I'IIIIIIIA IN VEN TOR D: V36 69023 6 1?: Ga lraz'l BY THEE Patented Sept. 12, 1933 e 1,926,525' e 1 7 ATTACHMENT FOR SEWING oH'I Esft Y George H. Galbraith, Nevv York, NIX;- v U Application July '1,- 1931.;Serial Nesta-191 l 8 c aims. (cil a-141) i This invention relatesto new and useful improvements in a hemmer attachment for sewing machines. I The invention relates of cloth. substantially. 1% times around elastic tape and feeding it in this manner'to the sewing machine. 'The invention particularly proposes an arrangement whereby the tape within the rolled edgeof a guide can be moved slightly laterally at will tolcause. the sewing machine to stitch I and of the objects and advantages thereofdrefer through the elastic tape .whenever this is re-, quired... m
Itis' old to construct a hemmer which encases elastic tape and to make a provision whereby the ensue together with the entire cloth guiding -member[may be moved laterally for. causing'the stitches of the sewing machine to stitch it down upon the material whenever thisis desired. But in allof these prior devices it was necessary to encase the tape by bending over the edgeof the material, then guiding the tape over the edge and finally supplying a'strip of covering material over the elastic tape. When" thusconstructed, it is .quite easy to reach in between the materialsabout the tape and move the tape laterally.
' This. invention proposes particularly moving the tape laterally when completely enveloped in the edge of the cloth by'reason of thecloth being turned at least 1 /.{times. V
As another one ofthe objects of this invention, it is proposed to providea guide having'a member for curling cloth substantially 1 times around elastic tape guided through the center of the membenan arm pivoted onthe guide and extending into the curling member from the rear to the front for moving the tape at the center of theguide, and ajmeans 'for moving the pivoted arm. q r
The invention has for a still further object the construction of a hemmer attachment for'sewing machines which is of simple, durable construction, dependable in use and efiicient inaction, and
' "which can be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost. i v
" For-further comprehension of the invention,
ence will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of-the invention are more particularly set forth.
In'the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure: I l
Fig.1 is a plan view of ahemmer attachment according tothis, invention.
1 more particularly, to a 5 hemmer attachment capable of turning the edge Fig. 2 is a front elevational view of Fi g ij l'.
.Fig. 31's a bottom view of Fig. Fig. 4 isan enlarged fragmentaryele ational View looking inthe'i direction of theflinej of Fig. 1.
Fig. '5 is fragmentary sectional; view; taken on the line 55 of Fig. 2. I
The hemmer attachmenhac'cording to this invention, comprises abody in the .formiof'a plate having a vertical portion 10. integralfwith a top horizontal portion 11 at right angles to the very- 7 tical portion. {Aslide or carriage IZQisarranged upon the corner between theivertic'al' and horizontal portions- .This slide has a horizontal. top
portion 13. immediately adjacent the horizontal portion 11 of the; body and 'a vertioalside .portion '141immediately adjacent the verticalpor tion 'of the body. A screw. 15 engages' through .av slot 16 in the verticalportion 14 of the slide and threadedly into the vertical portion 10 of the body. This screw. together withfla pair or which alsomconnects Withthe slide .12. The intentionis thatlthelother armpr the'bell crank. M -20 connects with suitable linkage which terminates in the foot'pedalsothatjthe operator of the sewing machine may pivot the bell crank to cause moving of the slide and correspondinggmovin'g;
23 is attached upon the verticalportion 10 .of
the body and'another hook 2 1. is attached upon the slide.12. A .tensi0n spring25 is engagedbe 1 of the tape as hereinafter. fully set forth. A hook tween :these hooks and; normally 1 holds 'theslide I .12 in a retracted position.
- A tension'fmeans is provided whereby 'th e teiision at whichthe tape may be fed throughthe cloth' guiding member can be adjusted] This tension means comprises a plate- 26 'mo'vably' mountedupon screw 2'7 projecting from .thejver'- I tical portion10. Astud v2 8 projects from the .tion 10 and serve to limit motionof the plate 26' "laterallyonly. A tongue 32 is bent off .irom one has Zone oflits ends connecting with. alink'22 edge of the plate and isengageable by the end 33 of. an arm adjustably mounted onthe verti calportion 14 of the slide. This latter mentioneda 26 and the vertical portion 10.
1 40 pass.
arm has a slot 34 through whichscrews35pass.
These screws. are threadedly engaged into' the slide 12. The tape indicated on the drawing by reference numeral 36 passes between the plate A 'cloth' g'uiding member 37' hasa projecting 1ug38 formed with slots 39 through which screws the horizontal portion 11 of the body for holding'the guide in fixed position on the body. The
details of the guide 37 willn'otbe. gone into en' tirely since such guides arergenerally known.
Suffice it to say, that one edge of the guide'is' rolled around at the portion'indicated at 4 1 and another member 42 attached on the guide and also rolled around in a manner so'that cloth may be passed through the guide and encircle the tape 36 at least l /gtimes. a slot .43 in the top ofthe guide 37 allows thetapejto'pass up into the topside of the guide whereupon another slot 44 allows it to pass immediately under the top side through the various. turns 41jand 42.
The mainffeature of this invention comprises an arm 45 whichis flat against the under side of the guide 3'7 and pivotally'mounted by ascrew- 46'. The arm 45 extends through the turns ofthe clothguiding mechanism from the rear to the front at 'thepoint whe'r'e'the'ta'pe discharges from the guide. Atthe front portion, thearm f 45 is enlarged andbent upon itself, indicated by numeral 47, so as to 'be'of substantially oval form as clearly shown in Fig. 4'; This enlarging. and bending forms-a short vtube on the end of'the arm 45 which carries theelastic'tape andwhich is capable of moving thegtape laterally. ,The arm 45 has an extension 48 on the opposite sideof the pivot 46 and .a spring 49acts betweentheexten sion 48 and theunderside of the guide member 37 'for normally pivoting the arm45'into its neutral or operating position; A finger :50 is ad justably mounted u on the slide 12by reason or screws 51 engaging'through a slot 52 in the nnger and threadedly into the horizontal portion 13 r the slide. 4 This finger 50'has anend portion 58 bent-at right angles and acting against one side of a pin 54. projecting from the bottom oi: the extension 48. The pin" 54"is als o engaged' by spring 49 which 'actsagainst its opposite side to cause the pivoting of the arm 45,. I Thespring 49 is shown 'Woundjaround a peg 55 in' the underside of the guide 37 and ending in anaperture iormed in the guide member.
. i The operation of I the device con'sistsinloperating the bell crank 20 tocau'se' the slide 12 to 'move for simultaneously releasing thetension of 'thej'tape' 36 by reason of lifting up theplate '26 and pivoting the arm 45 for moving the tape laterally within the cloth guide; The cloth which is intendedjlto be placed within the. cloth-guide is. not' shown inthe drawing since this part of the disclosure forms no'part ofthe invention and is generallyknown. Whenthis-cloth is engaged upon the" guide 37 it will encirclea'round-th'e tape which runs through the turns of the guide. As
1 the arm 45.1noves lateral1y,fthe oval-shaped pore 'tion 470i the arm will move the tape correspondingly laterally. When the bell crankjzil is released the plate 26fwill move back to its original position to again tension thetape.
While I'haveshown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be underwithin the scope of the invention as defined in These screws engage threadedly into" "member from the rear to the'front for moving 0 slide, a finger extending from saidslide and having an offset free end, a pin in the path of motion stood that Iido not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming the appended claims. p
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent'is:'- 1 w l.
