Application June 22, 1931. Serial No. '1545,982 1 2 Claims. (01. 292-113) The main object of our invention is to provide an eflicient and. reliable inside hood catch for securing the hoods of motor vehicles and the like.
Objects pertaining to details and economies of construction and operation will appear from the description to follow. A preferred embodiment of our invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary elevation of a preferred embodiment of our invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary section on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
The numeral 1 represents the swinging closure member of a motor vehicle partly broken away and showing only that portion of the closure member to which the hood catch is attached. Mounted on the inside of the member 1 is an elongated latch plate 2 having a bolt supporting lug 3 at its lower end and a pair of spaced, substantially vertical pivot ears 4 at its upper end.
The latch plate 2 may be secured to the closure member 1 in any suitable manner, as for example by means of rivets 5.
The ears 4 are provided with horizontally aligned openings 6. in which is mounted a pivot '7 which carries a latch lever 8 that extends upwardly from the pivot 7 and through an opening 9 provided in the wall of the closure member 1.
The latch lever 8, after passing through the hole 9, is bent outwardly'and downwardly through a relatively large are extending toward the closure member 1 and. then at its lower end through a relatively smaller are away from the closure member, thereby providing a handle at its lower end for manual manipulation. The curved segment of the latch lever is swingable in the closure mem her opening. V
The shape of the latch lever 8 is best illustrated by Fig. 2. .Pivotally mounted in the latch lever 8 above the pivot '7 is a yoke-like link 10of substantially inverted U-shape. A centering sleeve 11 is mounted between the member 8 and the horizontal portion of the link 10 for keeping the link centered with respect to the lever 8.
A cross piece 12 is secured to the lower ends of the vertical portions of the link 10. This cross piece 12 is provided with a central opening for 50 the slidable passage of the bolt 13. The bolt 13 passes through the central'opening in the cross piece 12 and has secured to its upper end a cross piece 14 having openings provided in its outer ends for the slidable passage of the vertical por} tions of the link 10.
V A compression spring 15 surrounds the bolt ;13 between the upper-and lower cross pieces for .urg ing them apart. I A stop member 16 ismounted on the bolt 13 below the lower cross piece 12 for limiting the relative movement-between the up- 6 per and lower cross pieces. The stop 16 also insures that when the latch is released the bolt is moved downwardly to disengage the keeper. The
lower end of the bolt 16 is disposed in an open-, ing provided in the bolt supporting lug 3 of the latch plate 2 which guides the bolt 16.
The extreme lower end of the bolt 16 is provided with an upwardlyinclinedkeeper engaging portion 17 that is adapted to engage the keeper 18 which is secured to the stationary supporting 0 surface 19 in any suitable manner, as for example by means of screws .20. The keeper is disposed on the inner side of the closure member abutment 21.
The drawing illustrates the hood catch in its closed position. In this position the spring 15, urges the bolt upwardly and the link downward ly. When the pivot, connection for the link tothe lever passes the vertical plane of the pivot 7, the spring acts tocontinue the opening movemerit. The spring is designed so. that thisj force is suflicient to obviate rattles between the parts.

The pivot for the link is so positioned on said lever that the parts coact to provide a locking toggle when adjusted to locking position, which V prevents them from rattling.
While-we prefer to use a single sheet metal member attached to the hood member for the latch plate, it will be understood that two separate pieces each secured to the closure'member 6 may be used instead of this single member. Furthermore, while we prefer to use the resilient connection illustrated and described for connecting, the link 10 and the bolt 16, nevertheless this connection may be modified without departing. 1100. 7

Having thus described our'invention, what we claim as-new and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is: r
1. In a hood catch, the combination-of a swinging closure member having an opening therein, 11m
lug at its lower end, a bolt having an upwardly inclined keeper engaging portion at its lower end slidable in said lug, a latch lever pivotally mounted at its inner'end between said ears and disposed through said opening in said closure member and having a curved segment swingable in said opening, a yoke-like link pivotally mounted on said lever and having a cross piece at lower end slidable on said bolt, said bolt having a cross piece at its' upper end through which the arms of the yoke are slidably disposed, and a compression spring arranged on said :bolt-between said cross pieces, said bolt being provided.
