TYCKO, '01 LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA COMBINATION FLUID SIPPING ANDFLOAT DEVICE Application filed November My invention relates to an ingenious novel device for creating childish curiosity and interest, and whereby a child inthe act of sipping the contents of a vessel, is encouraged to continue sipping, the floating figure during the sipping process having the deceptive appearance of swallowing the receding contents of the vessel.-

The primary object of my invention is the production of a device of this character whereby the interest of the person sipping the vessels contents may be enhanced to the extent that said person will continue to imbibe the liquid until the vessel has been drained.

An object is to provide a device embracing said characteristics which may be utilized as a practical sipping medium for all liquids and by all persons regardless of age.

A further object is to provide a device of this characterthat will be of peculiar benefit, and comprise a most acceptable feeding medium for infants. 7

A still further object of my invention is the production at a low cost of a device which is conducive to the health or" children, for, in the process of sipping the contents of the vessel, a child cannot gulp the liquid, but is con--v V strained to imbibe in small quantities.

A still further object, and equally conducivc to the health of children, is the production of such a device whereby the device of itself tends to interest the child to the extent that it will voluntarily sip the entire contents of the vessel, this being of particular benefit to mothers who are continuously confronted with the feeding problem of their offspring, and compelled by stratagem and force to get them to take or consume the proper quantity of nourishment, such as milk, fruit juices,

water, etc., required.

Another object, is the production of a device embracing said characteristics, whereby the childish interest created will by reason of the child consuming the entire contentsof the vessel, eliminate waste, and at the same time, by maintaining that interest, discourage the child from dallying so as to further eliminate the souring or otherwise spoilage of the vessels contents.

a device which, in addition to the foregoing, may readily be used in social functions such as afternoon teas, bridge parties and the like, as a novelty and for the purpose of a game,

emptying his vessel and. thereby causing the floatto contact with the bottom of the vessel winning the game.

I attain these objects by the combination sipping and float device illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Similar numerals designate like parts throughout the several views,'thenumeral 1 thus indicating an ordinary drinking glass containing a fiuid substance 2, wherein is in-- sorted my combination sipping and float device and comprising'the sipper 3, the lower most extremity of which diverges into an enlarged portion/t, which, although shown as a sphere, may readily conform to any other desired shape or form, said portion 4 being open as at 5 to admit into the sipper proper, the fluid contents of the vessel drawn upwardly and therethrough by the person sipping,

the uppermost extremity or top end having a rolled or formed edge 6 for the protection of the lips and mouth of the person sipping, a sharp edge having a tendency to out.

An air tight float member 7 formed to represent an animal as shown in Figures 1 and 2 indicatinga pig, andflas modified in Figures 3 and 4, to indicatea duck and a fish respectively, is positioned on the sipper, the body of the float being hollow as at 8 and air tight, a tube 9 forming an opening through the body of said float and sealing the latter into the said'body as at 10 and 11 respectively,the float engaging the sipper through said tube 9 and being movably disposed thereon, theaction of the receding or sinking fluid in the process of sipping causingthe float to move downwardly, the float figure at all times engaging the vessels contents and having the appearance of drinking the same, the enlarged portion 4 acting as a butt to prevent the float from disengaging from the sipper when the latter is withdrawn from the glass or vertically positioned otherwise.

In use, the sipper is placed in the vessel as illustrated in the drawing, the float figure having its head leading downwardly into the contents of the vessel. Thus, as the contents of the. vessel sink or recede by reason of the sipping process, the float figure appears to be doing the drinking. This fascinates the child, holds his interest, and he continues to imbibe to the very last drop.

Produced from materials readily obtainable in the open market, such as glass, celluloid, aluminum and wood, and peculiarly lending itself to a multiplicity of designs, finishes and color schemes to attract childish fancy, the device may readily be kept in "l a clean and sanitary state, thus offering the buying public a novel and practical means for accomplishing the useful results herein claimed.

ll hile I have omitted for the sake of simplicity, illustrations showing further adaptations, it should be understood that these are possible. I am also aware that slight modifications may from time to time be made in the details of construction without departing,however, from the scope of the present invention as herein set forth, and as defined in the claims which are appended hereto. Hence, I do not limit my present invention to the exact description or construction herein disclosed, but what I do claim, is:

1. In an article of the class described, the combination of a hollow rod having no interior obstruction and'having one of its ends enlarged to comprise a butt end, a float havmg an openingtherethrough and arranged butt end, said butt end comprising a stop means for retaining said float on said rod when the latter is vertically positioned for sippmg the contents of a vessel in whlch said hol ow rod is placed, said float in said slidable engagement on said hollow rodautomatically sliding downwardly towards'said butt end of said hollow rod upon receding of theliquid contents of he vessel in which said hollow rod is positioned in the sipping process, substantially as described. 7

3. In an-article of the class described, the combination of a hollow rod having no ob.- structions therein and a slidably disposed float connected thereto, said rod having one of its ends enlarged to form an abutmentto retain. said float in engagement with said rod when positioned in a vessel-for sipping its contents, and said float being adapted to slide clownwardly in engagement with said rod simultaneously with the receding contents of the vessel during the sipping thereof.

4:. In an article of the class described, in combination, a rod having an unobstructed hollow middle and an enlarged portion at one of its ends, a float figure comprising a body having an opening therethrough for engaging said rod in slidable relation thereto, said float body being hollow and sealed in air-tight relation with said opening, said enlarged end of said rod comprising a stop;

means for said float figure, and restraining the same from disengagement from saidrod upon vertically positioning said rod for use.
