This invention relates to straining devices and pertains particularly to a strainer of the character used in association with internal combustion eneach of these end plates is xed a bushing which is employed for maintaining the straining bagl or sack in proper position within the device. Each of these bushings holds a disk body .inA place against the adjacent plate and clamps against the plate the adjacent end of the straining bag. Since the bushing which maintains the disk and plates in operative relation is swaged over upon its inner end against the inner side of the adjacent plate, when the bag wears out or gets a hole in it so that it is no longer useful it is not possible to merely replace the bag but the entire unit must be discarded and a new one put in. Any attempt to remove the bushings so that a new bag may be placed upon the spring body will merely result in the damaging oi the unit to such an extent that it can no longer be used.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a bag unit in which the bushings may be readily removed from the end plates and the bag taken orf and a new one put in its place, thus making it possible to renew the straining unit when a bag becomes worn out merely by replacing the bag instead of replacing, the entire unit.
With the present invention the bushings at the end of the strainer unit are detachably coupled with the end plates and removably hold in place clamping disks which secure the ends of the bags in position.
The invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, with the understanding, however, that the invention is not confined to any strict conformity with the showing of the drawing but may be changed or modified so long as such changes or modifications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.

Referringnow more particularly to the drawing wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral l indicates as a wholeV the unit embodying the present invention. This"strainer unit which as previously'explained forms a part of a 79 device which is designed for use in connection with Yinternal combustion lengines `for straininggthe crank 'case oil, comprises'atubular cloth bag "i2 l in which is placed a relatively heavy helical spring 3. y
Secured to each end of the helical spring is a circular plate 4 which has an aperture 5 centrally therethrough.
In this strainer unit constructed in accordance with the present inventionthere is permanently secured to the inner face of each of the plates 4, coaxially with the opening 5, a threadedgnut 6.
While this is the preferred method of construction it is, of course, to be understood that the invention also contemplates the forming of a threaded opening at this point, as for example, the central part of the disk 4 may be thickened and have the opening 5 threaded. y
At the ends of the straining units are bushings 7 and 8 each of which is threaded at one end as indicated at 9, the threads being cut relatively deep so that there is formed at the inner Vend of the threaded portion a shoulder 10.
The threaded end of each bushing is extended through the adjacent end plate opening for engagement-with the threads of the nut; 6 and at the upper vend of the unit the bushing 7 has its threaded end portion extended through a iiat an-v nulus or disk 11 against which the shoulder portion 10 thereof bears. At the lower end of theA unit the bushing 8, which is of slightly greater diameter than the bushing 7, passes through an opening 12 in the central part of a relatively large disk which is indicated by the numeral 13. This disk is of materially greater diameter than the straining bag and spring over which it is placed and provided with a series of openings 14 through which oil passes in its passage through the oil cleaner of which the unit 1 forms a part. This --o form of disk is of standard design and needs no 2 -is extended through the end opening of the bag and threadably engaged with the adjacent nut 6. As will be readily seenwhen the bushings are threaded in as far as they will go each will rmly Y clamp the adjacent disk against the end of the bag and secure it to the adjacent end plate'.
At the upper end of the strainer unit the shoulder portion of the bushing 7 will clamp the small iiat annulus l1 against the adjacent plate 4 with the underlying part of the bag therebetween and at the lower end of the unit the bushing 8 will force the larger disk 13 inwardly so that the inpressed annular rib 'portion` 16 will engage against the adjacent part of the bag and clam it to the bottom end plate.
From the foregoing it will bev readily apparent that by constructing these straining units in the.
manner herein shown and described, when the cloth bag becomes damaged or worn to the point Vwhere it is no longer of use it may be readily removed and replaced by a new bag and the discarding of the entire unit will not be necessary as is at present the case. Y Y
. Having thus described the inventionwhat is claimed is:-
- 1. In an oil straining unit having a kframe having two ends and provided withran apertured plate at each end and a bag enclosing the frame and plates and having end openings. coinciding v,with said plate apertures, abushing threadably secured at one end in the aperture of a plate, and a flat annulus surrounding the bushing and held thereby in clamping relation with the adjacent plate and securing the edge of the adjacent bag opening to the plate. v
2. In an oil straining unit having a frame having two ends and provided with an apertured plate at each end and a bag enclosing the frame and plates and having end openings coinciding with said plate apertures, a bushingthreaded at one end and formed at the inner end of the threaded portion to provide a shoulder, said threaded bushing end being threadably engaged in the aperture of a plate, and a ilat annulus surrounding the threaded portion of the bushing and engaged at one side by said shoulder and forced thereby against the edge of the adjacent bag opening to secure the same to said plate.
3. In an oil straining unit having a frame having two ends and provided with an apertured plate at each end and a bag enclosing the frame and plates and'having endopeningscoinciding with said plate apertures, an interiorly threaded nut secured against the under side of a plate Coaxial with the opening therein, a iiat annulus overlying the upper side of the plate and having the edge of the adjacent bag opening interposed between the same and the plate, and a bushing having a portion at one end screw-threaded and formed at the inner end of the screw-threadedV portion to provide a clamping shoulder, said threaded portion extending through said annulus,V
