Description

May 2, 1933. P. K. MADISON ET AL BASKET OR SIMILAR CONTAINER Filed June 25, 1931 l I PA attommqd.
Patented May 2, 1933 res FFICE PETER K. IMADISON, OF DAK HARBOR, AND RALPH D. SMITH, OF HELENA, OI-IIQ BASKET OR SIMILAR CONTAINER Application filed June 23,
This invention relates to containers, and particularly to those of the basket type, and has for its object the provision of a light, strong and inexpensive article of this char.-
acterwhich is formed of a single-piece body bla-nk of stiii straw-board, or other suitable material, and has its ends so fashioned and interconnected with the sides as to produce a strong and durable end construction.
The invention is fully described in the following specification, and while it is capable of'embodiment in numerous forms, two embodiments only thereof are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in Which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a basket embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a reduced plan of the body blank from which said basket is made. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of another form of basket embodying the invention, and Fig.4 is a reduced plan of the body blank from which it is made.
Referring tothe body blank shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing, 1 designates the central panel thereof of suitable shape to form the bottom of a basket, and at each side of this panel are wings or extension members 2 adapted when bent up with respect to the center panel to form the corresponding sides of the basket. At each end of the center panel at is provided an extension member 3 adapted, when bent up with respect to the panel, to form the corresponding end of the basket.
In order to retain the side and end extensions 2 and 3 in bent-up basket-forming position, and to reinforce such ends against collapsing under pressure, each side extension 2 is provided at each end thereof with a pair of longitudinally extending laterally spaced strips or fingers 4 and 5, the former being to disposed at the outer edge of the side extension and the latter substantially midway between the inner and outer edges thereof.
When the blank is folded in basket-forming position, the fingers 4 projecting from the same ends of opposing side members 2 1931. Serial No. 546,300.

suitable securing mean-s.
The fingers 5 at the same end of the basket are connected in lapping relation at the outer side of the respective end member 3 and secured together and to the end member by 55.
nails 8, or in any other suitable manner.
An edge binding strip 9 is then secured around. the outer u aper marginal edge of the basket and secured to the side and end members 2 and 3 by nailing, or in any other suitable manner. In the presentinstance, this strip comprises two pieces which have their ends lapped and secured together at the ends of the basket and in opposition to the lapped end fingers 4 at the respective end, 5
thus materially adding to the strength and rigidity of the end portions of the basket. Strips 10 are secured along the inner upper edges of the side members 2 of the basket in any suitable manner, as by nailing, and serve to bind the legs of the bail member 11 to the basket sides, as well understood in the art. The strips 9 and 10 and hail or handle member 11 of the basket are preferably. composed of the same material as the body blank from 7 which the basket is formed, but may, if de-- sired, be formed of any other suitable material. i
The basket shown in Fig. 3 issubstantially the same as that shown in Fig. 1, except l that the ends of the basket, instead of being formed by a single end member 3, are composed of a plurality of extensions which interlace with suitable extensions formed on the ends of the side members 2 of the basket.
The body blank from which this basket is made comprises the bottom panel 12, the side panels or extensions 1813, and instead of the center or bottom panel being provided-- with a single end extension, it is provided with three longitudinally extending tongues or extensions 14 laterally spaced from each other and adapted, when the blank is folded,
to interlace with three extensions or tongues 5 on the corresponding end of each side member 13. The extensions 14 and the innermost two of the side extensions 15 are preferably of the same width to adapt them to be interlaced, as shown in Fig. 3, when the blank is folded to form a basket. The outermost tongue 15 of each side is lapped with the corresponding tongue of the opposite side at the inner side of the interlaced end construction of the basket, and there cured together and to such end construction the same as the fingers 4 of the form of basket shown in Fig. 1. The remaining end tongues 15 also lap with the corresponding end tongues of the opposite side, and serve to strengthen the sides against spreading at the ends thereof. The basket is equipped with an outer edge reinforcing strip 9. inner strips 10 and a bail or handle member 11, the same as in the other form of basket. It is apparent that in each case too has is composed of a single-piece body blank adapted to be formed of straw-board or other suitable material, and each end is composed of one or more members extending in up- 303 right position from the respective end of the bottom panel of the basket, while t ne sides are provided at their ends wlth pairs of extensions, with the members of each pair lapping each other across the end of the basket,
and one pair disposed at the inner marginal upper edge of the respective end. whil one or more of the other pairs are lapped and united across the end members at the outer side thereof, thus providing an effectual means for tying the ends of the side members of the basket together and reinforc ng the end members of the basket at both tl inner and outer sides thereof.
It is apparent that either form of basket may be easily, cheaply and quickly made,
and that it produces an end construction which is particularly strong and rigid to withstand collapsing stresses.
We wish it understood that our invention is not limited to any specific construction, arrangement or form of the parts, as it is capable of various modifications and changes without departing from the spirit of the claims.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. A container of the type set forth including a single blank having a bottom, side and end members extending upwardly from said bottom to form a body, each of the ends of the side members having tongues integral therewith and extending inwardly therefrom and engaged with the end members of the body and secured to the latter in overlapping relation, similar tongues integral with the ends of the sides of the body and engaged with the ends of the body and disposed adjacent to the top of the body so as to have their upper edges lie substantially flush with the upper edges of the ends, a binding member engaged with the sides and in register with the last named tongues, and means to secure the binding member to the sides and to the last named tongues and to the ends.
2. A container of the type set forth including a single blank having a bottom, side and end members extending upwardly from said bottom to form a body, each of the ends of the side members having tongues integral therewith and extending inwardly therefrom and engaged with the end members of the body and secured to the latter in overlapping relation, similar tongues integral with the sides of the body and engaged with the inner side faces of the ends of the body and disposed adjacent to the top of the body so as to have their upper edges lie substantially flush with. the upper edgesof the ends, a binding member engaged with the sides and with the outer side faces of the ends and being in register with each of the last named tongues, and means to secure the binding member to the outer side faces of the ends of the body and to each of the tongues.
A container of the type set forth includ ing a single blank having a bottom, side and end members extending upwardly from said bottom to form a body, each of the ends of the side members having tongues integral therewith and extending inwardly therefrom and engaged with the outer side faces of the end members of the body and secured to the latter in overlapping relation, similar the sides and in register with the last named tongues, and means to secure the binding member to the sides and to the last named tongues and to the ends.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto signed our names to this specification.
