Description

.E. J. WRIGHT.
PAPER-CLIPS.
N. PETERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPMER UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
ERLMAN J. WRIGHT, OF WALTHAM, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER-CLIPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 193,389, dated July 24, 1877 application filed November 11, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EBLMAN J. WRIGHT, of Waltham, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paper-Files, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view, showing my invention as applied. Fig. 2 is a plan, and Fig. 3 is a side view of the same.
The object of my invention is to produce a device for fastening together loose leaves of papers, documents, periodicals, newspapers, &c., which is not only effective and inexpensive, but does also away with all sewing of said papers together, or to fasten them by pointed bent-over paper-fasteners or eyelets and my invention consists in apiece of wire or flat metallic strip, bent in such a manner as to firmly hold the flying leaves together, and be still. easily attached or detached.
Referring to the drawing, Fig. 2 represents the paper-file, consistingin bending a piece of wire so as to present three distinct lines, commencing with the line a by extending it downward, then bending it semicircular, and running the line b upward, and, when opposite the beginning of line a, bend it downward again into a third line, 0, in such a manner that the latter passes between the lines a b, and, by extending it still farther downward, terminates in a slight bend, curving from a b. The loop d, formed by the parts a b, is bent slightly'outward to allow the line 0 to lie flush at that portion of the file with the lines a b, thereby causing the clamping action of the paper-file.
In attaching the file to the leaves of paper, slide the papers upward between the line 0 and the loop 01 until they are stopped by the upper bend or loop formed by the lines b 0. Thus it will be seen that the slight curvature at the lower extremity of c prevents the tearing of the paper by having the sharp and. ragged end turned away from the same. The
portion between the extremity and the lower loop at tends to give stiffness to the papers,
the loop cl and line 0 effect the binding, while the upper loop prevents the slipping off of the paper.
Thus a means is provided by which flying leaves are speedily, effectively, and easily joined, Without any injury to them, and without requiring any preceding preparation of sewing, punching, or piercing, as done with eyelets and common paper-fasteners.
I do not confine myself to the application of my invention for holding flying leaves, manuscripts, &;c.; but it may be profitably used for holding garments, or for book and stop marks.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A paper-file consisting of one piece of wire bent to form the stifl'ener c, the clamp formed by stifl'ener c and loop d, and the upper stoploop formed by the lines b c, constructed and arranged in the manner and for the purpose substantially as herein set forth.
