This invention relates to sewing machines of the type having laterally vibrating stitchforming mechanism adapted for the formation of zigzag stitches and has for one of its objects to provide improved means for vibrating the loop-taker in unison with the needle in such a manner as to maintain a fixed working relation between the loop-taker and the needle at all times. l
Another object of this invention is to providemore room under the gooseneck of the machine so that there will be ample space for the accommodation of the work.
Another object of this invention is to'provide an improved coupling between the looptaker actuating shaft and the loop-taker.
Vith the above and other objects in view, as will hereinafter appear, the invention consists in the devices, combinations, and arrangements of parts hereinafter set forth and illustrated in the accompanying drawings of a preferred embodiment of the invention, from which the several features of the invention and the advantages attained thereby will be readily understood by those skilled in the art.

In the embodiment of this invention selected for illustration, the machine is formed with a frame having a bed 1, an upright member or standard 2 and overhanging arm 3 terminating in the head 4.
Pivo-tally mounted on a stud 5 fixed to the head 4 is an oscillatory needle-bar-carrier 6 having upper and lower bearings, 7 .and 8, respectively, in which the reciprocating needle-bar 9 carrying the needle 10 is j ournaled.
The headV of the overhanging arm'is prop vided with bosses 19 apertured to receive the presser-bar 20,' the latter carrying the presserfoot 21 and being provided with la clamparm 22 havingv an inclined upward extension22 which receives the pressure of flat spring 23, the latter acting to lower the presser-foot upon the material when' the presser-bar'is released by the usual lifting lever24. Carried by the head of the machine isy an automatic presser-footflifter comprising a short shaft 25 extending through anV aperture inthe head 4 of the machinev and adapted to be moved axially therein. Fixed to one end of thefshaft 25 isa lever 27, actuated by a pinl 34 secured to the levervj14; and iixed to the other end of the shaft 25 is a lever 26 offset' so that its end'26 extends -under Vthe Vclamp-arm 22'which isprovided with an adjustment screw 32 ,engaged by said end 26. Secured tothe guide-post 28jby means of a set-screw 29 is a block 30 :having a springpressed plunger 31 which is forced down by the rounded edge 33 of the lever end 26f when the automatic presser-foot lifter Vis 'shifted from linactive to active position. When the operator wishes to use the automatic presserfoot lifter, pressure is applied to the hubv looper-carrier block 40 slidably held between the plates 41 and 42 fixed to the bed of the machine. Secured at one end in a. guideway in the looper-carrierby the screw 43 (see Fig. is a needle-throat member 44 formed at'its free'end with a needle-aperture 45.

The other end of the lever 64 is fixed to the shaft .65 which-is journaled in and extends through the boss 66 made integralwith the base l. Fixed tothe end of the shaft 65 extending through and protruding from the boss 66 is a lever 67 having an elongated slot 68.V Adjustably secured in the elongated slot 53of the member 52 is a block 69 and a stud-bolt 70 the end of which extends into the slot 68 of the lever 67 where it is received by the square nut 7l slidable in the slot 68. A washer 7 2 is provided to separate the member 52 from the lever 67. This assembly permits the side-throw of the needle-bar carrier and looper-ca-rrier to be varied.
The cam-race 62 is soshaped as to vibrate the needle and looper laterally of the line of feed and hold them in theirextreme positions while the needle is penetrating the work and presenting its loop to the looptaker; the late-ral shift being effected while the needle is out of the work.
To further support the looper-carrier so that it will move in the arc of a circle about the pivot 5, a channel 73 is provided in the side of the looper-carrier 40. The channel 73 is in the form of the arc of a circle; the radius being the distance between the center of the pivot 5 and the center of the channel. Carried by the plate 41 is a stud 74 with its end extending into the channel 73. The pin and channel together, forma supplemental support which insures the correct travel of the looper-carrier. lt is not essential that the looper-ca-rrier 40 be rigidly connected to the needle-bar carrier 6 so long as the loopercarrier 40 is mounted for movement about the axis of the needle-bar carrier supporting stud 5 as a center. Ttwillbe obvious that any other equivalent form of mechanism may be substituted for the stud and slot connection 73 and 74.

From the foregoing description considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, manner of operation and several advantages of my improvedsewing machinewill be clearly `and fully understood. It is apparent that such a device has a` wi de variety of uses, and it will be understood that the form, constructionv and arrangement of the several elements employed may be varied. Therefora the privilege is reserved of resorting tovall such legitimate changes thereinvas Vmay be fairly embodied within the spirit andscope of the appended claims.

In a sewing machine the combination of a pivoted needle-bar carrier, a pivoted loopercarrier, a looper having operative movements about an axis in said looper-carrier, and means for swinging said needle-bar carrier about its pivot and for swinging said loopercarrier about the same pivot in a direction longitudinally of said axis.
5. In a sewing` machine the combination of a fixed horizontal pivot, a needle-bar carrier and a looper-carrier swingably mounted on said pivot, and means for vibrating said needle-bar carrier and said looper-carrier in a vertical plane transverse to said pivot.
6. In a sewing machine the combination of a pivot, a needle-bar carrier and loopercarrier mounted to vibrate in a vertical plane about said pivot, andv means for vibrating said needle-bar carrier and said looper-carrier about said pivot.
7. In a sewing machine the combination of a. pivot, a needle-bar carrier pivoted thereto, a reciprocating needle journaled in said needle-bar carrier, a looper-carrier pivoted to and adapted to swing about said pivot, a looper having a shaft journaled in said looper-carrier, and means for swinging said needle-bar carrier and said looper-carrier in unison about said pivot and lengthwise of the looper-shaft.

A sewing machine having in combination, a needle-bar carrier swingable about a horizontal pivot, a looper-carrier also swingable about said pivot, a rigid member having one end fixed to said needle-bar carrier and the other end fixed to said loopercarrier, and means for vibrating said member in a vertical plane about said horizontal pivot.
