Description

"April 18, 1933. l. WEINBERG 1,904,588
CURTAIN ROD Filed Nov. 6, 1931- INVE OR m NT Patented Apr. 18, 1933 @UNITED STATES ISIDOR WEINBERG, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK CURTAIN non Application led November 6, 1931. Serial No. 573,416.
This invention relates to improvements in curtain fixtures particularly in fixtures in which the left and right hand parts of a curtain suspended from the iixture by means of slides or runners, are drawn together or moved apart, by the operation of a pull cord, and it is the principal object of my invention to provide a fixture the telescoping members of which carry master slides attached to the pull cord which at all times are centrally located to said members which are substantially U-shaped in cross-section and have a rounded apex while the lower ends of the U-shanks are inwardly and upwardly bent 15 to form guides in which the members are guided during their telescoping displacement to one another.
Another object of my invention is the provision of double duty brackets at the outerv '-20 ends of the end members of the lixture to allow the attachment of the fixture by one part of the double duty bracket either between the inner oppositely disposedfaces of a'window sash or the like, or to permit the attachment of the fixture by means of the other part of said double duty bracket to the side faces of a window sash or the like.
Still another object of my invention is the provision of a curtain fixture the pull cord of which is guided over suitablyarranged `inner sheaves in such a manner as to allow the pulling apart of the curtain parts by a pull at one end of the cord or the drawing together of the parts of the curtain by a pull at the other cord end.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a plurality of slides or runners from which the parts of a curtain are suspended including centrally located master slides adapted to be pulled apart or drawn together on the central or main member by a pull on the cord and sliding on a seat formed by the inwardly and upwardly bent ends of the fixture members. A
the provision of a curtain fixture the draw or pull cord of which is reentrantly guided over sheaves and secured intermediate its ends to the centrally located slides' for the curtain, and a ixture which is comparatively simple and inexpensive in construction, yet durable and highly eiicient in operation.
Other objects and advantages vof my invention will become more fully known as the description thereot1 proceeds, and will then be specifically deined in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of an extension curtain rod constructed according to my inventlon.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. 1

Fig. 5 is a cross-section on line 5--5 of Figure 3.

Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a double end bracket.
Fig. 8 is a diagrammatic detail view of the. draw cord arrangement.
As illustrated, the curtain rod or fixture according to my invention consists of a central or main section 10 and two sections 11 and 12 telesooping endwse into said main section.
Each section consists of a body part substantially U-shaped in cross section having a rounded apex and parallel downwardly directed spaced shanks the lower ends of which are inwardly and upwardly bent, as indicated at 13 and 14, the bends of the main section forming a guide for the bends of the end sections vslidably held therein during the telescoping operation and forming a seat for the upper bar or head 15 of the 'slideslf` and master slides 16,'16Q` having each a web 90 17 connecting the head to the foot of the slides 16 and master slides 16, 16', bent angularly to form a depending member 18 perforated at 19 to allow the passage of the fastening or suspending means of the curtain.
The apex of member 12 is slotted, as at 20, to permit the telescoping of member 12 into the main section.
The outer ends of the end sections 11 and 12 are equipped with double duty brackets. one part of each bracket composed of a plate 23 and endv plate 24 angulary disposed thereto and perforated, as at 25, to lallowthe,.passage of the fastening means by which the vfixture is to be secured to the inner faces 'of a window frame, while bracket23 integral with plate 24 and angularly disposed thereto has perforation 26 to allow the passage of fastening means securing the bracket to theK end memA p ber 12, and perforation 21 fro'mwhich the outer ends of the curtain are suspended- Integrally formedv with plateA 24 and angul'arly disposedthereto is the other part ofthe double"'duty'bracket composed-of a substantially U-shaped body part or plate 27 connected by vmeans of a web 28 to plate 23 and having the upper and lower ends of the U-v shanks angularly bent to form upper and lower lianges 28, 29, provided Wit-h openings 36, 31', allowing the passage ofthe fastening means to secure the bracket vmember 27'to the-outer faces of a window-frame.
A sheave or small pulleyfwheel 32 isfrotatably mounted von a pin 33 near the outer end of the right handsection between the walls of member 11 and one end of a pull cord 34 is guided-'over the sheave and has secured thereto master slide 16 by means 'of a screw 35. The cord 34 is then guided Vover a sheave 36 secured by means of a pin 37 to al U-.plate or yoke 3S attached to the apex of member 10 by means of screw 22. f
The cord is then reentrantly guided over a pulleyor sheave 39 on pin 40 near the inner 'f enfd of the left hand end section of the rod and from this sheave cord 34 is guided over a sheave 41 on pin 42 near the outer'end'of the left'hand'se'ction between'the vwalls of member 12. From sheave 41 cord 34 is guid- -f ed over a small roller 43 on pin 44 in a member 45 secured in member 12. At a distance from roller v43 vcord 34 vis attached by means of screw 44 to master slide 16 and finally guided over a pulley or sheave 46 on pin 47 inward of and somewhat below sheave V32 and has its end 48 suspended for the attachment of a suitable weight. A similar weight is attached to end 34 of the cord.
, InY operation, the fixture is adjusted to its 5 proper length by the telescopic adjustment of in plate' 24er by means .of screws or the like` passed through the openings 30, 31, of bracket member 27, if the fixture is to be attached to the front face of a window' sash or the like. ln adjusting the fixture to a given length, the end members should each be lengthened or shortened equally relative to the main member. lt will be apparent, that by such adjustment, the master slides governing the movements of the curtain, will at all times be centrally located 'on the rod, due to the prescribed arrangement of sheaves, provided by the present invention.
The curtain .is/.suspended from -the slides 16 and master slides 16, 16', by hooks, pins, or the like, passed through the openings 19. 1f Vnew -a pull-v is exerted-011 end 34 of the pull cord, the master slides 16, 16', from which the inner ends of the curtain are suspended will distance the ends of the curtain to any desired degreeto provide an opening while a pullon end 48 will approachthe curtain ends towards Vthe center so as lto overlap and close the curtain and closethe opening. Y. j Y 4 lt will be understood that I have described and shown'the preferred form of my device only as one example ofthe many possible ways to practicallyv construct the same, and that l may make such changes in the general arrangement thereof and inthe construction of its minor details as come within the scope ofthe appended' claims without departure from the-'spiritof my invention and the prinf ciples invo-lved. f Y l -iHavin'g thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: n Y;
