3 Claims.

The main object of this invention is the provision of a novel type of pencil sharpener contained within a pencil holder adapted to be car-A ried in the pocket by means of a clip or clasp.

Another object -of the invention is the provision of such a pencil sharpener with a reversible, arched bladev having two cutting edges, the blade being reversed after one of said edges has become dulled through use, to present the fresh edge to the sharpening recess.

Referring briefly to the drawing, Figure 1 is a side view of the assembled device, showing the exterior.

Referring in detail to the drawing, the nu-l meral 10 represents the body of the holder, which is conical in form on the outside and has a cylindrical channel 11, of varying diameter, extending entirely therethrough. At the narrower end of the body l0, the channel is of smallest diameter, as indicated at the section 12. The adjacent section 13 is of greater diameter than the section 12 and is provided with screw threads 15. The next adjacent channel section 14 is of greater diameter than the section 13, and the end of the section 14 is provided with screw threads 16.

A solid screw plug 17, having an extension 21 of reduced diameter, threadably engages the threads 16 of the channel section 14, and is provided with a knurled rim 18. The adjacent rim of the body 1G is also knurled. An eraser 19 of the usual pencil type is imbedded in the knurled cap 18 of the plug 17. A comrnon type of pocket clip 20 is provided on the body of the pencil.

A conical recess 22 is eccentrically cut out of the plug 2l insuch manner that-the generating line of the cone in one position is parallel to 1 the generating line of the cylindrical surface of the plug where the latter is nearest to the cone. 55 A slot 23 in the plug 21 extends the length of (Cl. 1Z0-87) and into, the conical cut out 22. At a peripheral distance from the slot 23 and parallel with the latter, a rounded groove 24 is provided in thesurface of the plug 21. 1t is to be noted that the slot 23 is also provided with rounded 60 sides. The rslot 23 and groove 24 define the rounded sides of a ridge 3l whose peripheral surface therebetween is cylindrical. The blade 25 is of such conformation that it fits snugly over the ridge 31, its central portion 32 being 65 cylindrical in curvature and its opposite sides 26 and 27 being rounded to conform to the rounded adjacent sides of the slot 23 and groove 24. The edges of the sides 26 and 27 are sharpened to provide cutting edges. A hole 28 is provided 70 centrally of the blade 25, through which a screw 29 passes to secure the blade in the plug 21.

In the channel section 13, an externally threaded nut 35 having a similarly-threaded sleeve extension 33, threadably engages the threaded wall 15 of the sleeve section 13. A small hole 36 extends centrally through the nut 35, and the wall of the compartment 34 enclosed by the sleeve 33 is hexagonal. In one of these hexagonal walls a resilient friction strip 40 is im- 80 bedded and is secured therein by a screw 37 passing through the sleeve 33, the outer surface of the sleeve being countersunk at 38 to accommodate the head of the screw. A common type of wood pencil 39, having hexagonal sides, is adapted for use in combination with this device.

Normally, the'entire device is carried in the pocket and the relative parts are in the position shown in Figure 1, with the pencil ready for use. v When the length of the pencil has been too far reduced, or when for any reason it is desired to increase the length of pencil extending outward from the channel section 12, the pencil 39 is rotated to cause rotation and advance of the nut 35. If it is simply desired to carry the pencil with the point protected, the pencil is then reversed and reinserted into the nut 35, the point of the pencil entering into the hole 36. In case the pencil should be provided with a metal band surmounted by an eraser, it may be necessary to so reverse the pencil in order to rotate the nut 35. The friction strip 40 retains the pencil securely in the sleeve 33, yet it yields to a slight pulling force on the pencil so that the latter may be readily extracted.

In using the Sharpener, the plug 17 is unscrewed from the body 1i), the pencil is inserted into the conical recess 22 and held tightly in one hand while the plug is rotated with the other, or vice versa. When one cutting edge of the blade has become dulled, the blade is unscrewed and reversed so that the fresh edge enters the slot 23.

Obviously modications in form and structure may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.

I claim:

l. A device of the class described comprising a hollow body having a cylindrical threaded channel passing therethrough, a cap threadably engaging one end of said channel, said cap having a cylindrical extension provided with a conical recess, the axis of said conical recess being inclined with respect to the axis of said extension, said extension having a longitudinal slot in the surface thereof communicating with said recess and a groove therein parallel with said recess, and an arched blade secured to said extension and having a pair of parallel side edges, one edge thereof projecting through said slot into said recess, and the other registering in said groove.

A device of the class described comprising a hollow body having a cylindrical threaded channel passing therethrough, a cap threadably engaging said channel and having a cylindrical extension, said extension having a conical recess therein having its axis inclined with respect to the axis of said extension, said extension having a longitudinal slot in the surface thereof communicating with said recess and having a groove therein parallel with said slot, and an arched blade secured to said extension having a pair of sharpened side edges, one of said edges registering in said slot and the other in said groove.

A device of the class described comprising a hollow body having a cylindrical threaded channel passing therethrough, a cap threadably engaging said channel and having a cylindrical extension, said extension having a conical recess therein having its axis inclined with respect to ythe axis of said extension, said extension having a longitudinal slot in the surface thereof communicating with said recess and having a groove therein parallel with said slot, and an arched blade secured to said extension having a pair of sharpened side edges, one of said edges being adapted to register in said slot and the other in said groove and means for releasably locking said blade on said extension.
