This invention relates to control apparatus for radio receiving instruments.
' The main objects of this invention are to provide control apparatus of this kind having a single operating member by which various elements of the instruments may be selectively regulated either independently or simultaneously; to provide a variable control member which is adapted for installation on the instrument board of a vehicle; to provide means for adjus'tably conditioning radio instrument control apparatus for installation in vehicles having instrument boards of various constructions and inclinations which are located at diverse distances from the receiving set; and to provide means of this kind which will open and close a tube circuit switch.

In the form shown, a radio receiving unit including a casing, 1 is supported on a bracket 2 which is secured to a dash 3 of a vehicle and located directly above the toe board 4 thereof. The casing 1 has a front wall 5 which faces rearwardly with respect to the vehicle. Mounted on the wall 5 is a tuning instrument 6 such as a variable condenser or variometer including a rotatable part 7 which is carried by a shaft 8. A rheostat 9 or other volume regulating means is provided for varying the intensity of the audible reception. The bulb circuit 11 includes, a switch 59 having a resilient contact member 12 and a cooperating contact member 13 secured to the inner end of the core of the rheostat 9 by a screw 14;. These contact members are separated by an insulating member 15. The contact member 13 has a forwardly extending flange 16 on its upper end which normally abuts the side of the contact member 12 which extends above the flange 16 as shown in Fig. 1. The lower end of the contact part 12 is electrically connected with the conductor 17 of the rheostat. The bulb circuit may be broken by deflecting the upper end of the contact member 12 to the left as viewed in Fig. 1, until it is disengaged from the fl. nge 16 of the contact member 13. The rheostat and switch are carried by a bracket 18 having a vertical arm 19 which is held in spaced relation to the front wall 5 of the casing by a U-shaped spacing member 20. A horizontal arm 21 on the bracket 18 extends inwardly directly over the rheostat 9 and is provided with a pivotally mounted lever arm 22 which contacts with the successive convolutions of the conductor 17. This lever is pivoted at 23 upon a collar 24 which is journaled on a threaded sleeve 25. The sleeve 25 is threaded on the inner end portion 26 of a shiftably mounted rotatable bar 27 which extends through registering apertures in the front wall 5, vertical arm 19 of the bracket 18 and in the sides of the U- shaped spacing member 20. A look nut 28 is provided for adjustably securing the threaded sleeve 25 in a selected position.
The outer end portion of the bar 27 which is received in the above registering apertures has a square cross section on which a pinion 29 is shittably mounted. The pinion 29 is located between the sides of the spacing memher 20 by which it is held in a substantially fixed position while the bar 27 is permitted to be moved inwardly and outwardly with respect to the casing. The pinion 29 meshes with 'a pinion 30 located between the front wall 5 of the casing and the vertical arm 19 95 of the bracket 18. This pinion has a hub part 31 on which pins 32 and 33 are formed. The pins 32 and 33 are journaled in apertures formed in the front wall of the casing and in the vertical arm 19 of the bracket 100 tcctii'ciy. and the pinion 3O meshes with gear 34 which is secured to the shaft 8 of the rot-table part 7 of the variable con- -'.lenser 6.

The control member 37 has a square cross section and it extends through an aperture in an instr inent board 53 of the vehicle in which it is slidably and rotatably supported. Mounted on the inner side of the instrument board 53 is a hracket- 54 having a U-shaped lower, extremity 55. A pinion 56 is located between the sides of the U-shaped end 55 of the bracket 54 and it has an aperture of rectangular shape in which the control member 3'? is slidably received. The pinion 56 meshes with a gear 57 journaled at 58 on the instrument board 53. This gear prefer ably comprises translucent material and it is provided on its face with graduations, not shown, which may be viewed through a sight opening 59 formed in the instrument board.
A bulb socket 60 having a bulb 61 therein is c: rried by a bracket 62 which is mounted on the outer side of the front wall 5 of the casing by bolts 63 which extend through the front wall 5 of the casing and form supports for the U-shaped bracket 20 and the bracket 18 by which the rheostat and condenser control apparatus is supported. The bnlb 61 registers with the sight opening 59 in the instrument board 53 and projects light through the translucent material of the gear 57 thereby rendering the graduations on the gear conspicuous. This apparatus provides indicating means by which the setting of the rotatable part 7 of the variable condenser is disclosed. i
In operation, the control member--37 may be conveniently manipulated by gripping the knob 65'.- thereon so as to either independently shift the bar 27- inwardly or outwardly or to independently rotate the bar. If desired, rotation and translation of the bar 2'? may be effected simultaneously. During rotation of the bar the variable. condenser is regulated and during shifting of thebar the rheostat is regulated. The switch of the bulb strument boards located at various inclina-l tions and by adjust'ably positioning the" threaded sleeve 25 on the bar 27 the control apparatus may be. conditioned for installation in vehicles in which the instrument board is located at diverse distanccsfrom the dash board thereof. This adjustmentmay readily be accomplished by loosening the lock nut'28 and rotating the shaft 27 while holdingthe,
threaded sleeve 25 against rotation thereby and moving the latter either to the right or to the left as viewed in Fig. 1 as desired. The above adjustable control apparatus may be advantageously used in cabinet type radios of the kind generally used in homes in which an instrument panel is employed inplacei of the vehicle instrument board shown. A radio receiving set including a casing having a variable'rheostat and tuning member therein,- control means remote from and in misalignment with. said rheostat and tuning'member, a rotatable'rnember fixed to said control means and shiftably mounted in said casing including divergingsections having a flexible joint, means operable by rotation of said rotatable member for regulating said tuning member, and means operable by translation of said rotatable member for varying said rheostat. In combination, a casing having radio receiving apparatus therein including a rheostat and a tuning member, a rotatab e shaft shiftabl y mounted in said casing, means operable by shifting and rotation of said shaft connected said r-heostat and tuning member respectively for selectively regiilating the same, an instrument board located spaced relation to said casing having an aperture therein, a rotatable control member shiftably mounted in said aperture, and a flexible connection between said shaft and control member having non relatively rotatable element holding said shaft and control member against relative rotation for allowing the latter to be positioned at diverse inclinations relative to said shaft.

I n combination, a casing having radio receiving apparatus therein including a pair of variable instruments, one being responsive to rotary movement and the other to shifting movement, mechanism for selectively regulating said instruments, a panel located in spaced relation to said casing, a rotatable control member shiftably mounted on said panel in misalignment with said instruments, and a flexible element connecting said member and said regulating mechanism.

In combination, a casing having radio receiv ng apparatus therein including a pair of variable instruments, one being responsive to rotary movement and the other to shiftiru movement, mechanism for selectively regii lating said instruments, a panel located in spaced relation to said casing having a sight opening therein, a single control member for said regulating mechanism rotatably and shiftably mounted on said panel, and indicating means mounted on said panel in registration with said sight opening and operable by said control member for indicating the setting of one of said instruments.

In combination with a vehicle having a dash and an instrument board, a radio receiving set including a casing located between said dash and instrument board and having a variable rheostat and tuning member therein, one being responsive to rotary movement and the other to shifting movement, means for selectively regulating said rheostat and tuning member including a rotatable shaft shiftably mounted in said casing, and a ro tatable control member shiftably mounted on said instrument board and non-rotatably and flexibly connected with said shaft.

In combination with a vehicle having a dash and an instrument board provided with a sight opening, a casing located between said dash and said instrument board having radio receiving apparatus therein including a variable instrument responsive to rotary movement and a second variable instrument responsive to shifting movement, a rotatable shaft shiftahly mounted in said casing, a rotatable control member shiftably mounted on said instrument board and flexibly and non rotatably connected With said shaft, means operable by rotation of said shaft and non- IBSPOilSlVe to shifting movement thereof for controlling said first mentioned variable instrument, an indicator registering with the sight opening of said instrument board and operable by rotation of said control member and non-responsive to shifting movement thereof for disclosing the setting of said first mentioned variable instrument, and means responsive to shifting movement of said shaft and non-responsive to rotation thereof for controlling said second mentioned variable instrument.

In combination with a vehicle including a dash and a spaced instrument board having a sight opening therein, a radio receiving set located between said dash and instrument board. and including a variable rheosta-t and tuning member, regulating mechanism for said rheostat and tuning member including a shiftably mounted rotatable shaft, a shiftably mounted rotatable control member extending through said instrument board, and indicating mechanism operable by said control member including a translucent element, said element being between said bulb and said sight opening and visible through the latter.

In combination with a vehicle having a dash and an instrument board, a casing located between said dash and said instrument board having radio receiving apparatus therein including a variable instrument responsive to rotary movement and a second variable instrument responsive to shifting movement, a rotatable shaft shiftably mounted in said casing, a rotatable control member shiftably mounted on said instrument board in m salignment with said shaft and flexibly and non-rotatably connected with the latter, means operable by rotation of said shaft and n tin-responsive to shifting movement thereof for controlling said second mentioned variable instrument and including an adjustable coupling adapted to be fixed on said shaft in diverse positions relative to the length thereof for conditioning said radio receiving apparatus for installation in vehicles of difi'erent constructions.

A radio receiving set including a variable timing device and a circuit having a switch therein, control means remote from and in misalignment with said switch and tuning device, a rotatable member fixed to s rd control means and sliiftably mounted with respect to said switch and tuning device and including diverging sections having a flexible joint, means operable by rotation of said rotatable meinl'zer for regulating said tuning device, and means operable by trans lation of said rotatable member for controlling said switch.

In combination, a casing having radio receiving apparatus therein including a variable instrument responsive to rotary movement and a second variable instrument respon ive to shifting movement, a rotatable shat 'dably mounted in said casing, means operable by rotary and shifting movements said shaft connected with id first and se ond mentioned variable instruments respectivel for regulating the same, a support located in spaced location to said casing, a rotatable control nieml'ier sliiftably mounted on said support in misalignment with said shaft, an indicator mounted on said support operable by rotation of said control member for disclosing the setting; of said first mentiored variable instrument, and a' flexible connecting member non-rotatably fixed to said shaft and control member resg'iectively.

In combination, a casing having radio securing apparatus therein including a variable instrument responsive to rotary movement and a second variable instrui'nent resaonsive to shifting movement, a rotatable shaft slidably mounted in said casing, means operable by rotary and shiftin movements of said shaft connected with said rst and second mentioned variable instruments respectively for regulating the same, a support located in spaced relation to said casing, a rotatable control member shiftably mounted on said support in misalignment with said shaft, and a flexible connecting member non-rotata-bly fixed to said shaft and control member respectively.

In combination, a casing having radio receiving apparatus therein including a rheostat and a tuning member, a rotatable shaft slidably mounted in said casing, means operable by shifting and rotary movements of said shaft connected with said rheostat and tuning member respectively for regulating the same, a support located in spaced relation to said casing, and a rotatable control member shiftably mounted on said support in misalignment with said shaft and non-rotatably and flexibly connected with the latter.

In combination, a casing having radio receiving apparatus therein including a variable instrument responsive torotary movement and a variable instrument responsive to shifting movement, a rotatable shaft shiftably mounted in said casing, a support spaced from said casing, a rotatable control member shiftably mounted on said su )port in misalignment with said shaft, a exible membcr non-rotatably fixed to said shaft and control member respectively and operatively connecting the same, means operable by rotation of said shaft and non-responsive to shifting movement thereof for regulating said first mentioned variable instrument, and means responsive to shifting movement of said shaft and non-responsive to rotation thereof for regulating said second mentioned variable instrument.
