The invention is an improvement upon the printing machine illustrated in the patent to Albert H. Ray No. 1,318,108 granted October 7,
1919, and the objectof the invention is to provide for the web or strip aguideof novel construction, positive and efiicient in action, inexpensive and not liable to be rendered inoperative in transit or in the placewhere the machine is used,
as will be described.
The particular features of the invention will be pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.
In the drawings illustrating the preferred em-- bodiment of the invention, Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view through the improvedfmachine; Fig. 2 is an end elevation viewed from the righthand side of the machine shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective of the new string 5 guiding mechanism; and Fig. 4 is asectional plan of a portion of the machine illustrating the same.
, In general, the present invention contemplates a machine of the type illustrated in the Ray Patent No. 1,318,108 above referred to, which is designed to print a continuous strip or web of pa- 1 per or other material havingstrings attached to sections thereof, so that when the sections are severed from the strip, printed tags are produced having a string attached to each tag.
As illustrated in the drawings, and as shown a in said Ray patent, the machine comprises essentially a stationary platen a and a reciprocatory printing member b cooperating therewith.
The reciprocatory printing'member b comprises 40 a chase 15 containing type 16, and provision is made for reciprocating the printing member b at timed intervals in the operation of the machine from a cam 26 havinga cam path 25 through suitable connections, as shown in the above mentioned Ray patent including a plunger 1'7 arranged to slide in a suitable guide 18. Provision is also made for supplying ink to the to be supplied with ink from an inking disk 40 over which the rollers pass'during the traverse of the chain around its supporting sprockets.

The pins 91 project upwardly from aplate 190 forming a part of a carriage 92 and are preferably arranged in rows near the opposite sidesof the carriage and spaced apart a distance substantially equal tothe width of a section of the web to be printed upon, and as shown in the above-mentionedRay patent theieed'pins 91 are designed to engage the strip or web between adjacent sections. Pro vision is made for elevating the pin plate 190 to render the pins operative to'advance the web, and this mechanism may comprise that shown in the aboveementionedRay patent includinga cam 93 cooperatingwith a bar 95 connected through posts 96 to the pin plate 190, as shown in Fig. 76 1. Near the end of the forward movement of the carriage 92 the cam 93 permits theplate, 190 to drop by gravity assisted by' the spring 104 to withdraw the feed pins from the notches, in the edge of the stripto be printed upon. The carriage '92 may and preferably will be reciprocated from a crank 87 and connecting rod'86, as shown; Provision is also'preferably made forsevering theindividual printed sections of the webby a f cutting mechanism which may comprise a m'ov able cutter or 'knife 63" cooperatin With the stationary cutter 11D, and the movable cutter 63 may be operated from the cam 25 through suitable Fig. 1, and a cover plate 152 mounted upon and supported by an arm 153 pivoted at 154 upon the frame of the machine. The cover plate 152 is maintained in operative position spaced slightly above the bed plate 90 and has a portion thereof Q extended beyond the bed plate to cooperate with the guide member 155 and form a guideway for the web or strip of tags. A stop 156 as illustrated in Fig. 2 positions the arm 153 and cover plate 152 1 with relation tothe bed plate 90 and'the guide member 155. The parts are arranged so that suflicient space is left between the cover plate and the upper surface of the bed plate'to permit the web to freely pass therebetween and to be drawn forwardly in the mannerv above described by the pins 91 forming a part of the carriage at each forward advance of the carriage. The bed 7 plate 90 of the machine is provided with the usual slots, as above described, through which the pins may project into the web engaging position, and
is further provided with a channel as described in the .cover plate ,152 and the underlying guide member lwith an inclined or angularly disposededge 160, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, arranged in such position as to engage the strings and guide them into the channel 151. The hinged cover plate 152 enables convenient access to be had to the underlying web, so that in the event that any of the-stringsdo not pass into the channel, the fault may be easily corrected by swinging back the cover plate and exposing the channel in the bed plate and also the guideway beyond the end operated with minimum delay.- l T e Pre ent me es of trin guiding mechanism, including the guide member 155 and of the bed plate, thus enabling the machine to be the cover plate 152, enables a superior control to be had of the web during the period in its travel into th'e machine when "the strings are being guided into the channel} The .web is caused to travel infa"horizontalfplahe while the inclined v edge portion 160 of the plates 152, 155 are operatihgtoguide the strings down ihto a position 7 where theyfwilllhang over the edge of the web Qrstrip and pass through the channel 151 in the manner above describedpth'us insuring a most ambient operation of the guiding mechanism.
The construction Tofstri'ng guiding mechanism is simple and may be economically manufactured.
It will be observed that the cover plate 152 projects beyond the bed plate a substantial distance, and that this projecting portion is integral with the cover plate and forms a rigid and sub stantial upper guide member having an inclined front endwhichforms a strong and rigid memher for deflecting the strings toward the channels in" the bed plate and cover plate.
The lower guidememb'er 155 is also of rigid construction and this rigid construction of the ul'oper and lowerguide and deflecting members by avoiding loss of time in the use of the machine and expense in placing the guide members in operative condition.

will be understood that the invention may be embodied in other forms within the scope of the following claims. I. i
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is: I y
1. In a printing machine of the character described, in combination, a bed plate over which a strip orweb strung withstrings is fed, a cover plate for said bed plate having an end portion projecting beyond the end of said bed plate and provided with an angular forward edge for guiding strings during the passage of the Web thereunder and toward said bed plate.
In a printing machine of the character de scribed, in combination, a bed plate over which a strip or web strung with strings is fed, a cover plate for said had plate having a rigid end portion projecting beyond said bed plate and provided with an inclined front edge, and a rigid guiding membe'rbelow the projecting end of said cover plate and provided with an inclined front 15 edge registering with the inclined front edge of the cover plate.
