Aug. 22, 193 A. E. THOMPSON SAFETY RAZOR Filed Nov. 23, 1951 IN V EN TOR.
Patented Aug. 22, 1933 PATENT OFFlCE SAFETY RAZOR, Arnold E Thompson, Denver, Colo.
Application November 23,1931 Serial No. 576,852
2 Claims.- (Ci. -12) This invention relates to safety razors and more particularly to an improved safety razor construction wherein the blade may be stropped without removal from the holder.
,An object of this invention is to provide a safety razor construction wherein the head of the holder may be adjusted to any desired angle with respect to the handle, the head including a,
guard member removably carried thereby.
Another object of this invention is to provided a safety razor including a blade which is releasably clamped in the holder, which holder may be adjusted so as to vary the angular relation of the edge of the blade with respect to the longitudinal axis of the handle, this angular adjustment being made within an angle of 180 so that the razor may be used with either hand.
The above and various other objects and advantages of this invention will in part be described in and in part be understood from the following detailed description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a rear view in elevation of the completely assembled razor constructed according to the preferred embodiment of this invention, showing the head mounted in one angle with respect to the axis of thehandle;
Figure 2 is a detail side elevation of the razor blade and holder with the guard removed therefrom;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary enlarged front elevation of the holder with the blade removed therefrom;
Figure 4 is a detail bottom plan view of the guard;
Figure 5 is a fragmentary perspective view of the holder;
Figure 6 is a fragmentary section of the handle showing an end elevation of the holder and blade;
Figure '7 is a detail top plan view of the guard;
Figure 8 is an end elevation of the razor blade holder with a blade mounted therein with the handle detached;
Figure 9 is a top plan view of the razor blade;
Figure 10 is a top plan view and a side elevation of the spring used for holding the razor blade holder in adjusted relation with respect to the handle.
Referring to the drawing wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 1 designates generally a handle of suitable configuration which, in the present instance, has been disclosed as being round or substantially cylindrical in form, which is provided with a reduced flats tened upper end portion .11 on which is mounted a razor blade holder, generally designated as 2. This razor bladeholder 2 is mounted on a pivot 8 which extends through the upperend of the reduced extension 11.
The holder 2 comprises a single piece of relatively thin metal which is bent at substantially the middle thereof, and-thefree ends 13 of the holder 2 constitute razor blade clampingmembers for holding a razor blade 10 therebetween. The closed or rear portion of the' holder 2 is bent in substantially U-shaped form as shown at 14, the space between the parallel legs of this U-shaped portion 14 being suflicient to receive therebetween the flattened portion 11 of the handle 1. a
The central portion of the holder 2 has a lug Gpressed out therefrom, which lug extends in a direction parallel with the. confrontingleg of the U-shaped member 14, and the pivot 8 extends from the outer leg of the U-shaped member 14 through the upper end of the handle 11 and into this lug 16. The cutting out of this lug 6 provides an opening 9 in the body of the holder, which opening facilitates the removal of the blade 10 in the event the blade sticks between the clamping arm 13 of the holder;
The resiliency of the clamping armsf13 is' such that when the guard which is generally designated as 3, is removed from the holder 2, the blade 10 will be firmly held therebetween so that the holder 2 may be adjusted relative to the handle 1, as shown in Figure 2, in which position, the blade may be stropped after the manner of a conventional straight back razor.
The guard 3 comprises a body 15 which has at each end thereof returned clamping arms 4, which engage about the ends of the clamping members 13 and hold these clamping members 13 tightly against the blade 10 in addition to holding the guard 3 on the holder 2. 'A toothed member 16 is secured to the body member 15 by means of extensions 17 which are formed with the toothed member 16 and the body 15. These extensions 1'? are disposed on an angle to the body 15 so as to position the toothed guard 16 on an angle with respect to the keen edge of the blade 10.
In order to provide means for limiting the insertion of the guard 3 on the holder 2, I have provided cut out portions 18 at each end of the blade 10 extending inwardly from the keen edge thereof, and the guard 3 is provided at each end thereof with upstanding stop lugs 5, which engage in these out out portions 18 so that the toothed guard member 16 will at all times be disposed in the same position relative to the keen edge of the blade 10.
A resilient plate 7 is interposed between the upper end of the reduced member 11 and preferably this reduced handle portion 11 is cut away, as at 19, so as to receive this spring '7, which spring is adapted to hold the blade holder 2 in any desired angular position with respect to the longitudinal axis of the handle 2.
In the use of this razor, the blade 10 may be readily inserted between the clamping arms 13 of the holder 2 after which the guard 3 may be placed in a position where the clamping members 4 will hold the guard in a position where the toothed member 16 will be disposed slightly forwardly of the keen edge of the blade 10. The holder 2 may be adjusted to any desired angular position either with the keen edge of the razor blade 10 disposed in a plane parallel to the longitudinal axis of the handle 1 or with the blade disposed'at any other angle relative to the longitudinal axis of the handle 1. The spring 7 will maintain the holder 2 in any desired position relative to the handle 1. When it is desired to strap the blade 10, the'guard 3 may be slipped oiT of the holder 2 and the holder 2 swung into a position where the keen edge of the blade 10 is in a plane parallel with the longitudinal axis of the handle 1. The bight of the U-shaped member 14 of the holder 2 will serve as a fulcrum or smooth backing so that the blade maybe turned at the end of each stroke on the strop.
7 as to permit the ready and cheap manufacture thereof.
It is, of course, understood that various changes and modifications may be made in the details of construction and design of the above specifically described embodiment of this invention Without departing from the spirit thereof, such changes and modifications being restricted only by the scope of the following claims.
What is claimed is:
l. A safety razor blade and holder therefor comprising in combination, a blade, a handle, a reduced extension on one end of the handle, and a holder pivoted to said extension, said holder comprising a plate bent upon itself with the bight bent to form a substantially U-shaped extension engaging member from end to end of the plate, said U-shaped member being disposed on an angle to the balance of the plate, said U-shaped member having one leg thereof longer than the other leg, a lug struck from the plate intermediate the ends thereof and extending in a direction parallel to a confronting leg of the U-shaped member, a pivotal member extending through one leg of the U-shaped member and through the extension and the lug to swingably mount the holder on the handle, and a spring engaging the lug and the extension to yieldably hold the holder in adjusted position relative to the extension.
2. A safety razor blade and holder therefor comprising in combination a blade, a handle, a reduced extension on one end of the handle, and a holder pivoted to said extension, said holder comprising a plate bent upon itself with the bight bent to form a substantially U-shaped extension engaging member from end to end of the plate, said U-shaped member being disposed on an angle to the balance of the plate, said U-shaped member having one leg thereof longer than the other leg, a lug struck from the plate intermediate the ends thereof and extending in a direction parallel to a confronting leg of the U-shaped member, a pivotal member extending through one leg of the U-shaped member and through the extension and the leg to swingably mount the holder on the handle, a spring engaging the lug and the extension to yieldably hold the holder in adjusted position relative to the extension, and a guard member engaging about the free edges of the plate to hold a razor blade therebetween and protect the cutting edge of the blade projecting beyond the holder.
