GEORGE n'rnonmcn, OF TWO RIVERS, wrscONsIN, ASSIGNOR r0 HAMILTON MANTLL FACTURING- COMPANY,0F 'rwo RIVERS, WISCONSIN, A CORPORATION or wIscONsrN DRAWING TABLE- Application filed April 20,
, This invention relates to drawing tables or the like.
Among other obj ects, the invention aims to provide a combined drawing table and desk which can be used simultaneously by two people, thus effecting a saving in floor space and which is at the same time simple and economical in construction.
Another object is to provide a drawing board which can be used either with a chair of ordinary height or with the usual stool or in standing position, and, to this end, the invention is inclusive of simple and easily operable means for adjusting the angle of the drawing board at will.
My improved and simplified drawing table desirably includes a desk and a drawing board pivotally mounted on the desk, the pivot point being in the region of an upper corner of the desk but spaced from the upper and vertical faces of the desk.
The invention may be understood by ref- Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Figure 1; and
Figure 4: is a section taken on the line 4-4L of Figure 1.
Referring in detail to the figures of the drawings, I have shown a base such as the desk 1 upon which a drawing board or the like 2 is pivotally mounted as at 3, at'each side vertical face of the desk.
The desk 1 is desirably provided in its front vertical face (Figure 2) with drawers such as are shown for illustration at 1 and 5, room being left under the drawers for the knees of a person working at the front vertical face of the desk, to whom the upper face 6 of the desk is available in most angular positions of the drawing board 2.
As here shown, the drawing board 2 is mounted on the desk 1 through the interme- 1931. Serial No. 531,457.
diation of metal brackets 7 engaging the desk at each side vertical face at the pivot point The board 2faces away from the desk,
Each bracket 7 is desirably inclusiveof a the pivot arm and substantially parallel with the supporting arm 8- is an auxiliary pivot arm .11. 1 V
Connecting the extremities of the arms 10 and 11, the bracket is provided with an arcuate member 12 which is slotted asat 13, the slot being concentric with the pivot point 3. The arms 10 and 11 and the arcuate member 12 definea' ninety degree sector of'a circle or quadrant, one of the radii defining the quadrant being perpendicular to the board 2 and the other radius beingparallel to the board. In this instance a brace 14 connects one extremity of the arm 8 and the mid-portion of the arcuate member 12., i
with thearcuate member 12 to lock the board 2 at any desired angle with respect-to the desk 1. In the illustrative constructiomthe desk is providedwith a clamp screw 15 which has a reduced portion 16 that passes through "the'slot 13 and screws into and out of a. suitable bearing 17 fixed to the desk round the reduced portion 16gof the clamp screw 15, one of the washersbeing between other washer being between thearcuate member 12 and a shoulder formedon the clamp T butsecurely locked in any desired angular positionwith respect to the; desk 1, the lot Clamping means are provided to cooperate Washers 18, which maybe ofrnetal, sur- #99 the arcuatemember 12 and thegdesk 1 and the v15 inwardly, theboard 2 may be frictionally 13 affording a range of movement of the board in standing position of the draftsman, I have located the pivot point 3 of the bracket 7 so that the pivot is in theregion of the upper corner 20 of the desk 1 but is spaced from theupper face 6 of the desk and from the rear vertical face 21 of the desk. The pivot point 3 is desirably nearer to the upper horizontal face 6 of the desk than it is to the rear vertical-face'21. Obviously when the board is in horizontal position, it is spaced farther from the desk than when it is in vertical position. Also as clearly shown in the drawings,-the bracket 7 is off-center of the board 2 toward the lower edge of the board. This arrangement effects an appropriate height for the drawing-board when horizontal or when approaching the horizontal and at the sametime, in most angular positions of the board, does not interfere with use of the face '6 of the desk by one who is seated at'the front vertical face ofthe desk. On the other hand, the drawing board may be simultaneously used by another person and in vertical or rear vertical position the board is relatively close to but spaced from the desk 1. Thus two working surfaces (the board 2 and'the upper desk face 6) are provided which maybe used simultaneously by two different persons and material economy infloor space since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable inthe statement of the invention and the above description.
Itwill be apparent that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangements of parts may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed.
Having described one embodiment of my invention, I claim:
1. In a device of the class "described, a
with a desk; of a bracket comprising right angularly related pivot arms pivoted to the desk on an axis passing through the desk in the region of an upper corner thereof but spaced inwardly from both the faces of the desk; an arcuate member connecting said pivot arms, sa-id' arcuate member having a substantially ninety degree slot therein concentric with said axis; an enlongated supporting arm integral with said bracket and extending to one side thereof, said arm being parallel to one of said pivot arms; a drawing board as'large in area as the top of the desk mounted on said supporting arm to cause the bracket to be'off-center of the board toward the lower edge thereof; and a clamping screw paslsgng through said slot and engaging the es I In witness whereof, I hereunto-subscribe my name.
