Referring to the drawings, the device as of a reversing illustrated is provided with a supporting structure in the form of a rectangular frame 3 1 which is closed in front by a door 2, hinged thereto and comprisinga viewing'aperture 3,

The shaft 16of thereduction gearing carries a'bevel' gear wheel 17 which is r in mesh with a bevel gear 18 on a stub shaft 19 mounted in the frame 1. To the latter a screw wheel 20 and a chain whe'el 21 are fixed (Figs. 1 and 4). With the screw wheel 20 a screw wheel 22 cooperates which'is rigid l with an axially displaceable claw clutch portion 23, the other portion 24 of this clutch being secured to the axle 25 of the upper winding roller 9. In similar manner, as shown in Fig. 5, on the axle 26 of the lower winding drum 10 a portion 27 of a claw clutch is secured and the counter portion 28 of this clutch displaceably arranged on this axle and provided with a screw wheel 29 rigidly connected thereto. 7 In mesh with the screw wheel 29 is another screw wheel 30 which is connected to a stub shaft 31 carrying a chain wheel 32 cooperating with the chain wheel 21 through the intermediary of a chain 33 (Fig. The inclination of the gear teeth of the cooperating screw wheels of the driving gear portion for the upper shaft (Fig. 4) is opposite to that of the screw wheels for driving gear portion of the lower shaft (Fig. 5). With this arrangement is attained that during "the change of direction of rotation of the driving motor, in consequence of the axial thrust, the two claw clutches are connected'or disconnected respectively, and particularly suchwlse, that every time the winding roller on which the picture strip is wound is driven by the motor, whereas the coupling of the other winding roller is disconnected. Suitably the winding roller from which the picture strip is unwound is slightly braked by any known means not .shown.
The reversing of the motor is eifected by reversing the exciting winding thereof by means of a switch 34 (Fig. 1) provided for this purpose which is operable by a lever 35.
The operation of the switch 34 sets in at the moment, when the picture strip is completely unwound from the respective roller, as follows: As shown in the Figs. 9 to 11, a portion 36 of the barrel .37 of the winding rollers 9,

The member39 cooperates with one arm 41 of a bell crank lever which is acted upon by a spring 42 which tends to push the arm 41 outwardly into a position, as shown in chain dotted lines in Fig. 8, thereby swinging the flap 36 outwardly. To the other arm 40 of the bell crank lever a rod 44 is linked which is passed with its outer end through the flange 45 of the winding roller to provide a driving member for a loosely mounted rotatable segment 46. Over the segment 46 of the upper winding roller and the segment 47 of the lower winding drum flexible tension members 48, 49 respectively are passed both tension members being connected to a an t in s istflieattnei t a elsd, at end 64 the SWltCll operatingiver 35.
The flap 36 is pressed inwardly by action of the wound on portions of the picture strip (Fig. 10), whereby the rod 44 is retracted from the path of movement of the segment 46. As soon as the picture strip is unwound from the respective winding roller to such an extent that the flap 36 is layed bare, the latter is urged outwardly by action of the spring 42, so that the end of the rod 44 projects beyond the respective face of the correlated winding roller. \Vhile the latter continues its rotation the end of the rod hits the segment 46, as shown in Fig. 9, to the effect of turning the same, thus exerting tension on the buckle 50, by means of the tension member 48, and consequently displacing the lever of inclination of the gear teeth of the screw wheels 20 and 30, the previously operative claw clutch 23, 24 is put out and the previously ineffective claw clutch 27, 28 is put in and incidentally the winding roller from which the picture strip was unwound turns in the opposite direction for winding on the picture strip. The reversing of the motor and of the driving gearing 'for actuating the other winding roller is effected entirely auto matically as soon as the picture strip is completely unwound from the respective roller.
Fuses 51 are included in the motor circuit, as shown in 1. For avoiding undue heating up of the picture strip the upper and lower walls of the frame 1 are provided with ventilating openings 52. The lamps 13 are so far set back from the plane of the door 4 that the main part of the heat produced can escape upwardly. Apertures 54 in the door contribute to enlivening the circulation of the heated air.
The picture strip 11 consists of individual foils 55 which are suitably so connected to each other that the ends of the foils are permitted of shifting in the direction of movement as well as perpendicularly thereto. This arrangement provides for completely compensating the displacements accruing from fluctuations in the tensile stressing of the material during the on and off winding periods and the variations of the radii of curvature of the wound on layers of the strip. For this purpose the edges of the foils extending transversely to their direction of movement are inserted in clamping rails or bars consisting of thin steel bands longitudinally folded in such manner that two portions 56, 57 bent down on each other are formed (Fig. 14). The ends of the rails are provided with notches 58 engaged by clamps 59 constituted by two eyelets pivot-ally connected by means of a hinge 60. The eyelets are slid on the ends of the rails, as indicated in Fig. 13, and then inserted in the notches.

The'fastening of the first and last foils of the picture strip to the respectivc winding rollers is effected in similar manner. To this endeyelets 59 (Fig. 7) are arranged at the end of a thinmetal band 61 secured to the winding roller and the ends of the rails inserted in the eyelets 59.
Inorder to avoid an undesirabledisengagement of the eyelets with thenotches 58, in the stead of the latter apertures 58', as shown in Fig. 15, may be provided. To the same elfect the eyelets or nooses may be arranged to grasp the rails by inherent spring action thus sticking to their positions. When the picture strips are comparatively wide, in addition to the two exterior clamps 59 a further clamp may be arranged in the middle longitudinally of therails 56, 57. This middle clamp may be formed by two pivotally connected fiat'hoeks for'engaging in rectangular openings in the rails. Alternatively a fabric band may be passedthrough aperture of adjacent rails; On the other hand several notches may be provided in each end portion of the rails so as to permit of displaying picture strips of different widths wit the same device. Thereby with narrower foils the clamps are inserted in the interior notches and with wider foils in the exterior notches with a view to interconnect the rails as close to the lateral edges of the foils as possible.
The rails may be provided with any suit able cross section; for foils in the form of posters, for example, a half round profile may be employed in order to. provide the necessary rigidity.
The edges of the foils to be inserted in the rails may also be folded over, moreover, in the thus formed folded seam an insert made of any suitable material may be placed so as to provide for a better clamping action of the rails.
This type of connection for the foils permits of exchanging any foils or all the foils of the strip in a convenient and quick manner. By simply compressing the folded portions of the rails the edge of the foil is firmly and unmovably held. In a device for displaying advertisements united in at least one strip, in combination, a housing for the device, comprising a' viewing aperture, at least one driving motor mounted in said housing, switching means for reversing said motor, two winding rollers for winding the strip on or oil respectively, a movable part of each winding roller controlled by engagement of portions of the strip wound on the respective roller and linked to the fixed part of the respective winding roller, a spring associated with each of said movable parts for urging the same outwardly, a bell crank lever for each winding roller controlled by the movable part of the respective roller, two disconnectable clutches one each intercalated between said driving motor and one of said winding rollers, means responsive to a change of direction of rotation inserted in the drive of said winding rollers for automatically disconnecting one of said clutches upon the complete unwindingof the strip from its correlated winding roller and for connecting the clutch correlated to the other winding roller, and an actuating rod for each winding roller linked to the related bell crank lever and passed with its other end through the respective end face of the roller for actuating said switching means associated with each winding roller adapted to reverse said motor on disengagement of the strip portions unwinding from the respective winding roller with the movable part of this same winding roller.
3. In a device for displaying advertisements united in atleast one strip, in combia housing for the device comprising a viewing aperture, at least one driving motor mounted in said housing, switching means for reversing sale motor, two winding rollers for winding the strip on or off respectively, a
- movable part of each winding roller controlled by engagement of portions of the strip wound on the respective roller and linked to the fixed part of the respective winding roller, a spring associated with each of said movable parts for urging the same outwardly, a bell crank lever trolled by the movable part of the respective roller, two disconnectable clutches one each intercalated between said driving motor and purposes, constituting ingly connecting a foil, notched ends of said rails,

.one of said winding rollers, means responsive to a change of direction of rotation inserted in the drive of said winding rollers for automatically disconnecting one of said clutches upon the complete unwinding of the strip roller adjacent said end face and cooperating with the end of said actuating rod projecting from said face, and two tension members one each interconnecting one of said segments with said switching means for reversing said motor.

A picture strip for advertising display comprising a series of picture 'l'oils the strip, metal rails for interconnecting adjacent foils and foldable metallic connecting means slid on the ends of the rails of adj themselves lengthwise of the rails for yieldsaid rails to each other in the longitudinal and transverse direction of the strip and adapted to maintain said rails parallel to each other.
5. In a picture strip for advertising dis play purposes, a series of picture foils constituting the strip, metal rails for interconnecting adjacent foils and longitudinally folded for clampingly receiving the edge oi and clamps composed of two pivotally connected portions engaging in the notched ends of the rails of; adjacent foils for yieldingly connecting the rails in the longitudinal and transverse direction of the strip to each other and permitting the clamps to adapt themselves to the respective curvatures when the strip is wound in a coil.
