This invention relates to an internal combustion engine and it aims to provide a double construction having free and unobr structed combustion chambers on both sides d of the piston head. c
It is generally aimed to secure light weight power and speed without sacrifice of material and such a construction as may be built for operation on the four vstroke cycle, eight stroke cycle or otherwise. The engine, in the case of a four stroke cycle `serves to increase the power per poundage approximately one hundred per centum compared to the averr age engine of similar cycle construction.

Referring specifically to the drawings, 10 designates a crank case, to which a cylinder generallydesignated 11 is bolted or other- 40 diametrically opposite enlargements 13, af-
fording guide channels 14. Y Vertically reciprocable within the cylinder 11, is a piston generally designated 15 which is detailed in Figure 5. Said piston 'r is closed at thetop by wall 16, and peripherally thereof has suitable rings or packings 17 in engagement with the inner wall of the cylinder 11. In addition, said piston 15 has hollow projections at 18, which are adapted to travel in the guide ways 14.

Thecrank shaft of the engine is suggested at 2,2"and a connecting rod 23 extendstherefrom and is conhectedto a wrist pin 24, which Vis secured to the piston in the sleeve or projection 18 thereof, suitable fastenings,prefer-` ably being used as at 24 to holdthe wrist pin in place. Itwill be noted that the anvil has vertical' elongated slots 25 at the sides thereof. ,accommodating movement ofthe wrist pin24i" H `It `willfurther benoted that the lower end of the piston 15 is divided or split so as to pro-` vide skirt portions 2G, which are received in and guided byarcuate slots 27 provided in the i lower end of .the anvil. `Said anvil has a base flange 28,' which is secured'in place by the bolts`1'2`and`also has ports or openings 29, inregistrywith the guide ways 14.
The explosions" take place between the head of anvil `and thehead 16 of piston 15, also between the cylinder head and the piston head. The intake of fuel, and exhaustion of spent fuel for` the chamber 30 inside ofpiston 15 takes place through suit--4 able ports 31 in the piston 15 coacting with" a port 32, port 33 beingprovided for intake and exhaust in chamber 34 between piston 15 and, cylinder` head 35. The ignition system, crank case, valve mechanism and in fact all exterior parts form no part of the invention andhencehave notbeen shown or at least have been shown but conventionally. the cylinder may be water-j acketed, as shown, or air-`cooled. The engine may be built in any of the approved types, that is cylinders in line, X type, W type, V type, radial or opposed, using'any kind of approved valve, cam or crank arrangement. Y
The ignition of the compressed charge in the chambers 30 and 34 may be effected by means ofspark plugs or other ignition devices that maybe placed in the valve chambers (not shown), or other selected location.

I claim as my invention l. An engine of the class described comprising a cylinder, a piston operable in said cylinder, a iixed anvil, a combustion chamber provided between the cylinder and said anvil, a wrist pin for the cylinder, said anvil having vertical slots through which the wrist pin moves, said cylinder .providing guide ways for movement of the opposite ends of the wrist pin, said anvil having an outwardly extending iiange disposed under the cylinder and having ports in registry with said passageway. v
2. An engine of the class described comprising a cylinder, a piston operable in said cylinder, a fixed anvil, a combustion chamber provided between the cylinder and said anvil, a wrist pin for the cylinder, said anvil having vertical slots through which the wrist pin moves, said cylinder providing `guide ways for movement of the opposite ends of the wrist pin, said anvil having an outwardly extending flange disposed under the cylinder and having ports in registry with said passageway, said flange having arcuate slots therethrough, and said cylinder having divided portions disposed and movable in said arcuate slots.
An engine of the class described comprising in combination with a crank case, a cylinder, said cylinder having diametrically offset portions affording guide ways, a hollow piston operable in said cylinder, ananvil located within the piston, said anvil having an outwardly extending flange disposed between the base of the cylinder and said crank case, hollow projections on the piston disposed in said guide ways, said flange having ports in registry with the guide ways and having arcuate slots, said piston having spaced skirt portions disposed and movable in said slots, a. wrist pin on the piston extending into said pro]ections, a connecting rod engaging the wrist pin and adapted for coaction with the crank shaft of the engine, and said anvil having vertical slots through which the wrist pin moves.
