7 Claims.

This invention relates t garments and refers more particularly to riding breeches.

As is we11 known, riding breeches, extend down below the knee of the wearer to be reclalved in the tops 0f be boots, and to hold them down in the boots, it is necessary to fit the lower leg portions snugly to the calf. Bub as the leg portions of the breeches must be passecl over the feet and calves, a snug fit cannou be oba ined wlthout slitting the same upwardly a distance from the bottom.

Heretofore lt has been customary 190 provide either buttons or laces for closing the slits. Where buttons were used there was always untidy gapplng between the buttons, button holes to wear ou and buttons 130 come off; and where laces were used, there we1e eyelet rings to pul1 out or hand made eyelet holes to fringe. Moreove1 in b0th cases, closing the slits was allways a tedious slow task.

With these and. other objectionable features of existing breech construction in mind this in vention has as one of its objects to provide a simple but effective construction for the leg portions of riding breeches and similar garments,

in which the required leg opening is obtalned with a slit 01" minlmum length and a novel flap arrangement provides an adjustable closure which entirely obviates objectionable buttons and lacings.

Another object of this invention resides in the provision 0f substantially stifl 1ibs sewed into ehe leg portions directly beneatn the knee t0 assist in holding the same down into the boot and to preclude objectionable wrinkllng.

With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, thls invention resides in the nove1 construction, combinatlon and arrangement cf parts substantially as hereinafter described and more partieularly defined by the appended clairns, lt being Understoodthat such changes in the precise embodiment of the hereindisclosed invention may be made as come within the scope of the claims.

In the accompanying drawing, one complete example of the physical embodiment of this invention is illustrated constructed according to the best mode so far devised for the practical applicatlon of the principles thereof, and in Q which:

Referring now mo1e particularly to the accompanying; drawing, the numereil 5 designates a pair of rlding breeches having leg portions 6, the lower ends 7 of which extend down beneath ehe knee to be received in the tops of the boote usually worn Wlth atti1e 0f this character.

Bach lower leg portion has an inner panel 8 and an outer panel 9 sewed together by a searn 10 which is located just 110 the inside of the f1ont 0f the leg. '1he upper portion of the inner panel may be reinforced by a piece 015 leather 11 sewecl thereto as is customary.

The seam 10 connecting the inner and outer panels 3 and 9 terminates at a. point 12 which is spaced a few inches from the extreme bottom 0f the leg portion. Beneath the end of the seam Ehe adjacent portions of the panels 8 and 9 are 1eft unconnected to provide a slit which increases the effective opening 0f t;he leg portion to facilitate the passage of the foot and calf therethrough.

l'.t is observed that the marginal edge of the outer panel 9 extends straight down 150 its bottom in line wlth ehe seam 10, but that the lnner pane1 8, beneath the end of the seam 12, is extended 110 form a flap 13 which is adapted to overlie the adjacent portion 01 the outer panel 9.

Sewed to the extreme bottom of both panels is a continuous cloth band 01 tape 14, the ende 15 and 16 of which extenol respectively beyond the marginal edge of Ehe outer panel 9 and the extreme end 01" the fiap 13 to be tied together as at 17. The end 15 is adapted to pass through an openlng 18 formed in the inner panel 8 adjacent the base of the fiap 13 and the end 16 is sufiiciently long to encircle the ca1f of the wearer. In this manner, the extreme bottom of the leg portion is adjustable to the calf of the wearer and may be d1awn snugly thereabout to hold the leg portion 9 down in the boot.

Above the termination of the seam 10 a pocket 19 is formed to receive a stay of whalebone or other suitable material 20. This stay serves 130 keep the portion directly beneath the knee tidy and glove fitting, and inasmuch as the breech has a tight fit at the knee, the presence of stays in preventing curling er wrinkling asslsts in holding the leg portion down in the boot. In other words, the tight fit at the knee holds the breech against creeping up at this point. Consequently, upward shifting of that portion beneath the knee would. be possible only if lateral wrinkling 01 curling were permitted. 'Ihe stays prevent such wrinkling and thus have a definite part in holding the leg portions down.

From the foregoing deseription taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, lt Will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art t0 which an invention of this charaeter appertains, that this invention provides novel means for holding the lower leg portions of riding breeches and similar garments down into the boots of the wearer witliout neeessitating objectionable Iontons lacings, er similar lastening means; and that a more convenient, more serviceable riding breech is obtained at less cest and without sacri fieing any cardinal point of comfort er service t0 the equestrian.

It is also apparent that the novel construction of this invention requires lese material than the eonventional type of breeeh and that due to the novel panel design adjustments and alterations can be made With minimum effort and cost.

What I claim as rny invention is:

1. In a garment, a leg portion large enough to be passed over the foot and calf of a wearer and sloping dex-vnwardly from a wide upper pe1tien to a narrow tignt fitting knee portion, means cannected with the lower leg portion and extending downwardly f10n1 the knee portien t0 prevent wrinkling and thereby hold the same down.

2. In a garmenta leg portion large enouglrto be passed over the foot and calf of the wearer and sloping downwardly from a wide upper portion to a narrew-tight fitting knee portion, and a substantially Stift rib extending downwardly fr0in the knee portion to prkaventvnrinkling anal thereby hold the lower leg pertion down in proper position.

3. 4. In a garment, a leg portion large enough to be passed over the loot and calfo1' a wearer anal to have a tight fit at the knee, a substantlally still rib extencling substantially lengitudinally of the leg portion adjacent the lower end thereof anal spaced from the extreme bottom to be positioned beneath the knee of the wearer to prevent wrinkling and thereby hold the lower leg per-- tion down in proper position, the lowei* leg 110rtion being provided With a slit beneath the substantially still rib, and a flexible band eonneeted with the extreme bottom of the lower leg portion and having it's ends extending beyond the mar ginal edge p0rtion of the slit to provide ties for dravving the extreme botto1n cf the lower leg portien snugly about the calf ofthe wearer.

to haVe a snug fit at the knee, a substantially still 1ib extending substantially longitudinally 01? the leg portinn adjacens the lowe1 end thereof and spaeed from the extreme bottom to be positioned beneath the knee 0f the weare1 to prevent wrinkling and tl1ereby hold the lower leg portion down in proper position, the lower leg portien belng provided With a slit beneath the substantially still rib, a flap forming one side 0f the slit ancl adapted to overlie the other side, and a flexible band connected With the extreme bottom of the lower leg portion and having its ends extending beyond the marginal edges of the slit to provide ties for drawing the bottom of the lower leg portion snugly about the ealf of the wearer, one end of said band extending through an opening adjaeent the flap whereby said end overlies the bottom of the lower leg portion as lt encircles the calf of the wearer.

6. In a garment of the charaeter described, a leg pertion ineluding adjacent panels extencling to the bottom 01 the leg portion, a seam connecting the adjacent marginal edges of the panels to a point spaeed from the bottom of the leg portion and eelow the knee pertion, said knee portion havin'g a snug fiton the knee of a wearer, the marginal edgeportien of one panel beneath the termination ef the seam extending in a straight line, a flap 0n the otl1er panel adapted to overlie seid extended marginal edge portion of the first mentionecl panel with the bottom edges of the flap and both panels substantially on a common plane, and a tape fixed to the extreme bottem cf the leg portion and having its encls extending'beyend. the marginal edge cf the first mentioned panel and the flap on the other panel 'te a-fiord tie means for drawing the flap over the first nientiened panel and about the calf o1" the wearer, the-end portion of the tape extended beyond the marginal edge of the first mentioned panel passlng through an opening in the second mentioned panel whereby the flap overlies the first mentioned panel witheut vvrinkling.

In a garment of the character descrieed, a leg portion open at its bottom and having a slit extending upwardly from its bettom to augment the effeetlve epening 01 the bottom and to enable the foot and calf of thewearer to be passed therethrough, said leg portion having a snug fit at the knee and the slit terminating at a point aoljacent the wide part of the calf of the wearer, a substantially stiff rib extending longitudinally cf the leg po1tion between the terminatien of the slit and the knee portion to hold the leg portion direetly beneath the l:nee 'against wrinkling and thereby hold the same dewn in .proper position a flap at one side cf the slit and adapted to over liethe other side, and a flexible band eonnectecl witli the extreme b0l3l30lfll edge o1" the leg portlon anal having its ende extended to form ties for drawing the flap over saidother side of the slit into sng engagement with the calf of the wearer.
