This invention has for 4its principal object to 5 provide a novel means or'joiningY and securing together the meeting ends oi discontinuous lens encircling and holding'rims of eye-glasses, while at the same time interlocking, in supported relation to such rims, the nose-guard or pads usually 1o forming parts o eye-glass frames. With this general object in View, the present invention seeks to provide a novel rim joint structure arranged to receive an anchor tonguev of a'lnoseguard or pad in such manner as to interlock the joint elements together, whereby the operation of setting the fastening screw to secure the-parts in operative assembled relation is greately facilitated, while at the same time suchv fastening screw, when set, is held against accidental loosening, so that a rm and rigidassembly is attained capable of easily withstanding the stresses and strains consequent upon the use of eyeglasses by the` wearer.
This invention has for a further object to provide a combined interlocking rim joint and nose'- guard assembly which is of very compact form, of very neat and pleasing appearance, and which is especially adapted for use in connection with lfolding eye-glass frames of the Oxford, lorgnette and similar types, as well as with ordinarypincenez and spectacle types of eye-glass frames.
Other objects of this invention, not at thistime more particularly enumerated, willbecome apparent in the following detailed description-of the same.

Fig. 1 is an outer face View of an eye-glass frame of the folding Oxiord type, khaving the novel combined interlocking rim joint and noseguard assembly according to this invention; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary top plan viewV of the rim joint and nose-guard assembly, drawn on an enlargedscale; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the same, taken on line 3 3 in Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is atransverse vertical section, taken on line 4%-4 in Fig. 3; andFig. 5 is a horizontal section, taken on line 5 5 in Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary side elevation, and Fig. 7 a top plan view of a somewhat modied form oiv the novel combined interlocking rim joint and. nose-guard assembly, which still embodies, however, the principles of this invention.
Similar characters of reference are employed in the hereinabove described Views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawing, the reference character 10 indicates the lens `rims of an eye-glass frame, which for purposes of illustration, is 6o shown in the form commonly known the Oxford type, in which said rims are spaced apart and connected together by a springbridge 11. Said rims 10 are discontinuous, i. e. the same are provided with separable meeting ends, provided with joint means for securing said ends together when the rim has been assembled around and in hoiding relation to the periphery of a iens l2; Fixedly connected with and projecting radially outward from the perimeter of the rim at one end thereof, with its bottom surface in the plane of said end, is ahollow box open at its outer end, the same'comprising a top wall 13, a bottom wail 14 and side walls 1.5, whereby is formed an interior chamber 16 open at the outerv extremity 75 of the box thus formed. The top wall 13 is prou vided with an opening 17 sized to receive the head 18 of vafastening screw 19, andsaid bottom wall'is VprC/ided Awith anV aligned opening 2l), adapted to pass the shank of said screw 19. Fix- 8g edly connected with and projecting radially outu ward from the perimeter of the rim at the other end thereof, with its upper surface in the plane of such end, is a strap 21. This strap 21 is pron vided at its outer extremity with lan angular interl'ock flange 22, extending upwardly at a right angle thereto so las to abut the outer open extremity of said-box. Said yinterlock flange 22 isprovided with an opening or slot 23 correspending to and adapted to register with the open 9@ end of the chamber 16 of said box, when the ends of therim v10 are brought together in meeting relation, so as to close the rim around and in embracing and holding relation to the periphery of a lens 12. Saidstrap 21 is provided with an in- 95 ternally threaded opening 24, adapted to align with the opening 20 of the box so as tovreceive fand operatively engage the threaded shank of Aafastening screw 19.
The referencecharacter 25 indicates the base 100 plate ofanose-guard element, to which are suitably Vconnected the facing pads 26. The form of said base plate and the pads mounted thereon, is subject to lmore orless wide variation as to shapek and makeup, but, whatever the form 105 thereof, in eachv case the base plate 25 is essentially provided with an angular anchor tongue 27 `of conformation suiciently corresponding to the interior of the box chamber- 16 asl yto be insertable therein; Said anchor tongue 27 is pro- 110 vided with an opening 28 adapted to align with the screw receiving openings of the box and strap when said anchor tongue is assembled therewith.
When manipulating the rim 10 to assemble a lens 12 therewith, and thereupon secure the joint of the rim and at the same time anchor the nose-guard element thereto, the following operations take place:
With the rim 10 open, the lens 12 is inserted therein and the ends of the rim closed together to engage the same in embracing and holding relation around the lens periphery. When the ends of the rim are closed together, the strap 21 is brought into meeting relation with the under-v side of the box, whereupon the interlock flange 22 is registered against the outer end of said box, with the opening or slot 23 thereof aligned with the open end of said box so as to communicate with the interior 16 of the latter. When these parts are thus disposed, the nose-guard element is applied by inserting the anchor tongue 27 thereof through the slot or opening 23 of the interlock flange 22 and thence into the interior 16 of the box. When the anchor tongue 2'7 is thus assembled with the rim joint box and strap, the same serves as a key to interlock the joint box and strap against separation, pending the setting of the` fastening screw 19. This of itself, offers a great convenience to the operator, since it aifords a very efficient temporary holding of the'parts against displacement from desired assembled relations while the operator applies and screws home the fastening screw to iinally secure the assembly. In applying the screw 19, the shank is inserted through the opening 17 in the top wall 13 of the box so as to pass through the opening 28 of the nose-guard anchor tongue 27, and thence through theA opening 20 in the lower wall 14 of the box, to thence screw into the threaded opening 24 of the strap 21, in final tightened position. Preferably, the head I18 of the screw 19 countersinks in the opening 17 of the upper wall 13 of the box, although, of course, this is not absolutely essential.
From the above description, it will be obvious that a very strong, and yet compact and neat, interlocking arrangement of rim joint andl noseguard is provided by this invention, wherein but a single fastening screw is required to both Ysecure the joint in closedcondition and the noseguard element in operative assembled relation to the rim. Furthermore, the arrangement is such that, the interlock flange of the strap,l when keyed to the box by the insertion of the nose-guard 1 anchor tongue, prevents any separating movement or vibration between the box and strap which might tend to loosen the fastening screw, and the fastening screw is further secured against loosening by the engagement of the anchor tongue 27 therewith.
Referring to Figs. 6 and 7, there isshown therein a modified arrangement which is essentially the same as that above described, and as illustrated in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, but which 1 differs therefrom in the provision of side flanges 21' in connection with the strap 21, adapted to embrace the sides of the box. l
While we have described and shown the joint in a form wherein the hollow box of one end of the rim cverlies the strap of the other end thereof, it will be obvious thatl these parts may be reversed in position, should it be desired so todo.
It will also be understood that the invention, in its broadest aspect, comprehends a joint of the character described for discontinuous lens rims of eye-glass frames, regardless of whether the inserted tongue is a part of the nose-guard or any other element to be included in the makeup of the frame, or is an independent element without other function than that of its interlocking engagement with and between the box and strap of the joint.
We are aware that many changes could be made in the above constructions, and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof. It is therefore intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
We claim:-
1. A joint for discontinuous lens rims of eyeglass frames, comprising a hollow open ended box connected with one end of the rim, a strap connected with the other end of the rim, said strap having a perforate portion aligned with the open end of said box, an interlocking tongue inserted through said perforate portion of the strap and into the box to initially hold these parts in rim joint closing position, and a fastening screw engaged through said box, tongue and strap to iinally secure said parts against displacement from operative assembled relation.
2. A combined rim joint and nose-guard anl chorage for eye-glass frames, comprising a hollow open ended box connected with one end of the rim, a strap connected with the other end of the rim, saidV strap having a slotted interlock flange at its free end to register with the open end of said box when the rim ends are abutted together, a nose-guard having an angularly extending anchor tongue inserted through said slotted interlock flange and into said box to initially hold the rim joint closed, and fastening means extending through said assembled box, Strap and anchor tongue to finally secure the same in such assembled relation.
3. A combined rimV joint and nose-guard anchorage for eye-glass frames, comprising a hollow open endedbox connected with one end of the rim, a strap connected with the other end of the rim, said strap having a slotted interlock flange at its free end to register with the open end of said box when the rim ends are abutted together, a nose-guard having an anchor'tongue tial periphery thereof, a strap connected with the surfaces of said box and strap being adapted to meet in abutting relation when said rim ends are closed together, said strap having an angular slotted interlock iiange at its free end to engage over and register with the open end of said box, an interlocking tongue inserted through said slotted interlock flange and into said box, and top and bottom walls of said box, said anchor tongue and said strap having aligned openings therethrough, and a fastening screw engaged through said openings whereby saidparts are secured in assembled relation.
5. A combined rim joint and nose-guard assembly for eye-glass frames, comprising a hollow open ended box connected with one end of the rim to project outwardly from the circumferential periphery thereof, a strap connected with the other end 0I said rim to project outwardly from the circumferential periphery thereof, opposed surfaces of said box and strap being adapted t0 meet in abutting relation when said rim ends are closed together, said strap having `an
