Description
A. ALEXANDER, J'r.
BUTTER-MOLD- Patented July '17.,1877. 7
MPETERS, PHOTO-UTHDGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. 0
UNITED STATES PATENT O EIcE ALVA ALEXANDER, JR, OF SOUTH WINDSOR, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTER-MOLDS.
. Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 193,103, dated July 17, 1877; application filed February 19, 1877.
' fication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, where- Figure 1 is a top view of the mold closed, Fig. 2 is a front view of the same. Fig. 3 is at top view of the mold opened. Fig. 4 shows the tamper.
In or on the bottom board a is an appropriate ornamental figure, sunken or raised. The device, when closed, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, forms a box, into which the butter is put and properly tamped and compacted either by the operators hand or by the tamper b; or a block may be used having an appropriate figure in or on it to ornament the pat of but ter on the upper side. This tamping down of the butter impresses the ornamental figure which is upon the bottom board a upon the corresponding face of the pat of butter.
Now, to take the butter from the mold, the front flap c, hinged to the bottom board a, is pierced by mortises a, through which project tenons d from the end flaps d, having notches 11 into which take the pawls pivoted on the front of flap 0, thus holding the device locked into box form. These pawls are turned up so as to unlock from notches d, and the v front flapc can then beturned down, as shown in Fig. 3. The end flaps d are hinged to the rear flap e and now swing back freely. The rear flap e is hinged to the bottom board a and readily turns down, as shown in Fig. 3,
bearing the end flaps, which are hinged to it, with it. This leaves the pat of butter free on all sides, so that it can be readily removed.
The ornamental figure can be varied at pleasure. So far as the device for locking the flaps into the box form is concerned, it is obvious that a great many different catches might be used, and for fear of misconstruction on this point I have to state that I claim equivalents I for the catch shown;
It is not my intention to claim as myinvention all manner of butter-molds with folding sides, for I have been made aware since I made the present invention of a prior butter-mold having two folding sidesjoined into one piece, with which it is necessary to use a thin cloth placed in the mold and against its bottom and all its sides, whereby to preserve the butter intact when the mold is opened. The object of my invention is to produce a mold in which all the sides shall open directly away from the ALVA ALEXANDER, JR.
Witnesses:
