Patented Mar. 21, 1933 I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CLIFFORD NORTON, OF SOUTH ORANGE, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOREY MESNE ASSIGN- MENTS, TO OTIS ELEVATOR COI/IPANY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY MECHANISM FOR OPERATING ELEVATOR DOORS Application filed August 31, 1927. Serial No. 216,588.
This invention relates to improvements in controlling mechanism for simultaneously controllin elevator car doors and landing doors.
It is among the primary objects of the invention to provide a rugged construction in which the parts are adequately supported either on the elevator car or on the wall of the shaft.
One primary object of the invention is to make use of one power motor with separate actuating mechanisms for transmitting power from the motor to the car door and landing doors respectively so that when desired one of the doors may be caused to open or close in advance of the other.
Another of the main objects of the present invention is to provide separate power-operated mechanisms for the car gate or door and for the landing gates or doors by which they will be held in either open or closed position until they are positively moved by the power means, the preferred constructionineluding an irreversible power-transmitting mechanism for maintaining the doors in-such positions.
' It is a further object of the invention to provide an apparatus which is superior in its operation to those previously constructed due to the use of a transmitting mechanism constructed to cause the initial and final movements of the door to be relatively slow whereas all movements of the doors in the-inter; mediate stages will be at relatively high It is a still further object to provide door or gate moving mechanism which is preferably moved by power but which, when'desired, may be disconnected from the power mechanism and moved by hand.
The combined car gate and landing door operating mechanism of my invention com prises in its preferable form an organization the principal parts of which are as follows:
An electric motor mounted on the car in any suitable position drives, preferably through an irreversible gear, a suitable shaft. Flexible members or chains two in number at least are suitably connected at one end of by rotation in one direction of the shaft the chains, cords or similar device will be wound up or shortened, While rotation of the shaft by rotation of the motor in the opposite direction will extend. or lengthen said cords or chains. The car gate on the car is provided with an operating mechanism embodying as one of its members a device preferably in the form of a lever of hell crank form havingsone arm engaged with the gate or an operating member thereof and having its other arm con nected with one end of one of'said cords 01' chains. Also mounted on the car is an actu-- ating member adapted when the car is at the lan ding to engage and move landing door operating mechanism of any suitable char-- acter, a member of which is in position to beengaged by said actuating member. Said. member of the landing door operating devices is preferably in the form of a bell crank one arm of which is engaged or adapted to be engaged by the actuating member on the car while the other arm is tied to devices for moving the landing door. The actuating member on the car through which power is applied to move the landing door is suitably connected with one end ofthe-other of the two cords or chains the other end of which is wound up or released by rotation of the shaft, and said actuating member preferably comprises'a cam member adapted to be projected or moved when the car is'at the landing by the operation of the cord or chain attached to it. Whenso projected or moved it engages the member of the door operating mechanism fixed inposition upon the landing to be so engaged when t ie car is at the landing. Springs may be applied to produce a closing movement of the gate and door when'the motor is reversed to slac'lren the cords or chains. The irreversible gear in the driving connections of the motor holds the parts in position when the power is turned off. A cam or drum specially shaped to give an-increased accelerating and decelerating move ment to the door, and gate at certain stages and upon which the chains or cords are wound also forms a part ofthe apparatus in its preferred construction. Suitable circuit each chain to said shaft in such manner that closing or controlling means for controlling ice the motor form of necessity a part of the apparatus which also embodies other parts and devices as more particularly hereinafter described.
The invention consists in the combinations of devices and constructions of apparatus as hereinafter more particularly described and claimed whereby the above and other objects are secured.

F 13 is a diagrammatic illustration of the electric circuits employed.
In prior door operating devices it has been proposed to move both the car door and landing door by using the same actuating mechanism for both, the car door and landing door being interengaged, usually by means of a channel and pin, so that they are moved to gether. These devices are objectionable because the interengaging parts cannot-be adequately supported, tending to become loose and noisy, and also because the doors must always be moved entirely simultaneously. It is proposed to overcome all the objectionable features in such prior devices by means of the mechanism described and claimed herein. 7
According to the present invention it is proposed to mount amotor directly upon the elevator car and from this one motor to move the car door or gate and the corresponding landin door or gate near which the elevator has been stopped. To this end the elevator car 14 is providedwith an electric motor 16 mounted upon the superstructure 18 of the elevator. 7
The motor 16 has separate connections for operating the car gate 20 and any one of the landing gates 22. A driving shaft 23, 24 operated by the motor is provided with any desired type of universal connection 25 for rotating the worm gear 26. This gear meshes with the worm nut 28 mounted in housing 29 and supported on the shaft section 30 connected through the clutch mechanism 32 with the transverse driving shaft 34.
'The motor 16 is provided with a usual brake mechanism 36 for slowing down the rotation of the motor after the supply of electric current has been cut off. The brake mechanism 36 includes the friction brake bands 38 normally pressed into engagement with the rotatable brake drum 39 by means of the coil springs 40. The brakes are released from the brake drum by means of the brake release arm 42 operatively connected with the solenoid 44 energized and (lo-energized with the energization or de-energization of the motor 16, as will be explained more fully below in connection with Fig. 13. The elevator car gate 20 in. the present instance is shown as of the collapsible type suitably supported by rollers upon the track 4:8 carried by the elevator car. While this type of gate is preferred it will be understood that any usual or preferred type of car gate or door may be employed and that the term gate herein used for convenience is intended to indicate any type of door or gate which is desired.
The operating mechanism for moving the gate 20 comprises in the present instance an elongated lever 50 pivoted upon the elevator superstructure as indicated at 52. This lever is formed with or has secured thereto angular extensions 53 and 54, the former being connected to the dashpot 55 and the latter being connected by means of a flexible chain or the like, 56, with an eccentric drum 58 carried by the main operating shaft 34. The flexible member 56 is secured to the drum member 58 at a point 60 close to the axis of rotation of the drum. It will be understood that the shaft 34 and drum 58 will rotate in a counter-clockwise direction as viewed in Fig. 3 for the purpose of opening the door thus causing the chain 56 to be moved slowly at first, then with increasing speed until the extended portion of the cam 58 has passed beyond the axis of the shaft 34, after which the speed of movement of the flexible element 56 and gate 20 will be decreased up to the point of the open gate position of the cam, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3.
It is desired to have the car gate close under power other than that supplied by the motor 16, for example spring power, and
to this end there is provided a relatively either manually or by power.
the lug carried by the shaft'52. Rotation of the arm 66 in a clockwise direction as viewed in Fig. 9, will accordingly cause: the lug 68 to engage the lug 70 and rotate the shaft 52 in a clockwise direction, under the influence of the spring 62, to close the door. The arm 66 is free, however, to be moved in the opposite direction without affecting the position of the shaft 52, the lugs parting as indicated in Fig. 10.
A cylindrical hub portion of the lever 66 is also preferably formed with a radial pro jection 72-constructed to be engaged by the pivoted latch 7 4 formed with a retaining lug 7 5 for retaining the lever 66 in the position it assumes when the door is substantially in its open position. The latch 74 and lug 72 thus constitute, when operated, a mechanism for preventing the spring 62 from functioning to close the gate 20. The latch '74 is desirably operated simultaneously with the clutch mechanism 32 and, is accordingly formed with an extension 7 6 en gageable with a portion of the clutch operating mechanism as appears more fully below. V
The landing doors 22 may be of any desired construction, those illustrated herein being of the usual three unit sliding type supported upon suitable hangers mounted in the elevator shaft. The doors 22 are shown as operated by means of the toggle levers 78,7865,
7811 which are capable of being operated The power operating mechanism includes a bell crank lever '80 pivoted in the elevator shaft and connected by means of links 81 and82 to a. bracket 79 mounted on one of the toggle levers 78a as indicated at 84. The adjacent ends of the links 81 and 82 are shown as supported by means of a lever 85 pivoted to a suitable support in the elevator shaft, one end of the lever 85 operatively connecting, through the-piston rod 86, with the dashpot checking mechanism 88 of any preferred con-' struction for checking the opening movement of the door.
Since it is preferred toclose the door by means of spring mechanism this may be accomplished by means of the compression spring 90 mounted within the spring casing 92 pivotally supported in the elevator shaft, the rod 93 of the spring mechanism being pivotally connected to the toggle link 78a as indicated at 94. The lower portion of the spring casing 92 is formed as a dashpot mech anism for checking the closing movement of the door under the influence of the spring 90.
There is also preferably employed any usual type of interlock-switch as indicated diagrammatically at 95 which interlock 'coacts with the toggle links 78 to open the hoisting motor controlling circuit when the toggle links are in anyexcepttheir locked position as shown in full lines in Fig. 5.
The interlock switch disclosed i's'of the type disclosed and claimedin my prior Patent No. 1,562,183, patented :Nov. 17, 1925.
The power actuating mechanism for the doors 22, in particular the bell crank lever.
80 thereof, (see Fig. 2) may be actuated by means of'the cam member'96 movably supported upon" the frame of the elevator car by means of the links 98 and actuated by means of the flexible member 102. The flexible member 102, after passing over the pulley 103, extends to and is securedtothe eccentric drum 100 which is securely fastened on the transverse power operated shaft 34 for rota-- tion therewith. The flexible member 102 is attached to this drum at a point l0 1'near the its closing movements under the influence of its closingspring.
The clutch member 32 is provided for the purpose of freeing the power shaft section 30 from the main operating shaft 3 1 and cams 58 and100. ,The clutch 32 is shown as op-- erated by-means of the foot pedal 106 connected with the lever 107 which in turn is connected with the flexible element 108 which, after passing over suitable guide pulleys, is attached through the rod 109 to the lever 110 pivotally mounted upon the frame of the car. The lever 110 is in turn connected to the link 111' pivoted to the clutch operating bellv crank lever 112 piv0tally supported upon the frame adjacent the clutch mechanism 32. The yoke portion 113 of the bell crank 112 is formed for engagement with the clutch collar 114 for moving the. clutch to-or from operative position. The clutch is normally held in engaged position by means of thetensionspring-116 as'shown for example in Fig. .4; The rod 109 is provided with an enlarged nut 1185adjustably mounted thereon and formed for engagement with the end 76 of the latch 74 so that, upon the operation of the clutch to release the same, the latch 7 4 is lowered into position to engage the lug 72 for the purpose described above.
It is desirable that the motor circuit be opened when the reached the end of its movement in either direction. To this end the shaft 34 is provided' withthe rotatable disk 120 securely fastened to this shaft and carrying adjustable plates 121 and 122 formed with projecting lugs 123and 124 respectively. Each of the lugs 123 and 124 is designed to be moved into engagement with one of the springpressed pivoted levers 125 and 126,for' opening the circuits of thecircuit breakers 127 and 128. Thesecircuit breakers'are identical in construction and include the movable condoor mechanism has I ductors129 and 130 normally-spring-pressed into engagement as seen at the righthand of Fig. 12 but separable by means of the insulating plate 132, as shown at the lefthand in Fig. 12. The plates 121 and 122 may be adjustably mounted upon the disk 120 and the supporting rods for the insulating plates 132 may he adjustablyconnected-to the levers 125 and 126 so as to accurately fix the time of opening the circuits with respect to the movement of the doors. It will be understood that one ofthe circuits,.forexample that indicated at 127a, controlling the door opening circuit for the'motor, will be opened when the door has reached substantially open position and that the other circuit,'for example 128a, will be opened whenthe door has reached. substantially closed position, the opening of these circuits being responsive to the rotation of the main operating shaft 34. Referring now to Fig. 13 whereinthere is disclosed a complete diagrammatic view of the electric conducting circuits which may be used in connection with this apparatus, the main power circuits for the hoisting motor and door controlling motor are indicated in heavy lines and the auxiliary circuits in lighter lines. Referring to the details of this figure, the hoisting motor 134 is normally controlled by means of the shiftable hoisting controller 135' as. is usual in elevator controls. The controller 135 is provided with conductors 136 and 137 capable of engagement with oneupper and one lower contact 138a, 1385, 1380and 138d. The conductors 136 and 137 are arranged in permanent conducting relation to the main power lines extending to and from the hoisting motor 134.
Current is supplied to the terminals 138?) and 138d through the main power lines a, b and leading from one power line, termed the positive for convenience. Current is supplied from the other or negative power line to the remaining terminals 138a and 1380 through the conductors d, e and It will thus be seen that movement of the hoisting controller 135 to the right or to the left causes the current to pass through the hoisting motor in either of two directions to move the elevator car either up or down as desired. The controller 135 is formed with projections 140 engageable with the conductor 142 for moving the latter into engagement with the conductor 143 when the controller is moved into either of itsoperative.
' ergize the relay 144 provided with an arma ture 144a carrying the conducting plates 145 and 146 capable of bridging either the upper terminals 147 or the lower terminals 148;
Current is supplied to the relay 144 through C the branchconductor 9 leading virom the main power line 7 through the relay 144, to the switch plate 143. The armature 144a may be returned to its lower or de-energized condition by gravity, assisted if desired by means of a spring.
It is often considered desirable to be able to close the doors in advance of the starting of the car. This may be accomplished by means of the auxiliary circuit m-which' forms a shunt around the automatic switch 142, 143. The circuit m may include a manual switch 141 and a floor operated switch 141a in circuit therewith closed in the usual manner when the elevator car is substantiallyat a landing. This circuit m will thus permit the doors to be closed through the actuation of the relay 144 at any time the car is even with a floor. V
The contacts 147 and 148 form parts of circuits leading respectively tothe door closing and door opening relays150 and 152 provided with armatures 153 and-.154 respectively. The armature 153 carries terminals 155 and 156 insulated from one another and from the armature and movable into engagement with the terminals 157 and 158 for the purpose of operating the door movingmotor 16a in one direction, r
The armature 153, when energized, also closes contacts 160 and 162 leading respectively to the electromagnet 164 and the brake. releasing relay 44a. The electromagnet 164 serves, when energized, to open the switch 170 to cause the current to pass through the resistance 172 so that upon the operation of the motor in a direction to permitthe door to close, the current supplied to the motor, will be considerably reduced as will be read ily understood. The relay 44a is provided for the purpose of releasingthe brake 36a from the door motor 16a, constructed as shown more particularly in Fig. 8.
The armature 154 carries contacts similar to 155 and 156 but reversed as to their positions so that when the relay152 is energized current is supplied to the motor 16a in the reverse direction so as to cause the doors or gates to be opened. The armature 154 carries with it the conductor 157 which closes the circuit to the relay 44a to release the door motor brake 36a.
- The armatures 154 and 156 are preferably connected for reverse movements as, for ex ample, by means of the lever 174. This lever may be normallymaintained in a neutral position with both armaturesin inoperative position by any desired means, for example the spring 176.
I The limit switches 127 and 128 are illustrated diagrammatically in Fig. 13 at 127a and 128a respectively, the same being shown as operated by the-rotary members 120arto' open the corresponding circuits when the; door has reached the limit of its movement in either direction;
It is believed the circuits to the various elements will bereadily understood from the above description without further elaboration, the functions of the various parts being further explained in connection with the following description of the operation of the mechanism.
The operation of the electric circuit controls for the mechanism herein disclosed may be briefly described as follows: In normal operation when the hoisting controller is moved to neutral, the relay 144 is de-energized thus permitting the armature 144a to descend. This energizes relay 152 and supplies electric current to the door moving motor 16 in a direction to open the door, zthe brake relay 44a being released to permit movement of the door moving motor. As the door reaches substantially open position the limit switch 127a is opened thus de-energizing the dooropening solenoid and permitting the motor 16 to come to rest. The door moving motor is energized for operating the same in the reverse direction upon the'movement of the controller 135 either to the, right or to the left, either of which movements would cause the contacts 147 to be bridged and the door closing relay 150 to be operated. The actuation of the relay 150 not only supplies electric current to the door moving motor 16a for moving the motor in a closing direction, but this relay 150 simultaneously actuates the electromagnet 164 to automati cally throw inthe resistance 172 and also actuates the relay 44a to release the motor brake. The limit switch 128a is actuated to open the circuit automatically when the door reaches substantially its closed position.
The operation of the mechanical door moving mechanism herein disclosed is as follows: Upon the actuation of the door moving motor 16 in a direction to rotate the main driving shaft 34 in a counter-clockwise direction, as viewed in Figs. 1 and 3, the door moving elements 56 and 102 are caused to be wound u on the respective drums 58 and 100. Due to tide diiferential shape of the drums 58 and 100 the car gate 20 and shaft door 22 are caused to move in an open direction slow- 1y at first, then with increased speed, and
finally at relatively slow speed, the final operations of both the opening and closing movements of the door preferably being checked by means of the dashpots as shown.
Both the car door or gate and landing door are caused to remain open due to the resistance inherent in the worm drive mechanism .used to operate the driving shaft 34. At this time the door closing springsr62 and are tensioned but are ineffective'to cause the closing of the doors. Upon the reversal of the door moving motor 16 to cause the same to move in a door closing direction, the springs 62 and 90 are permitted to become effective and both doors are closed under the influence 01' these springs, the motor 16 during this operation serving merely to reverse the rotation of the shaft 34 so as to permit the springs to be effective H Iffor any reason it is desired to move the car, gateor door or landing doors by hand this may be accomplished by depressing the foot lever 106 thus releasing the main shaft 34 from the driving motor by opening the clutch mechanism 32. The depressing of the, ,7
foot pedal 106 also releases the shaft'34 from the influence ofthe spring 62 after the car gate isin open position, since this operation causes the hook 74 to engageand-hold the hub supporting the arm 66 in an inoperative condition. r i I It will thus be seen that this invention provides complete separate. actuating mechanism which would fulfill some of the functions of .he cams 5 8 and 100. In other words the points of attachment of the chains of flexible members to the rotatable shaft may be such that these members will be wound upon the eccentric drum shown 'or on other drums which have constantly increasing radii or they might with some degree of satisfaction be secured to arms having substantially constant radii. Difieren; speeds of operation can thus be accomplished by'substituting different drums for either or both of the drums on the shaft'34. v I
