This invention relates to blow out preventers.
In deep well drilling operations, it is customary to bore a hole in the earth with a drill, 5 lower a pipe casing into the hole, and then lower a drill through the casing' to make the hole deeper, smaller pipe sections being added to the casing from time to time and made to occupy the extensions of the hole made by the drill stem. For various reasons well known to those skilled in the art, it is frequently necessary to remove the drill stem from the casing.
High fluid pressures are frequently encountered which cause a rush and escape of fluid upwardly through the casing and about the stem, while the stem is being removed from the casing. At times such pressures are sufliciently great to blow the drill stem out of the casing, the disastrous consequences of which are well known. I
To prevent the foregoing, this invention has for its general object the provision of a new -and improved blow out preventeradapted to be quickly and easily applied to a drill stem to securely lock it in the casing should a blow out be threatened during its removal from the casing.
Other specific objects will hereinafter apear.
p The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings, of' which Fig. 1 is a sectional elevation of the assembled elements taken on the line 1-1 of Fig. 3; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the locking sleeve; Fig. 3, a top plan view partly in section, taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a top plan view of the locking sleeve open for application to a drill stem; Fig. 5, a partly sectional elevation of those elements, other than the locking sleeve, assembled; and Fig. 6, a top plan view of the packing sleeve.
The bowl 1, mounted on the casing 2, has internal interrupted threads 3 (Fig. 5). Mounted upon the side of the bowl, as indicated at 4, is the worm 5.
The drill stem 6 has a conventional tool joint or collar 7.
The packing sleeve 8 is diametrically split into two sections having interlocking fingers 8a joined together by a pivotal pin 9, and interlocking fingers 8b joined together by the locking pin 10. This sleeve has in its upper end an internal, annular flange 8c projecting 55 upwardly and inwardly. In its lower portion, the sleeve has an internal annular flange 8d having therein a plurality of fluid ducts 8d'.
Between the flanges 8 0 and 8d is the an- 6o nular diametrically split packing 1l; and between the packing 11 and the flange 8d is the diametrically split floating ring 12. The lower end of the bowl 1 is reduced to form an internal annular shoulder upon which the packing sleeve 8 rests; and a suitable gasket 13 may be employed to seal the space between the sleeve and the bowl.
The locking sleeve 14 is diametrically split into two sections having interlocking lingers 14a joined by a pivotal pin 15; and inter locking fingers 14?) joined by a locking pin 16. This sleeve has external interrupted f threads 140 to engage the internal'interrupted threads 3 of the bowl 1 and peripheral teeth 1403 to be engaged by the worm 5. It also has in its lower end an internal annular flange 14e to rest upon the internal annular flange 8c of the sleeve 8.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that should a blow out be threatened when the drill stem 6 is being removed from the casing 2, the packing sleeve 8 may be placed about and made. to embrace the drill stem 6, and the locking pin 10 inserted. The packing sleeve 8 may then be dropped into the bowl 1, and the drill stem (i lowered until the collar 7 rests upon the fla-nge 8c. Fluid under preslsure rising upwardly in the casing 2 about the drill stem will pass through the ducts Sri and force theI floating ring 12 upwardly to compress the packing 11 and thereby seal the space between the sleeve and the drill stem to prevent the escape of the fluid.
lf there is any danger of the fluid pressure being sufliciently great to blow the drill stem 6 ont of the casing. 2, the locking sleeve 14 may then be made to embrace the drill stem, the locking pin 16 inserted, and said sleeve dropped into the bowl 1 upon the sleeve 8. *00
The worm 5 may then be rotated to cause engagement of the external threads 14o of the sleeve 14 and the internal threads 3 of the bowl whereby the locking sleeve 14 'and the packing sleeve 8 therebelow will be positively locked in the bowl. Should the drill stem be elevated by the fluid under pressure, its collar immediately below the bowl will be engaged by the flange 8d so that the drill stem cannot be blown out of the casing.
Many advantages 'of an apparatus constructed in accordance with this invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art. Of these, attention is invited particularly to the simplicity of the apparatus and the fact that it may be very quickly and easily installed in an emergency, and as easily removed.
The invention is not limited to the preferred embodiment shown. Various changes may be made within the scope of the following claims.
I claim:
l. The combination with a casing having a shoulder and a stem having a collar, of a substantially diametrically split packingsleeve having upper and lower internal annular flanges, said shoulder serving to support said sleeve, said upper flange to engage said collar, said lower flange having a fluid duct therein, and a substantially diametrically split packing between said flanges to ge compressed by fluid passing through said uct.

The combination with a casing having a shoulder and a stem-having a collar, of a substantially diametrically split packing sleeve, the sections of said sleeve being pivoted together, said shoulder serving to support said sleeve, said sleeve having upper and lower internal annular flanges, said upper flange to engage said collar, said lower flange 'having a fluid duct therein, a substantially diametrically split packing between said flanges, and a substantially diametrically split floating ring adjacent said sleeve having an upper internal flange to engage said collar, and a lower internal flange with a fluid duct therein, a substantially diametrically split packing between said flanges, a floating ring adjacent said duct and Inovable by fluidv passing therethrough to compress said packing, and a locking sleeve sub- .stantially diametrically split to be placed about said stem and havingexternal interrupted threads to engage the internal interrupted threads of said bowl to a hold said packing sleeve in said bowl.
5. The combination with a well casing having a shoulder and a stem having a collar, of apacking sleeve having upper and lower internal annular flanges, said shoulder serving to support said sleeve, said upper flange to engage said collar, said lower flange having a fluid duct therein, and a packing between said flanges to be compressed by fluid passing through said duct, said collar being supported by said sleeve independently of said packing. v
