7 www, am/W Patented Nov. 7, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CONTROLLING APPARATUS FOR HIGHWAY CROSSING SIGNALS Application June 20, 1928, Serial No. 286,925 Renewed November 5, 1931 42 Claims. (Cl. 246-130) My invention relates to controlling apparatus for highway crossing signals, that is, to means for the control of signals which are placed at intersections of railways and highways for the purpose of warning users of the highway when a train is approaching.
One feature of my invention is the provision of means for starting the operation of the signal at one point or another depending on the speed of a train approaching the signal.
I will describe one form of apparatus embodying my invention, and will then point out the novel features thereof in claims.
The accompanying drawing is a diagrammatic view illustrating one form of apparatus embodying my invention as applied to a crossing bell.
Referring to the drawing, the reference characters 1 and 1 designate the track rails of a stretch of railway track along which traffic normally moves in the direction indicated by the arrow. This track is intersected by a highway H. Insulated joints 2 divide the track rails l and 1 into three insulated track sections AB, BC, and CD, the end D of section CD being located at or near the highway crossing H. A signal S, of the crossing bell type, is placed adjacent to the highway.
Current is supplied to the entrance end of each of the track sections A-B, BC, and CD, by transformers T T and T respectively, through the usual impedance device 3. The primary windings of transformers T T and T are supplied with alternating current over line wires 12 and 13 from a generator G. Relays R R and R respectively, are connected across the rails at the exit ends of sections AB, BC, and CD.
The supply of current to the primary winding of transformer T is so controlled by track relay R. and an auxiliary slow pick-up stick relay P as to be interrupted when a train moving faster than a given speed passes point B, or to continue uninterrupted until a train moving at a lower speed passes point C. Relay P is provided with a pick-up circuit which is from generator G, over line wire 12, contact 4, wire 14, contact '7-6 of relay R wire 15, winding of relay P, and wires 17, 18, and 13 to generator G. A stick circuit for relay P is from generator G over line wire 12, through wire 20, contact 9 of relay P, wire 16, back contact 8--6 of relay R wire 15, winding of relay P and wires 1'7, 18, and 13 to generator G. A control circuit for transformer T is from generator G, over line wire 12, wire 20, contact 10 of relay P, wires 22 and 23, primary winding of transformer T and wires 19, 18, and 13 to generator G. The portion of this circuit through contact 10 and wire 22 is in multiple with a path through wire 21 and contact 5 of relay R As shown in the drawing, all of the parts of the apparatus occupy the positions correspond- 0 ing to the normal or unoccupied condition of the sections A-B, BC, and CD.
In describing the operation of the apparatus I will first assume that a train moving from right to left, enters the stretch of track shown 5 in the drawing. When the train enters section AB, relay R becomes de-energized, thereupon closing its contact 4 and completing the pick-up circuit for relay P. I will further assume that the train moves so rapidly through section A--B 7 that relay P, because of its slow pick-up characteristic, does not have time to close its front contacts before the train enters section BC and that relay P hence remains de-energized as the train moves through section BC. Therefore, the branch path of the primary circuit of transformer T continues open at contact 10 of relay P and the main path is opened at contact 5 of relay B when the train de-energizes relay R thus causing the primary winding of transformer T to become de-energized. In turn, relay R becomes de-energized because the primary circuit of transformer T is de-energized. The back contact of relay R then closes the operating circuit of bell S from generator G, over line wire 12, wire 25, contact 11 of relay R wire 26, bell S, and wires 24 and 13 to generator G, causing the bell to ring while the train is moving through sections BC and C-D.
As the train moves out of section BC, relay R by its contact 5, closes the primary, circuit of transformer T which again energizes relay R when the train leaves section CD. Relay R upon opening its back contact 11, breaks the operating circuit of bell S which then stops ringing.
I will now assume that a train moves so slowly through section A-B that relay P closes its front contacts before the train de-energizes relay R so that relay P then continues energized 1 by current flowing in its stick circuit as the train moves through section BC. While relay P is energized, the primary circuit of transformer T is completed through contact 10 of relay P, and relay R continues energized and the bell S will not ring until the train enters section CD and de-energizes relay R Bell S will then continue to ring until the train leaves section CD.
From the foregoing description it is clear that if a t ain moves faster than a certain rate of speed through sectlon A -B. bell S will ring from the time the train enters section B-C. until it leaves section C-D. It is also clear that if a train moves at lower speeds through section AB, bell S will ring only from the time the train enters section C-D, until it leaves section C-D.
Although I have herein shown and described only one form of signaling apparatus embodying my invention, it is understood that various changes and modifications may be made therein within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
