and the loader consists of two cylinders, one sliding within the other and turning between top and bottom plates, to which they are pivoted. The top cylinder has an opening and changing tube, registering with an opening of top plate and funnel, and the lower cylinder a connecting-tube and opening registering with exitopening and spout of bottom plate.
In the drawing, A represents the lower and A the upper cylinder, which slide one within the other, and which are centrally pivoted to bottom and top plates B B. The bottom plate B is firmly attached to a clamp, O, by which it may be screwed to a table or other support. The clamp O is provided with an upright post or standard, 0, to which the top plate B is attached by means of a collar and set-screw, a, so as to admit the sliding up and down of the top plate and thereby of the top cylinder, pivotedand guided thereon. Both cylinders, A and A, are provided with charging-tubes D D at equal distance from the center-pivots, which tubes slide or telescope in the same manner as the cylinders, so as to increase or decrease, by the raising or lowering of the top cylinder, the quantity of powder in the charging-tubes, and adjust the charge to the size required. The tube D of the top cylinder registers with an opening of the top plate B, having a funnel, E, and the tube D of the lower cylinder with an opening and discharge spout, E, of the bottom plate B, the openings of the top and bottom plates being at such relative positions to each other that the charging-tubes are completely shut off from one before they connect with the other. The turning of the cylinders is accomplished by a thumb-piece, b, and the extent of axial motion of the cylinders regulated by the stops d, which form contact with post 0, and are arranged in such manner that the chargingtubes communicate with the funnel when turned in one direction, and with the discharge spout when turned in the opposite direction.
When the loader is clamped to the table, adjusted to the charge desired, and the powder placed in the funnel, the drums or cylinders require only to be turned from the supply-hole to the discharge-hole and back, and a charge is furnished with each forward turning of the drum, so as to produce the rapid and accurate charging of the shells in uniform manner.
Having thus fully described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of the telescoping-cylinders, pivoted to guide-plates, and having charging-tubes, with bottom and top plates, having respectively a standard and sliding collar and clamp-screw to adjust chargingtubes to the required size of charge, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the charging-tubes and axially-turning cylinders, having stops (1,
with the top and bottom guide-plates and fixed standard to produce registering of charging-tubes with supply and discharge openings,
substantially as specified.
JOHN D. WILKINSON.
Witnesses: H. F. FAIRBANKS, J. B. HAG-EBTY.
