This invention pertains to pouring cups, and more particularly to a device for maintaining a constant head of metal while said metal is being poured from a ladle to a mold.
In casting a wheel of cast steel a somewhat different problem is presented from casting a wheel of gray iron, as it is very difficult to maintain constant fiber stresses or maintain the material homogeneous in a cast steel wheel unless some means is provided for properly distributing the metal. In some wheels it is even desirable to have the metal of the tire of one analysis, and the metal of the plate and hub of a different analysis.
Proper distribution of the metal has been effected by revolving the wheel mold either after the metal was poured or while the metal was being poured, but with this scheme of casting it is still necessary to properly regulate the rate of flow of the metal from the ladle into the mold in order that as the metal flows into the mold a definite amount of alloy can be added at a specific rate which will in turn produce a metal entering the tire which will have a definite uniform composition. For this reason an intermediate pouring cup was resorted to which acts as a choke for regulating the flow of metal to the runner cup or gate on the mold.
It is an object of this invention to provide an intermediate or choke cup for maintaining a constant head of metal supplied to the runner cup or gate of a mold.
Another object is to provide a choke cup Wherein the height of the metal contained in the cup and supplied to a runner cup is definitely and positively controlled.
A further object is to provide an intermediate cup of simple construction, inexpensive to make and maintain, and which fulfills all requirements of manufacture and service.
With these and various other objects in view, the invention may consist in certain novel features of construction and operation, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the specification, drawing and claims appended hereto.

Figure 3 is a top plan view of the choke cup shown in Figure 2.
Referring first of all more particularly to Fig me 1, the mold 10 of therevoluble type adapted to be rotated by means of the shaft 12 is preferably mounted adjacent the floor 14 of a pit containing any desired number of said molds. Each mold is provided with the runner cup or gate 16 0 verse rails 22 on which a carriage 24 is movably mounted through the wheel and axle assemblies 26, thus providing a means wherein the transverse and longitudinal position of the choke cup 28 may be readily regulated with respect to the movable ladle 30. The ladle is provided with a I suitably controlled gate 32 adapted to pour the molten metal into the cup 28 which in turn permits the metal to flow into the runner cup or gate 16.
The intermediate cup 28 is provided with the enlarged base or basin portion 34 adapted to be disposed beneath the gate 32, and which directly receives the stream of molten metal from the ladle 30. The cup is slightly constricted as at 36 and is provided with the socket 37 adapted to receive the removable nozzle 38 which is made of clay or other refractory material. The side, or sides, 39 of the intermediate cup are of a suitable height and are provided with the opening or notch 40 governing the height which the metal may reach in the choke.
With a construction of this sort, it is very easy to position the intermediate cup in proper relation to the ladle and runner cup, whereupon the ladleman may open up the ladle stream with full force, thus very quickly filling up the intermediate cup to the required point where he is able to maintain a constant head of metal in the cup. In and a definite size opening in the nozzle 38, there will be obtained a definite flow of metal from the cup, so that it is very easy to control the subsequent composition of th resultant alloy metal,
this way, with the definite head of metal as a known quantity of alloy can be introduced into the known flow; and it is to be understood that I do not wish to be limited to the exact embodiment of the device shown, which is mere ly by way of illustration and not limitation, as
r' various and other forms of the device will of course be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention and scope of the claims.
I claim: 1. A choke device comprising a Walled cup having a base, the wall of said cup being formed to provide an enlarged metal receiving portion and extending laterally to provide a restricted portion, and a discharge nozzle in the lower part of said restricted portion.
2. A choke device comprising a walled cup having a base, the wall of said cup being formed to provide an enlarged metal receiving portion and extending laterally to provide a restricted portion, and a discharge nozzle in the lower part of said restricted portion, said wall having an opening for governing the head of metal in said cup.
3. A choke device comprising a walled cup having a base, the wall of said cup being formed to provide an enlarged metal receiving portion and extending laterally to provide a restricted portion, and a discharge nozzle passing through said base at said restricted portion.
4. A choke device comprising a walled cup having a base, the wall of said cup being formed to provide an enlarged metal receiving portion and extending laterally to provide a restricted portion, and a discharge nozzle passing through said base at said restricted portion, said wall having an opening for governing the head of metal in said cup.
5. A choke device comprising a walled cup having a base, the wall of said cup being formed to provide an enlarged metal receiving portion and extending laterally to provide a restricted portion, and a discharge nozzle in the lower part of said restricted portion, said wall adjacent said enlarged portion having an opening for governing the head of metal in said cup.
6. A choke device comprising a walled cup having a base, the wall of said cup being formed to provide an enlarged metal receiving portion and extending laterally to provide a restricted portion, and a discharge nozzle in the lower part of said restricted portion, said wall adjacent said enlarged-portion having a notch in the upper edge thereof for governing the head of metal in said cup.
