Description

Patented Apr. 25, 1933 PATENT OFFICE ALBERT E. LOW, 01
D NVER, COLORADO CIGARETTE No Drawing.
This invention relates to an improved cigarette and the method of manufacturing the same.
One object of this invention is to produce 5 a cigarette rolled in paper that has been treated or impregnated in such a manner as to prevent the flaking of the paper when burned.
Another object of this invention is to provide a method of manufacturing cigarettes that shall cause the cigarette ash of the wrap er to fuse or sinter in such a manner as to orm a sheath about the tobacco ash.
A further object of this invention is to produce a cigarette that will extinguish itself when discarded.
' I have discovered that the constant droppin of fine ashes from a cigarette is due entireI y to the burning of the paper wrapper, and I have found by experiment if the paper wrapper is treated or impregnated with certain substance, the ash will not" flake and drop as is the case in every cigarette known to me, but will fuse or sinter and form a sheath around the tobacco ash. While there maybe many substances which'may accomplish the purpose of this invention, among those which I have found will accomplish said pur e without detriment to the smoking qua ity of the cigarette is a soluble silicate having a fixed alkali base such as a very diluted solution of sodium silicate. Such a substance renders the paper more or less impermeable which causes the gaseous products of combustion to be largely retained within 3 the enveloping sheath and when the entrance of the air induced by the suction of smoking is discontinued, the inert gases of the combustion soon extinguish the ci arette.

the'user, and the danger of fire is practically eliminated. i
In carrying out the above method, the cigarette wrappers are treated with a substance of a nature and in the manner above indicated, preferably with sodium silicate, and thereafter rolling the tobacco in the treated or impregnated wrapper. However, it is to be expressly understood that the cigarette wrapper may be treated subsequent to the forming of the cigarette. Other changes, modifications, substitutions, additions and omissions may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a cigarette having its wrapper impregnated with a soluble silicate having a fixed alkali base.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a cigarette having its wrapper impregnated with sodium silicate.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
ALBERT H. LOW.
