"Novelconstructionf and ed once at itstwo end-edges, forming folds-3 combinations aredescribed, illustrated, and and & asshown in Figures 1, 2, and 4, In specifically set forth in theclaims. making the body A, folds 1 'and2 are formed In the accompanying drawing+ v 1i first and then the folds '3 and are formed. Figure 1 is a perspective of what seems to Except at the folds- 1', 2, 8 and 4, the body A me now to be thepreferred embodiment of is of one thickness of metal. Oleat B, also, my invention for use as a drawer partition. is folded at its, side edges and its free end It indicates, also, in dot-and-dash lines a edge so that there will be no sharp edges ex dull-edge tool in position to form an'ind'efntaposed ,butfor the sake of simplicity the drawtion near the rear end of the device prepara ingdoes not show thesefolds. P tory to bending the device to a right angle Adjacent to the fold 3, which isat the forat the indentation. Y ward endofthe body'A,-and parallel thereto, 7 Figure 2'shows two perspectives of the dc is an indentation 5-'in-the body A and across vice after being bent in the operation-of in itswidth; Between this indentation 5 and stallation in a drawer. The perspective at the forward end-edge of the body 'A arejtwo the forward end of the drawer :shows the holes6 and 7 extending through the six thickforward end of the device bent to a right an nesses of metal. At the "rear end of body A gle at theiindentation 5 shown in Figure-1, are two series of holes, series 8t0 13,inclusive,." and the device being in position to have its and series '14 to 19, inclusive, extending rear end marked Where it-is to bebent to a through the folds 1 and'2, respectively, the right angle tofit'in the drawer as shown by holes 8 andll being the ones nearest the rear the perspective appearing at the rear of the edge ofthe body A and extending through drawer. I The latter-mentioned perspective the six thicknesses of metal Each hole of shows the device after it has been bent at series 8'to 1 3,inclusive, is directly opposite a both ends and positioned in the drawer pre hole of the series 1ei'to'19', inclusive, that is paratory to itsbeing fixed in'that position by a line drawn through the center of each of tack's'or nails: it shows, also, the free end of the holes of series-8 to'13, inclusive, and percleat B bent parallel with the bottom of the pendicular tothe side edges of body Awould drawer preparatory to being fixed thereto'by pass through the center of a hole of s'eries'14 1 Figure 3 is a cross-section'ofthe device .foldedin With'the f ld ab t midw y 100.
Theobjects of the invention areto proshown in the perspective appearing at the drawer atthe desired position.
the length of said fold 2, thereby being fixed to fold 2. The free end ofthe cleat B is bent over fold 2 to extend to the adjacent side edge of the body A and then bent back upon itself on a line as nearly as possible identical.
forward end of the body A is first bent to a right angle on the line of the indentation 5.
A person can do the bending fairly easily and accurately by placing the deviceon a'boX or board so that the line of the indentation 5 is directly over the edge of the box or board and pressing or striking the forward end of the folds downward until it is bent to a right angle with thejin'dentationf5 becoming the inner corner of the right angle. Then the device is held across the top of a drawer asshown by the perspective at the forward end of the drawer 25 of'Figure 2 and a mark is made on the body A at the edge adjacent to the drawer and on the side of the body that.
is shown uppermost in Figurel to indicate where it is to be bent at right angles to fit in Then a mark is made in a similar manner'at the opposite edge of the body, and a line drawn across the body joining these two marks. A
' dull-edge tool 23such as indicatedby the dotand-dash lines of Figure 1 is then held with its dull edge onthe line, drawn across the body A and the said tool 23 hammered so that it indents the body A on said line. The body is then bent to a right angle along this indentation in a manner similar to the manner in which the body A was bent along indentation 5, this second indentation becoming the inside corner 24 of the right angle bend. The device is then positioned in the drawer 25 as shown in the perspective at the rear of the drawer in Figure '2 and the free end of the cleat B is bent 'atline 21"until the circular edge of the hole 22 lies parallel with the bottom of the drawer. Then the device is fixed in the desired posit-ion by tacks or nails driven through holes 6 and 7, 8 and .14, 11 and 17, the holes 11 and 17 being the holesnearest the corner 24 through which tacks or nails can conveniently be driven into the drawer 25, and through hole 22. i
The device can be'made with the forwardend of the body A'bent to a right angle along the line of indentation 5 instead of simply indented. The advantage of its being simply indented is that it is] easier and more economicalto handle and ship... Also, the article can be manufactured with a series ofindentations at the rear end of the body A, to simplify the bendinglnecessary to fitting the device in a drawer; inwhich case the person installing the device would not need to useatooli28 to indent the body A. None of such indentacan be connected to the body when the de-' vice'is made. 'The cleat or cleats hold the installed device morefirmly in position than y it would beheld without a cleat. The cleat or cleats can be movably connected to the body A in such a manner that it or they can be fastened to the drawer at any one of a; number of locations. v a
In caseithicker sheet metal is used in mak ing the device, the body A can be a fiatpiece of sheet metal having no folds at'the edges, but having, instead, reenforcing strips afiixed thereto by welding or'other'means, and having an indentation 5 at the forward end of-the body A and a series of indentations at therear endof said body, series of holes 8 to 13,'inelusive, and 14 to 19, inclusive, cleat equivalent to cleat B- welded or riveted to the body A. The indentations ca-n be made either by a blow or pressure of a'tool or by removingsome of the metal along the line of indentation by machining orother' means.
The device made of the heavier sheet metal can be installedin a drawer by the method described in the preceding paragraph. In
stead of the cleat or cleats B being weldedor riveted to the body,it or theycanbe movably connected to the body in such amanner that it or theycan be fastened to thedrawer at any one ofa number of locations.
Folds such as shown in thedrawing, reenforcing strips, or other reenforcingmeans, may be on one side only of the device or on both sides. Reenforcing formationscan be employed which extend from one side to'the other, such, for instance, as a curl at .-tlre edges.- When the device has the reenforoing means on one side only the indentations fcan be made either on .thatside or on the other side, andv the device bent either .so that the reenforcing means are on the. inside of the bend or on'the outsidegbut usually thebetter results appear to follo-wvvhen the bend is made with the reenforcing means on the outmade either at thereenforcing means only or in the entire Width of the device; satisfactory results .follow both methods, the bend being sharper, however, along its lentir'e length when'the indentation isin the entire width. V
Other details ofcon'stru'ction may beresorted to without departing 'from -t-hespirit of the invention. w
lVher-e the device is to be used as a partition in a room of a building, or :asaawa ll, a c-lea't'or cleats may be connected withl several sides or edges of the body of the device in order that said cleat or cleats can be fastened to such objects as floors, ceilings, or
other building members or attachments.
I claim:
'1. A sheet metal partition comprising a 2. A sheet metal partition comprising a relatively thin metal sheet having a pair of E opposite sideedgesreenforced with one or more additional thicknesses of sheet metal for providing lateral stifiness against bending,
a series of transversely aligned pairsof indentations formed across said'reenforced side edges for facilitating the bending of. said partition along a selectedpairof indentations in fitting the partition inplace, and a fastening cleat adjustable along the reenforcing of one of said sideedgesr I y c 7 MARSHALL K.=MoCOSI-I.
