This invention relates to pistons, and particularly to two-piece,.double end pistons intended for use in engines of the cam or swash-plate type, wherein a cam or plate of suitable form is secured to the engine shaft and operatively related to a plurality of pistons positioned around the shaft in a manner to be driven thereby when the pistons are moved longitudinally in their respective cyl- 0 inders.
One object of the present invention is to provide a piston formed of a plurality of aligned parts or members and having means associated therewith for aligning and securing the respective parts together.
Another object of the invention is to provide novel roller bearings for the rollers mounted in the piston and adapted to engage and cooperate with a suitably designed cam or swash-plate secured to the drive shaft of 'the engine.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for adjustably positioning the respective parts of the piston with respect to each other in a manner to rovide suitable cooperative relationship tween the piston rollers and the cam or swash-plate of the engine.
A further object of the invention is to' provide means formed on the respective member or parts of the piston and adapted to cooperate with the edge or peripheral face of the engine cam or plate for preventing rotation of the piston within the cylinder and in a manner to maintain the rollers in proper operative position with respect to the cam or plate.
A still further object of the invention is to improve devices of the character disclosed in sundry details hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
One embodimentof the present invention is shown for illustrative purposes in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view of a portion of an engine illustrating the application of my improved piston thereto;

The type of engine to which the present invention is shown as applied is more fully y be in my copending` application, liledOctober 20, 1928, Serial No. 313,901, in which a rotatable engine shaft is mounted in the frame members, and is provided with a cam adapted to be operatively related to a plurality of pistons mounted in cylinders formed inthe frame member and annularly and uniformly spaced around the' engine shaft. 1
Referring particularly to Figs. 1 and 2 of the illustrative embodiment of the invention shown in the drawing, my improved piston, designated as a Whole -b the numeral 10, is shown mounted in cylin ers 11 and 12 formed respectively in the frame members 13 and 14 of the engine, it beingunderstood that a plurality of these cylinders, each provided with a piston 10, are annularly and uniformly spaced around a shaft 15 rotatably mounted in the frame members 13 and 14, the said cylinders and pistons being positioned substantially parallel to theshaft.- 35
The frame members may be provided with'y heads, a portion of one being shown at 16, and in which intake and exhaust ports 17 and 18 respectively, may be formed. The ports 12? and 18 are provided, in the present instance, with valves 19 and 20, respectively, adapted to be operated by suitable 'rocker arm connections 21 and 22 controlled by suitably formed ribsor cams 23 `and 24 carried by a plate 25 mounted on the engine shaft 15.
In the present arrangement, the shaft 15 is provided with a cam 26 of suitable form, the edge portion of the cam being positioned Atbetween rollers mounted in the pistons in a I of the cam may intersect the of the rollers 34 with comprises an annular membe manner to be rotated thereby when the pistons are moved longitudinally in their respective cylinders.
The present invention contemplates a piston 10 formed of a plurality of aligned end portions or members 27 and 28 of substantially like construction adapted to be positioned end to end as shown 1n Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing and to be secured together by means of a plurality of bolts 30 provided with screw-threaded nuts 31 adjacent their end portions for drawing the members 27 and 28 toward each other, the members 27 and 28 being provided with hand holes 32 by which access to the nuts 31 may be obtained for the purpose above described.
The end members are of substantially hollow construction as` clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing, thereby contributing to their lightness, the opposite ends of the pistons being strengthened bymeans of ribs 33 extending transversely across the interior of the piston heads.
The end members 27 and 28 are each provided with an anti-friction roller 34, the rollers being suitably spaced from each other adjacent the inner ends of the members 27 and 28 and adapted to receive the rim of the cam 26 mounted on the engine shaft 15, the rollers 34 engaging opposed faces of the cam in a manner to rotate the cam 26 and shaft 15 when the pistons are moved lon itudinally of their respective cylinders linger the influence of an explosion or pressure within the head of thecylinders.
To permit of the arrangement above described, one side of the members 27 and 28 adjacent their inner ends is cutaway as indicated at 35, `thereby providin a recess in one side of the piston whereby t e periphery periphery of the piston and permit suitable engagement the opposed faces of the cam.
In thev construction shown, the roller 34 r having a channel 36 formed in its inner side, and suitably positioned within the member is a retainer 37 having a plurality of annularly spaced radiallyv disposed apertures 38 formed therein adapted vto receive rollers 39 in a manner to permit a rtion of the rollers to extend into the c annel 36 and the opposite side of the rollers to protrude inwardly from the inner face of the retainer, thus, it will be observed that the member 34 provides an outer race for the rollers 39. Positioned within the rollers 39 is a bearlng cone 40 having an outwardly extending annular flange 41 at one end adapted to engage one of the ends of the rollers 39, and at the opposite. end of the cone is a ring 42 adlzpted to engage-the opposite ends of the ro ers.
- For supporting the anti-friction rollers 34 and their bearings in the piston members 27 and 28, hollow shafts 43 are positioned Within the cones 4() and rings 42 and suitably mounted in bosses 44 formed in the members 2.7 and 28 of the piston, the shafts 43 being secured against accidental displacement by means of set screws 45.
For preventing rotation of the piston members 27 and 28 within their respective cylinders, and for maintaining the rollers 34 in operative position with respect to the cam 26, the cut-away portions of the members 27 and 28 are provided with an edge portion 46, clearly shown in Fig. 3 as positioned closely adjacent the periphery of the cam 26 in a manner to cooperate therewith to prevent any material rotary movement of the pistons within the cylinders.
or varying the distance between adjacent faces of the rollers 34 in a manner to provide eflicient cooperative relationship between the rollers 34 and the opposed faces of the cam26, a plurality of shims 47 are positioned between the adjacent ends of the members 27 and 28 and held in place by the rods 30 passing through apertures formed in the shims. Thus, it will be observed that by adding or removing one or more shims, the space between adjacent faces of the rollers 34 may be varied to properly position them with respect to the cooperating'faces of the cam 26.
It will be observed from the foregoing operative relationship with respect tothe cooperating faces of the cam or plate.
Obviously, the present invention is not limited to the precise construction and arrangement shown and described as the same may be' variously modified. Moreover, all the features of the invention need not be used conjointly, as the same may be used to advantage 1n variously different combinations and sub-combinations. What I claim as new and desire to cover by Letters Patent is:
1. In a piston, the combination of a plurality of aligned'substantially hollow separable' end members, detachableV means within the periphery of said members andextending longitudinally thereof` for securing the members together, anti-friction rollers rotatably mounted in the respective'members and spaced from each other adjacent the inner ends of the members, and means operatively related to said members. for varying the distance between said rollers.
2. In a piston, the combination of a plurality of aligned end members, means for securing the members together, antiriction means mounted in said members, and means positioned between the adjacent ends of said members for varying the distance between adjacent aces of said anti-friction means.
3. In a piston, the combination of a plurality of aligned end members, means for securing the members together, anti-friction rollers mounted in sa1d members, and means positioned between the adjacent ends of said members for varying the distance therebetween in a manner to vary the distance between adjacent faces of said rollers.
4. In a piston, the combination of a plurality of aligned end members, means for securing the members together, anti-friction means mounted in said members, and a plurality of removable shims held in place by said securing means and positioned between the adjacent ends of said members for varying the distance therebetween in a manner to vary the distance, between adja-V cent faces of said anti-friction means.
