This invention relates generally tocabinets for typewriters of the portable type.

Among the objects of the invention is to provide a novel typewriter cabinet composed of. a base section to which the typewriter inay be secured and acover body section hinged to the base section by a novel formof hinge composed of readily separable sections enabling removal of the cover body section of the cabinet from the base section with great facility. Another object of the invention is to provide a hinge of the general character referred to in which is provided novel means for guiding the hinge sections again into cooperative relation when reassembling the base and coverbody sections or" the cabinet.

Another object of the invention is to provide a novel latch mechanism for releasably securing the hinge sections in cooperative relation. I e s WVith these and other objects in view which will more fully appear, the nature of the invention will be more clearly understood by following the description, the appended claims, and the several views illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

In the drawings in which like numerals of reference-indicate like parts in all ofthe figures, A generally designates the base sec tion of the cabinet, B the typewriter, G the base; hinge section, D the cabinet cover body section, and E the cover body hinge section. The'cabinet sections A andD are of more or less conventional form, and the typewriter B may be of any approved form, but the. hinge sections C and E are of novel construc tion and form the principal basis upon which patent protection is sought in this application. In order to secure a typewriter upon the base section securing dogsor levers .11 are pivotally mounted on the strips Sand are movable into engagement with suitable brackets 12 or frame depressions carried by the typewriter B; V (See Figure 5.) ,7

-As, above related, the cabinet base and cover sections are connected'by hinge sections C and E and these sections are so constructed that they are readily separable to permit removal of the cover section from the base section. The hinge section C includes a vertical body portion 13 which is secured by rivets 14 or other suitable securing devices to a flange of the base section. This sectionalso includes an angle-bent portion 15 overlying and extending outwardly beyond the flange. The eXtended angle-bent portion is split or divided as at 16in order to provide a rest and guide tongue 17 and a pintle roll 18 in which apintle 19 is secured. It will be observed by reference to the draw;

ings that the pintle 19 extends over the tongue 17 but terminates short of the end thereof. The purpose for this construction will become obvious as the description progresses.

At least one of the hinge sections C has a plate 20 secured thereto, preferably by the same rivets which secure the body 13 to the base flange, and this plate is extended upwardly beyond the hinge section body and shaped to provide two spaced pintle rolls 21 in which apintle 22 is secured. The pintle 22 extends beyond each roll 21 for the purpose of receivingthe'hinge rolls. 23 of a latch plate 24 which overlies the anglebent portion 15 and is equipped with a keeper cam latch lug 25, the purpose of which will be described.

The latch plate includes an extension 26 bent at a right angle so as to lie in a vertical plane and this extension is also bent to form a corner angle 27 and a depresser finger 28. It will also be observed that a coil spring 2') is coiled about the pintle 22 between the pintle rolls 21 and has its ends extended into engagement with the latch plate 24 and the plate 20 in a manner for yieldably holding the latch plate against the angle-bent portion 15 of the hinge section.

It will be observed that the hold- down devices 8, 10, 11. and 12 serve to secure the typewriter B upon the base section in such a manner that the corners of the typewriter are in spaced relation with the corners of the base section formed by the upstanding flanges thereof. 'It will be observed also that the corner angle 27 and the depresser finger 28 extending from the latch plate or positioned in one of these corner spaces so that the depresser finger may be conveniently engaged by a person seeking to release the hinge securing latch.

The cover body section D includes the cover body proper designated '30 and suitable side walls or flanges 31 so that when the cabinet sections Aand D are brought together the, typewriter B will be completely encased therein in the usual manner. The section D is also equipped with the usual spring lock hardware generally designated 32 and adaptedto cooperate with the hard ware 7 of the base section A, and a carrying handle 33'. i

The cover body hinge sections E, which are carried by the cover body section D, each includes a vertical body portion 34 secured by rivets or other securing devices 35 to a side wall of the cover body section.

depressing the finger28 the lug 25 may be raised and the cover body sectionD may then be moved to the right so as to withdraw the hinge-rolls 40 from the pintles- 19 and thus bring-about a separation of the base and body sections A and D. V

body sections A and D in cooperative relation with the hinge sections C and E cooperatively connected is illustrated in Figure 6. By reference to this figure it will be observed that when the cabinet sections A and Dare to be assembled the body section D may be positioned so as to rest the pintle receiving rolls 40 of the hinge section E upon the rest and guide tongues 17 .of the hingesection E, thus supporting the weight of the cover body section D. It should be understood that the latch lug 25 is bent slightly upward so as to form a sort of cam which may be automatically deflected by" engagement of a pintle receiving roll brought into engagement therewith by movement toward the left as viewed in the figure referred to." Thus, by now moving the cover body section D toward the left the pintle receiving rolls will he slid toward the left and the latch lug 25 will be displaced, permitting the hinge sections to move into cooperative relation. As soon as the assembly of the hinge section is completed the'latch lug 25 will snap down behind the pintle roll 40 and secure-the hinge sections against inadvertent separation. Thus assembled the base and body sections of the cabinet may be again separated only after depressing the finger 28 so as to'release the latch lug 25.

The vertical body portions of the hinge section C also may be provided with extensions 41 to fit the base section cornersand be-secured at 42 therein for reinforcing the corners and strengthening the hinge mount- From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it is thought that the novel details of cone structiomthe manner ofuse and the advantages of my invention will be readily apparent to those familiar with portable type writers and cabinets therefor.

I claim:

'1. A hinge comprising a base'section, and

a cover section, one section havinga hinge.

3. A hinge comprising a base section, and a cover section, one section having a hinge pintle, the other section having a pintle receiving roll to receive the pintle when the sections are moved to present the pintle and roll in coaxial relation and then relatively longitudinally to bring the pintle and roll in cooperative relation, one of said sections having a supporting and guiding extension for supporting the other section with the pintle and'roll of the sections in coaxial relation and for guiding the relative longitudinal movement serving to bring thepintle and roll into cooperative relation, and a manually releasable latch to secure the pintle and roll against separation.

4. A hinge comprising a base section, and a cover section, one sectionhaving a hinge pintle, the other section having a pintle receiving roll to receive the pintle when the sections are moved to present the pintle and roll in coaxial relation and then relatively longitudinally to bring the pintle and roll in cooperative relation, one of saidsections having a supporting and guiding extension 'for supporting the other section with the pintle and roll of the sections in coaxial re lation and for guiding the relative longitudinal movement serving to bring the pintle and roll into cooperative relation, and a manually releasable latch to secure the pintle and roll against separation and automatically displaceable during movement of the hinge sect-ions back into cooperative relation after they have been separated.

5. A hinge comprising a base section, and a cover section, one section having ahinge pintle, the other section having a pintle receiving roll to receive the pintle when the sections are moved to present the pintle and roll in coaxial relation and then relatively longitudinally to bring the pintle and roll in cooperative relation, one of said sections having a supporting and guiding extension for-supporting the other section with the pintle and roll of the sections. in coaxial relationand for guiding therelative longi+ tudinal movement'serving to bring the pintleand roll into cooperative relation, and a manually releasable latch overlying the supporting and guiding extensionand normally serving tosecurethe pintle and roll against separation.

6; Ahinge comprising a base section, and a cover sectio-n, one section having a hinge pintle, the other section havi'nga pintle receiving roll to receive the pintle when the sections are moved to present the pintle and roll in coaxial relation j and then relatively longitudinally to bring the pintleand roll in cooperative relation, one of said sections having a supporting and guiding extension for supporting the other section with the pintle and roll of the sections in coaxial relation and for guiding the relative longitudinal movement serving to bring the pintle and roll into cooperative relation, and a manually releasable latch overlying the supporting and guiding extension and normally serving to secure the pintle and roll against separation, said latch being automatically displaceable by movement of the pintle and roll into cooperative relation.

7 A hinge for separably connecting the cover and base sections of a typewriter or A other cabinet, said hinge comprising a base section, a cover section, means for separably connecting the hinge sections, and a manually releasable latch carried by one hinge section and engageable with the other hinge section to prevent separation of the hinge sections, said latch having a finger extension depressible for effecting release of the latch and angle bent to lie in a corner of acabinet section on which the hinge section may be mounted.

8. A hinge for separably connecting the cover and base sections of a typewriter or other cabinet, said hinge comprising a base section, a cover section, means for separably connecting the hinge sections, a manually releasable latch carried by one hinge section and engageable, with the other hinge section to prevent separation of the hinge-sections, said latch having a finger extension depressible for efiecting release of the latch and angle'bent to lie in a corner of a cabinet section on which the hinge section may be mounted, one of said hinge sections having an angled extension for engaging in and bracing a corner of a cabinet section on which the hinge section may be mounted, and serving to position said latch finger extension.

9. A hinge forseparably connectingthe cover and base sections of a. typewriter or other cabinet, said'hinge comprising a base section, a cover section, one said section having a pintle, the other said section having a pintle receiving socket to receive the pintle When-thesections are moved to present the pintle and socket in coaxial alinement and then relatively longitudinally to bring the pintle and socket into cooperative relation, andva pivotally movable spring latch engageable with one of the hinge sections to prevent separation of saidhinge sections and including a finger extension depressible to release the catch and permit separation of the hinge sections. V
