Description

May 16, 1933. F. w. BURNS 1,908,890
CIGARETTE EXTINGUISHER Filed March 1, 1932 Inventor Patented May 16, 1933 PATENT OFFICE FRANK BURNS, OF EAST BRAINTREE, MASSACHUSETTS CIGARETTE EXTINGUISHER Application filed Harch 1,
This invention relates to a device for extinguishing a cigarette, and in accordance with the present invention means is provided for removing the lit end from the ciga- 5 rette in a practical and eflicient manner.
The invention consists briefly in the provision of a memberinto which the lit end of the cigarette may be passed, and a second member mounted to operate in the first'mentioned member and to cooperate therewith for severing the lit end of the cigarette.
Further, in accordance with the. present invention, the cigarette extinguisher is simple and inexpensive in construction and can be readily carried in the waistcoat'pocket or wherever else found desirable.
The invention together with its numerous objects and advantages will be best under stood from a study of the following de-' scription, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein;
Figure 1 is a perspective viewof the device, the same being shown held in the hand preparatory to extinguishing the cigarette.
Figure 2 is a sectional view therethrough illustrating the manner of use. I
\Vith reference more in detail to the drawing -it will be seen that 5 designates a substantially cylindrical casing open at one end. A cover 6 is provided for the open end of the casing and has threaded engagement therewith. The flange of the cover on its outer side ispreferably knurled to facilitate securing of the cover on to said end ofthe casing 5. At its relatively opposite end the casing 5 is provided with an opening 7 through which projects the closed end of a substantially hollow cylindrical plunger 8 which at its open inner end is flared outwardly and sharpened to provide a knife ed e 9.
adjacent the open end thereof the caslng 5 is provided with an o ening 10 through which the lit end-of a cigarette 11 may be the plunger 8.
In actual practice, the extinguisher may introduced intothe casing 5 in the path of 1932. Serial No. 596,109.
Subsequently by pressure of the thumb, the plunger 8 is shifted inwardly of the casing 5 so that the knife edge 9 engages the lit end of the cigarette and severs'or removes said end in a manner thought apparent. It will also be noted, that the severed end of the cigarette will fall into the casing 5'so that the latter serves as a container or receptacle for the ashes.
The cover 6 may be readily removed for cleaning purposes. In view of the simplicity of the device it is thought that a clear understanding thereof will be had from the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and a more detail description therefor is deemed'unnecessary.
While I have herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that I do not wish to limit myself to the precise details of construction, combination and arrangement of elements as herein shown, and accordingly claim all such forms of theinvention towhich I am entitled in view of the requirement of the prior art and the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
1. Acigar'ette extinguisher comprising a pair of telescoping members the outer one of which is provided with a lateral opening,
and the inner one of which is provided with a circular cutting edge at its inner end.
- 2. A cigarette extinguisher comprising a cylindrical casing, a can threadedly engaged with one end of the casing, said casing at the end thereof remote from said cap being provided with an opening, a plunger arranged to reciprocate within the casing and having a flared inner end sharpened to provide a circular knife edge, and said casing intermediate its ends being provided with a.lateral opening closed by said plunger.
- 2.In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
FRANK WILLIAM BURNS.
