PILE WIRE SPOON, HOLDER, FOR TWO-EDGE CUTTING BLADES Filedjpril 11, 1932 INVENTOR az 91 Devi/ev- ATTORNEY Patented July 4, 1933 UNITED STATES I FRANZ DEHLER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PILE WIRE SPOON, HOLDER, FOR TWO EDGE CUTTING BLADES Application filed April 11,
This invention relates to improvements in means for cutting the looped warp threads in pile fabrics such a mohairs, velvets, carpets and rugs, and it is the principal object of my invention to provide a novel and improved cutting head or spoon for attachment to a pile wire and adapted to hold a blade with two cutting edges which I call universal duplex pile cutting wire with removable blade, and which, while securely holding the blade will permit ready exchange and reversal of the same as soon as one of the cutting edges becomes dull.
One of the disadvantages connected with the practical use of pile wires of the known constructions is the insecure hold of the cutting blades in the spoon so that during the rapid operation during which the pile wire is subjected to bending and tortional or other stresses, they work quickly loose and enter the pile, doing great damage to the goods before this fact is discovered.
I positively avoid this disadvantage by providing a spoon or cutting head which is equipped at its front part with a reinforcement serving the double purpose of strengthening the spoon and of holding the removable cutting blade at all times, and under all conditions in the proper cutting position posi- 39 tively V reventing-the blade from sliding out throng the top of the spoon,
Another ob'ect of my invention is the pro vision of the reinforcementin the front part of the spoon with a shoulder or angular member engaging a suitably shaped recess in the head'of the removable cutter blade.
Still another object of my invention is the provision of a blade holding or securing shoulder in the front part of the spoon serving to cover part of the removable blade and also preventing the blade from falling out through the side of the spoon which frequent ly happens with the blades held in the spoon by a tongue laterally bent out of the material of the spoon, and has the further purpose of strengthening the entire spoon construction.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a spoon for holding a double r edged cutter blade provided with a groove so constructed as to allow a ready insertion of 1932. Serial No. 604,487.
the blade into the groovebut having the lower edge of the material forming the groove curved in such manner as to prevent the loose cutting edge of the blade to touch the bottom of the groove and becoming dulled.
A still further object of my invention is the provision of a novel and improved cutter blade for the spoons of pile wires provided with two curved cutting edges for allowing the cutting of the loops with a certain swing greatly prolonging the period of usefulness of the blade. It will, however, be evident, that I may construct my cutter blade with one curved and one straight edge if so desired or required during the practical use of the same. It will be clear that I may construct my spoon for pile wires so as to fit all the various types of pile wires used in the various types of looms acommodating the same to the various types of blades used.
These and other objects and advantages of my invention willbecome more fully known as the description thereof proceeds and will then be specifically defined in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a spoon constructed according to my invention, partly in section.
Fig. 2 is a top edge view of the same.
Fig. 3 illustrates the formation of the walls forming the spoon groove.
Fig. 4 shows detail views of cutter blades constructed according to my invention.
As illustrated, a spoon 10 having a slotted or slitted stem adapted to be secured to a pile wire of any suitable construction, has near its front part a reinforcement 11 formed 0 integrally with the inner rear wall of the spoon and transversely thereto, said reinforcement is equipped with an inwardly direct-ed shoulder 12 adapted to engage into a recessat the head of a cutter blade as will i Q hereafter be more fullydescribed.
, A blade securing shoulder 13 01 side-support is formed with the spoon and is adapted to cover part vof the blade 14 when the same is inserted into the spoon through the groove 15 of the spoon, and to prevent the blade from falling and working out of the spoon and acts also asa strengthening means for the entire spoon.
The formation of the walls 16 or slot- .groove is best shown in Figure 3 in which the swaged walls of the blade receiving groove are shown to have their lower edges on a curve 17 to prevent damage to the lower cutting edge of the blade resting in the groove.
The cutting blades are shown. in Figure 4, in which 18 shows a blade having an upper cutting edge 19 and a lowercutting edge 20. The head 21 of the blade is recessed as at 22 for engagement by the shoulder 12 of the reinforcement 11 of the spoon. Both cutting edges are curved to arrange for a cut with a certain swing on the arc of a circle to increase the period of usefulness for the blade. The blade 23 alsoshown in Figure 4 has a curved upper edge A and a straight lower cuttingedge 25. g y I In operation, the blade is inserted into groove 15 from the top in the usual manner through a slot in the upper edge of the spoon and its recess is engaged with the shoulder in the reinforcement, the blade will then be securely held between the .rear wall; of the spoon andthe blade securing shoulder 13 of the spoon, and cannot fall out/during the operation of the pile cutter. If the upper cutting edge of the bl-ade becomes dull the blade is simply removed from the groove through the slot in the spoon and reversed and placed again into the spoon so as to present a new cutting edge tothe pile. g V
The curved lower edge of the swagedwalls from the cutter groove will protect the lower curved and unused cutting edge during the cutting operation performed by the upper edge against damage by the grooved bottom or edges of the swaged walls.
. It will be understood that I have described and. shown the preferred form of my device as one example only of the many possible ways to practically construct the same, and that I may make such changes in thefgeneral arrangement of the spoon and the blades to beused therewith as come within the scope of the appended claims, without departure from the spirit of my invention and the principles involved. I
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: 1
