The present invention relates to devices for anchorlng a chain, cord, rod, or the like to ornamental pieces, such as pendants and the like. My improved anchoring device is dis- 5 closed in my prior Patent No. 1,850,934

granted March 22, 1932, and while it is illustrated, both in said patent and in the present instance, as associated with a pendant and a container for lipsticks, it is,-however, also adapted to be used in connection with plastic pieces which may be used for ornamenting chandeliers, dresses, hats, et cetera. Heretofore, a common manner of joining these ieces to a chain or the like was to provide a bore in the piece and insert an end of the chain in the bore and then run a rivet through the piece and the chain. This method, however, spoils theappearance of the piece because the head of the rivet shows on the outside thereof, thereby detracting from the beauty of the ornament.

It is an object of this invention to provide an improved anchoring device which will not in any way spoil or mar the appearance of the ornament with which it is used.

Another object of this invention is to provide an anchoring device of this kind which is effective in operation, and the anchoring effect of which is increased by any pulling force tending to dislodge the anchor.

A further object of this invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction and is economical to manufacture.

Other objects will be in part obvious, and in part pointed out more in detail hereinafter.

The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combination of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction herein-' after set forth and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the ap pended claims. y In the accompanying drawing, wherein is shown, for illustrative purposes, one of the embodiments which the present invention may take,

Referring more particularly to the drawing, A generally designates my improved anchoring device flormem'ber which is adapt- 5 ed to be received by 'a'member B which, in the present instance, is shown to'bea pendant. The member A is adapted to join a chain G to the elementfB, and the other'end of the chain may be secured to any desired v 0 article, such as a lipstick container D. The anchoring member A is formedfrom a piece of spring wire and is bent to form a loop 10 having arms 11 and 12 which cross as at w. The free end of the arm 11 is provided with a hook oreyelet 13, while the free end portion 14 of the arm 12 is inclined at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the member A and the end thereof is substantiallyfiat, as at The member A is adapted tobe confined within a bore or. recess 17 provided in the pendant B, and the diameter of this bore 17 is such that, when the member A is pushed home thereint'o', the loop of the'memb'er A will be made smaller, and the arms '11 and 12 of the member A will be urged towards one another thereby causing the sharp edge 16 of the member A to bite into the wall of the boreof the .pendant i c In the use of the device, the hook 13 ofthe member A is threaded through an end link of chain C. The member A is then pushed homelin the bore '17 of the pendant B. This as the end of the arm 14 will ride" over the wall of the bore 1-7jwithoutthe edge'lG' biting thereinto'; As shown 'in Fig. 1, when the member A is pushed home, the free end of the hook 13 will be wholly disposed with in'the, bore of the pendantjB so that the end I I link of the'chain C cannot'escape from the r hook; It will also. be noted that the sharp edge 16 of the member A will bite into the wall of the bore 17 of the pendant B since. the end portion 14 of the arm 12 is disposed at an angle to the wall of the bore 17 of the pendant B and the diameter of the bore is such that it forces the arms of the member A towards each other and towards the opposite sides of the wall of the bore and, therefore, positively causes the sharp edge 16 of the arm 12 to bite into the wall of the bore 17. It is apparent that any pulling force exerted upon the member A will only cause the sharp edge lethereof to more firmly bite into the wall of the bore of the pendant B.

The other end of chain C may be secured to the container D as disclosed in my above 1 mentioned prior patent, or in any other suitable manner.

It is thus apparent that I have provided an anchoring device which will effectively secure the chain and ornament tegethei' and;

' 15 at the same time, will not in any way mar the appearance of the ornament. J

As many changes could be madein the above construction and many apparently widelydifi'erentembodiments of this invention could be made without departing] from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above, description or {shown in the accompanying drawing shall interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense. v, v p v It is also to be understood that the language used in the following claims is intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described and all "statements of "the scope of the invention which, as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetween.

I claim a's'm'y invention: 1. In combination, a member having a relatively long recess therein and an anchoring device formed of a'single piece ofs fing wire and having a loop with a pair of crossed arms, said loop being under compression within said recess, one of said arms having its 40 end disposed at an angle to the wall of the recess and adapted to bite thereinto and the end of the other of said arms being provided with means for connecting the anchoring de- 3: vice to ach'a'in or the like. i 2. An anchoring device adapted to anchor a chain to a member having a recess, comprising a member formed of a single piece or wire and having a loop with a pair or crossed arms at one end, one of "said arms being disposed at an angle to the general length of the device and havingan edge at its free'e'nd adapted to bite into the wall of the recess. which the device is placed, the "other of said arms extending beyond the first as one and being provided with a hook a p ed to be connected to a chain or the like.
