Obviously the separate'movements of the narrowing device involve complication and loss of time, and it is an object of my invention to eliminate these drawbacks.
To this end I provide the usual narrowing comb extending all over the width of the section, with a tickler needle per frame needle which is adapted to serve for patterning as well as for widening and narrowing, but according to my invention I divide the comb and provide means for selectively dise placing its parts in unison and in opposite directions.
In a divided narrowing comb the parts will move in unison and in the same direction during patterning but in opposite direc'- tions perform their movements for narrowand widening.

Referring now to the drawings, 1 is a portion of the frame of the machine which is equipped with means for guiding two :independently movable operating bars 2 and 3. 4 and 5 are the two parts of the narrowing comb which are attached, respectively, to the bars 2 and 3 and equipped with the usual -tickler needles, and 6 is the frame-needle bar. 1 In the position illustrated in Fig. 1 in which the two ,parts 4 and 5 of the narrowing device are abutted at their inner ends for patterning, the overall width of the device is equal to the width of the bar 6 which in turn is equal to the width of the given sectionv of goods.
- The outer ends of the operating rods 2 and 3 are equipped'with dogs 7 and 9 and springs 8 and 10, respectively which tend to separate the two parts 4 and 5 of the comb.

The outer arms 16 and 16' of the levers for the cams 12 and 12' are connected-to a patterning device, not shown, by means of rods 17 and 17', respectively, and the outer arms 20 and 20' for the cams 13 and 13 are connected to the rollers 24 and 24.

Each pair of cams control a pair of stepped slides which in turn control the operating bars 2 and 3 of the cam parts 4 and 5, as follows: 23 and 23 are transposing slides with a single step at one end and with the other end adapted to bear on the cams 13 and 13', respectively, and 25, 25 are rollers for supporting the slides at their stepped outer edges. 22 and 22 are narrowing slides with, for instance, fourI steps at one end at their inner edges and with the other end adapted to bear on the cams 12 and 12, respectively, their straight outer edges bearing on the straight inner edges ofy the transposing slides 23 and 23', respectively. 24 and 24 are rollers inserted betweenD the dogs 7 and 9, respectively, and the stepped portion of the corresponding narrowing slide.

shown, so as to move the highest step of the cams 13, 13 into alignment with the correspondingtransposing slides 23, 23. The narrowing slides 22, 22 bear on the central steps of their respective cams 12, 12. The
'cams are displaced by means of the tension members 17 and 17 for shifting the comb parts in unison and in the same direction as required for the patterning.
The comb moves from the normal position in Fig. 1 as a unit, i. e., with its parts 4 and 5 abutted at their inner ends, to the left orv to the right for one needle, or for two needles, as required by the pattern. If the rod 17 is moved to the right the cam 12 is moved to the left and the slide 22 bears on a lower step of the cam 12. At the same time lthe rod 17 moves to the right but shifts the cam 12 in inward direction so that the narrowing slide 22 bears on a higher step of this cam. If the rods 17 and 17 are moved in the opposite direction, the slides 22, 22 will bear on a lower step of their cams 12, 12 and in any case the displacement of the slides is translated into reciprocation of the comb parts 4 and 5 as a unit in a given direction for one or two needles.
If it is desired to perform widening or narrowing operations by the parts 4 and 5 of the comb the rods 21 and 21 are moved inwardly and shift the cams 13 and 13 outwardly, causing the transposing slides 23 to bear on the lower steps of the cams. The
in Fig. 2, and the springs 8 and 10 separate the parts 4 and 5. In the example illustrated it has been assumed that the 'outward movement extends over two needles at both sides so that four frame needles are exposed between the separated parts 4 and 5. The parts are now reciprocated in opposite directions and away from each other by means of the bars 17, 17 and the cams 12, 12. By moving the cams 12 and 12 outwardly` for one or two of their steps, the narrowing slides 22 are-moved down for one or two of the steps at their inner ed es and the sides of the goods are widened or one or two needles. By moving the cams 12, 12 inwardly the narrowing slides 22 and 22 are raised for one or two stepsand the sides of the goods are narrowed for one or two needles.
The steps on the narrowing slides 22 and 22 may be so designed that the parts 4 and 5 of the comb are moved apart -for one or more needles per step.
It is understood that the machine which has been shown and described is only an example. The gist of my invention is that it is possible to pattern goods, for instance, stockings, throughout the widthof the leg (with the exception of a few unpatterned edge loops) with one comb and with the same comb and in a single operation to narrow and'to widen the goods simultaneously at both sides. `bviously it is also possible to pattern within the reach of each comb part 4, 5 during the narrowing or widening operations within the limits lof, the comb movement. v

I claim:
1. A straight-knitting machine compris ing a divided narrowing comb extendingnall 'over the width of the fabric to be knitted on the machine, a pair of slides per part ofk said comb, with two of their edges in sliding contact with each other, a step on one ol said slides, a fixed stop adapted to coadapted `to displace said rods, acam shaft7 operate with said step, steps on the other slide adapted to act on said comb parts, and means for varying the position of said slides with respect to eachother, said stop and said comb parts. 3. A straight-knitting machine comprising a divided narrowing comb extending all over the width ofthe fabric to be knitted on the machine, a rod'per comb part mounted to slide on said machine, stepped slides adapted to displace said rods, and means for reciprocating said slides.
