Description
April 18, 1933. A. E. COFRIN METHOD OF SMOOTHING STOCK ON FOURDRINIER WIRE Filed March 25, 1931 w] 0 I w .m
Patented Apr. 18, 1933 UNITED STATES AUSTIN E. 00m, 01 GREEN BAY, WISCONSIN much or siroo'rnnm s'roc r on rounniwmn Application mu m at, m1. s m n. man.
The invention relates to paper making machines of the Fourdrinier type and has as an object the provision of means to form an even layer of stock upon the wire whereby to improve the sheet.
It is a further object of the invention to provide means to smooth out ripples 1n the stock closely. adjacent the breast roll of the. machine, or at any other location that might be made desirable to smooth out the ripples in the stock. 7
It is a further object of the invention to provide asmoothing roll in contact with the surface of the layer of the stock upon the wire placed closely adjacent the breast roll for the purpose of smoothing out ripples in the stock.
Further objects of the invention will appear from the following description when read'in connection withthe accompanying drawing showing an illustrative embodiment of the invention and wherein V Fig. '1' is a central vertical section, parts beingrshown in elevation; and
ig. 2 is a detail side elevation of driving means for the roll showing portions of the machine in section. As shown the device comprises a vat for stock as at 10, a breast roll 11 having a Fourdrinier wire 12 running thereabout and sup ported by conventional tube rolls at 13.. A deckle pulley is shown at 14 and a deckle strap at 15.
The described portions of the Fourdrinier machine are conventional.
To accomplish the objects of the invention there is shown a smooth surfaced roll 16, which may be hollow if desired for lightness, which as shown is mounted in bearin 17 at the o posite sides of the wire, and which roll ma positively driven by beveled gears 18 an drive shaft 19. v
The objects of the invention may be secured by driving the roll either in the direction of the wire at a speed greater than the wire or in a reverse direction, that is, counter to the wire, so as to produce a still greater variation between the relative speeds of the wire and the roll. 'When the roll is driven counter to the wire, it is preferred to provide a small doctor plate or scraper as indicated at 20 which will strip the water from the surface of the roll 16 and prevent it from adhering to the surface of the roll to be thrown by centrifugal force down upon the sheet upon the side thereof toward the dry end of the machine, which action would damage the forming sheet.
By use of the invention it is found that the ripples which are always present adjacent the breast roll, until they have time to flow laterally and smooth out, are immediately smoothed out so that the sheet may begin to form uniformly across its width and a t in sheet of tissue paper may thus be produced which is much more uniform in quali Minor changes may be 'made in the mvention within the scope of the appended claims 7 without departing from the spirit thereof.
I claim: 1. The process of smoothing the surface of stock upon a Fourdrinier wire which comprises plaoinga smooth surfaced roll to dip into the layer of stock and causing the roll to revolve in a direction and at a speed to provide relative motion between the surface of the roll and the layer of stock.
2. The process of smoothing the surface of stock upon a F ourdrinier wire which comprises placing a smooth surfaced roll to di into the layer of stockand causing the r0 to revolve in a direction counter to the direction of movement of the layer of stock.
In testimony whereof I aflix m signature.
AUSTIN E. OFRIN.
