PACKING AND DISPLAY CONTAINER Filed May 2, 1929 PatentedJuly 11, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT-OFFICE ARNOLD J. BANNER, F non'rH HAVEN, conivnc'rrcun- AssIGNon 'ro Envson FREEMAN '00., 1Nc.,a conronarron or NEW ORK V PACKING Ann msrLAY conrnmna Application filed m 2, 1929. Serial No. 359,734.-
Thepresent invention relates to containers employed for packing,"displaying and dis pensin merchandise and relates more particular y to a type of container composed of a plurality of containing sections which are folded together so that the sections lie top to top for packing purposes, and'for dispensing and displaying purposes, the sections are unfolded so that one section will stand behind and above the other, section. 2
In previouslyknown containers of a certain class, the two sections are composed of a single blank and the sections are so hinged together that they may be placed in the two positions above referred to. In'this type of box, the construction is such that the sections must stand, when set for display, in "a position wherein the center of gravity is often comparatively so high that the con' 26 tainer is apt to topple over, particularly when part of the contents are removed, soas to destroy the balance which might have existed when the container was completely filled. To obviate this disadvantage, the
sections are composed of separate members united together and supported by means which will hold the sections in determinable stepped relationto each other so as topro duce a tier-like effect. An invention em- 30 bo'clying these features broadly is the subject of a companion application, Serial No. 189,773, filed May 9, 1927 and the present invention introduces additional improvements or modifications in said former invention.
According to the present invention, the improvements, amongst others, consist of the provision of means whereby the union of the two sections together is rendered more secure and is more easily effected. Furthermore,
the arrangement is such that the sections are not entirely separated from one anothe'r'for packing but instead, they need be only moved into relative angular and vertical positions so that the sections ma be brought together with the tops thereof a utting or adjacent to each other. The sections mayalso be placed, one behind the other in stepped relation to each other. The former position is the one in which the sections lie when the container is packed for shipping and the latter position is the one in whichv they are placed when the container is employed for displaying and dispensing merchandise;
Besides the improvements in the means of connection, additional improvements have been made in the easel or support for the sections and all of which improvements, with others, will be more fully described with reference to the accompanying drawing, where- 111 a Figure 1 1s a perspective v1ew showing the 1 complete container set up for display and V dispensing purposes; 7 I g Y F lgure 2 1s a side elevation of the set up container;
Figure 3 is a plan view of the blank of which the rear sectionof the containeris composed; b
Figure 4 is a plan view of the blank of i which the front section is composed, and
Figure 5 is a detail viewshowing a separate blank of which the easel or support for the container is composed. p
Referring to said drawing, the complete container is composed of the front section 1 5 and rear section 2, each of these sections hav lngthe frontwall-3, side walls land back wall 5. The back wall of'each section is extended and folded inwardly to form an inner or double back wall 6. The extension 6 of the rear section is extended above the side walls at 7 and is out if desired to provide a cut-out display 8 arranged to stand prominently at the back of the container. The front surfaces of the side and front walls, also of. the folded in back wall of both sections only are exposed, consequently, printing on only one side of the board is required throughout the container. 7 I 7 Both sections 1 and 2 have open fronts to receive thelcontents, for example, cartons9 as shown in broken lines in Figures 1 and 2. The front wall of the rear section carries the tongue 10 shown in operative position in Figure 1 by dotted lines. This tongue 10 has expanded ends or projectionsll, a notch 12 section 6 is folded inwardly, the slot is formed and at the same time, the guide lip 15 is raised. The back wall of the front section is extended downwardly to form the easel or support 16. This etxension 16 is cut away to provide seats 17 between. re xtensions .18 and 19.
Inthe initial assembling, the blanks shown in Figures-3 and 4.hav.e theiriendsarnitedtogetherby means of-the-glue-lap :20 ad} hesively secured to the other end 21 of the blank. Previous to this iol'dingwor :arfter wards, as may be most convenient, the extension 16 is folded on the line' 22 and' the edgeof the extension 19 .isglued so as .to be adhesively secured tothebackwall of the section carryingthe same. j
In the final assembling oir't'he "complete c0ntain-er,the"twoblariks are folded in a .conventional manner to form two'separatercontainer sections. These sections'are'united together by means ofth'etongue 10beingi'n'sertedinto the slot laffirstby aside 'or'angular relative positioningof the=tonguesothat thenotch 12 will permit the insertion of the expanded ends'l'l. The tongue l0 iso'f,suflicient'length toallow the relative displacement o'fthetwo sections .so that the two sections may be brought together so thatthe contents will abut and in which .top to top pos'ition'iboth sections together are pushed into 'a'sliding sleeve'orthe. like, (not'shown) toform ashipping package. The expanded. ends 11 ;en-
gage the stock 'at each side of the slot and.
thus'prevent'withdrawalofthetongue.
*NVhen kit is desired to set' the container up for display, the "operator need orily'p'ush the tongue down into'th'e's'ldt, beyondthe projections 13 and-dur'ing which operation the rear container is converiientlyfseated in the 'easl orsupport 16. The engagement-of'the projections 13 prevents -the tongue "from Zheing pulled -out and thereby the two sections so unitedare firnily secured together against di laeemcnt. I
the foregoing described example, the easel is integral with the container forming blank. In some'ca-ses an easel-composed-of heavier 7 board is required, therefore, as
shown in Figure T), amodified form-of easel isdesigned. W ith. tl1is-'example,the easel is composed of a separate blank, substantially the same as in the other instance with only the addition of a tongue 23 arranged to fold upwardly and to be inserted into the open bottom of the rear wall "of t-he *front section.
In thisexamp'le, the proj cation "10 isengaged in a slot'or under atongue which would be providedin the back wall. Bymeanso fith-is engagement "and that of the 'tongue23,the easel is separately but'firmly carriedby the 'front container section, and when opened, provides a comparatively-rigid support for the complete container.
111 both examples, the supporting easel 11181113 of the sections.
.ltwill-further be noted the tongue may be vshortenedvor lengthened at its base so as to respectively raise or lower the position of ithe 'rear sectioniand thereby change the center of gravity to meet the requirement.
Various modifications may be made in carrying out the details of the-invention here- 'inbefore described and'it is to be understood that any modification coming fairly within the "terms of the appended claims shall be covered-thereby.
I claim 1. Adisplay'box of the typefhav'ing a pair o'if'box sections hinged =together,;said sections standing one behind the other aw'henfthe box is arranged "for displaying and end to end tongueiinplace.

4. A display i bOX according to claim 1 wherein said tongue .is capable-of a limited sliding movement to :permit adjustment of .the .rear .box section relatively .to the tfront boX, section, .and-aneans for supporting and .retainingsaid rear section in the adjusted position. I v
.5. Ardis pla y boxofthetype hat *in'gfront .and rear box sections hinged together and capable of .a relative sliding movement, said sections standingpne behind 1the=other when the box .is arranged for display and end to eendwhemthebox-is arranged for packing-and :storage characterized by a tongue carried by :one .box section slidably engaged in a slot .forme'din the other box section, said tongue capable of a relative sliding movement, said sections standing side by side when the box for limiting said sliding movement, and said means comprising projections located at the free ends and base of said tongue.
