EQUIPMENT COMPANY, or LOS,.|A1\TGELES,GALIF0RNIIA, A coRroR rrIon or CALI- ROTARY DRAW WORKS WITH- ADJ .USTABLEIJAGK, SHAFT Application filed May 14,
This inventionconsists iofla novel means for adjusting. the :position of asprocket .or a pair of. sprockets .or their equivalents, so
that the endless member or members which extend around the sprocketsor sprockets. may have the proper tension. My invention is notonly 'combinatively new in' its entirety, but the combination ofcertainparts is new.
My invention has a particularntility on rotary draw works used'inthe. oil well dri1lingindustry,and in view of this I choose to illustrate my invention embodied in a rotary draw works. p
In'order that the utility and advantages of my invention may be fully. appreciated, I
' shall briefly refer to the oilwelldrillingindustry. The rotary draw works is mounted at one side of the derrick floor, and has a line shaft by which the spooling drum is driven. The type of draw works in which my invention is incorporatedhas a jack shaft which is mounted nearthe derrick floor below the line shaft. The line shaft' operates the jack shaft by means of a sprocket and chain connection. The rotary tableywhich is situated near the center of the. derrick floor, is drivenby means of avsprocket and chain connection with the jack shaft. For
best operating results the .chains'should be draw works 10emb0dying my inventionincludes" a frame having uprights 11,12, ,and
It is another object of this invention, to provide an adjustment means whereby a shaft may be repositioned by beingmoved in two directions in planes at-right angles to .theYaXis of the'shaft.
By incorporating this feature in the jack shaft of the rotarydraw works, it' is possible to adjust the tension on either or both of the chains associated therewith by repositioning the ack shaft.
A further object of this invention is" to 1 928. Serial No. 327, 44.,
provide an. adjustment means for a shaft,
the shaft "being non-rotatable .and 'rotatably supporting a pair of sprockets or their equivalent;'
, Ajstill' further'obj-ect of my invention is to provide acombinationwhichincludes a Fig. 3 is an enlargedand verticalcrosssectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1'. V v
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view taken on thelinelofFig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a section showingjthe jack shaft assembly in section. 2
Referring specifically to the drawings, the
18, which extend betweenan anchor-base 15 and a headboard 16 of a derrick, only a por tion ofwhich derrick is shown. This derrick forms part of a rotary drilling rigsuch as is draw works 10 has a combined spooling and braking drum 2() rigidly mounted upon a rotatable shaft 21 which'journals in suitable bearings provided on uprightsll and 12.

The L Rotat'ably mountedfonthe shaft: 21 are sprockets 22, 23, and '24, any one of which is adaptedto bev nonqrotatably; locked-to the shaft 21. by suitable clutchmechani'sms. Extendingacrossthe draw works 10 above the spooling and braking drum 20, andijournaled in suitable bearings provided upon uprights 11, 12, and13, is a line shaft 25, which is adapted to be. rotated by a sprocket .26 V driven through a suitable sprocket chain. from a holes 60, is a plurality of shims 63. steam engine or other source of power. Sprocket pinions 27, 28, and 29 are nonrotatably mounted on the line shaft 25 and are connected by sprocket chains to the sprockets 22, 23, and 24 respectively so that when any one of the latter three sprockets is non-rotatably connected to the shaft 21, this shaft and the spooling and braking drum 20 are rotated by the line shaft25. The different ratios between the diameters of the connected sprockets mentioned above make it possible to drive the shaft 21 by the shaft 25 at any one of three speed ratios.
Provided on opposite-ends of the line shaft 25 are catheads and 86, which are normally disposed at aboutthe height of a mans head and are provided for drawing in upon a rope, loosely wound about one of these catheads by one. of the workers. Rotatably mounted on the line shaft 25, between the sprocket 29 and the upright 13, is a drive sprocket 40 which is adapted to be non-rotatably connected by a clutch 41 to the line shaft 25'by the operation of a suitable controlling mechanism 42.
Constructed on the anchor base 15 is a derrick floor 45 and disposed parallel with and close to this floor is a jack shaft 46, the
opposite ends of which are supported in brackets 47 and 48 mounted on the lower ends ofuprights 12 and 13 respectively. The ack shaft 46 is cylindrical and is provided with end portions 49, each having a flat lower face 50. The jack shaft end portions extend across and are supported by the brackets 47 and 48. Each of these brackets'includes a base member which is connected by bolts 56 to one of the uprights 12 and 13. The
. base 55 extends outwardly and downwardly 40 to provide a clamp j aw 57 having a recess 58 which opens upwardly. The opposite side faces 59 and 60 of the recess 58 are preferably parallel to each other and this recess is open at both ends, as clearly shown in Fig. 4. Suitable holes 60 are provided in the jaw 57 for a purpose to be described later.
Resting in the recess 58 and supporting a plate 62, which has apertures aligned with The end portions 49 of the jack shaft 46 rest upon the central portion of the plates 62. Fitting over the end portions 49 of the jack shaft 46 are cavities 64 eccentrically provided in a The caps 65 have holes 66 which are aligned with the apertures in the plates 62 and with the holes 60 so that bolts 68 may extend upwardly through the holes 60, through the plates 62 and the holes 66, and bind the caps 65 against vthejack shaftends 49 soas to rigidly positionthe jack shaft 46 upon the "brackets 47 i and 48.
As will be noted in Fig. 3, the eccentric cavities 64 are so formed that when the caps 65 are removed, turned 180 on a vertical axis,
and replaced over the jack shaft ends 49, the caps 65 are in the positions indicated by broken lines 70 in Fig. 3. This causes the jack shaft 46 to be moved a slight distance toward the uprights 12 and 13. Likewise, by loosening the bolts 68, some of the shims 63 may be removed or additional shims inserted between the jaws 57 and the plates 62 so that when the bolts 68 are again tightened, the jack shaft 46 will be a greater or less distance than previously from the line shaft 25. a
Rotatably mounted on the jack shaft 46 is a jack shaft sprocket member 72 having a driven sprocket 7 3 and a drive sprocket 74. The jack shaft sprocket member is supported by a bearing-71. The driven sprocket 7 3 is in alignment with the sprocket 40 and connected thereto by a suitable sprocket chain 75.
Mounted in the center of the derrick floor 45 isa rotary table'7 8, which'is adapted for rotating a drill pipe extending into the Well. The rotary table 7 8'is adapted to be driven by rotation of a shaft 79 provided with a pinion sprocket 80. The sprocket 80 is in alignment with the drive sprocket 74 of the draw works 10 and a sprocket chain 81 extendsaround and connects these sprockets.
The feature of my invention, as previously pointed out, is the adjusting means. In the present embodiment the tension of the chain 81 is adjusted by reversing the position of the caps 65 which moves the jack shaft 46. and the sprocket member 72 away from thesproc-ket 80. The tension of the chain is adjusted by removing or inserting shims 63 which lowers or raises the jack shaft 46 and'the sprocket member 72.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a rotary draw works the combination of: a plurality of upright frame members; a line shaft rotatably mounted on upper portions ofsaid members; a jack shaft; a drive sprocket on said jack shaft adapted to be connected by a sprocket chain with a rotary table for driving the same; means for driving said drive sprocket from saidline shaft; brackets provided upon lower portions of said iiprigh ts and adapted to support said i jack shaft, each of said bracketsv having an upwardly opening recess across which an end of said jack shaft extends; positioning means applicable to said jack shaft ends and fitting into said recesses of said brackets in A a plurality of positions to vary the distance between said jack shaft and said rotary table, the distance between said jack shaft and said line shaft, or both of said distances; and
means for securing said positioning means to c said brackets. V
2. In combination: a first shaft; a second shaft; a third shaft; a first drive means associated' with said first and third shafts; a second drive means associated with said second and third shafts; a base; a cap having a non-central cavity in which said tliird shaft rests; means for securing said cap to said base in a normal or reverse position, thus rendering said cap and said third shaft adjustable toward or from one of the other shafts; and shim means whereby said cap and said third shaft may be moved toward or from said base, thus giving an adjustment between said I third shaft and the other of said first and second shafts.
3. In a rotary draw works the combination of: a plurality of upright frame members; a line shaft rotatably mounted on upper portions of said members; a jack shaft; a drive sprocket on said jack shaft adapted to be connected by a sprocket chain with a rotary table for driving the same; means for driving said drive sprocket from said line shaft; brackets provided upon lower portions of said uprights and adapted to support said jack shaft; and means for mounting said jack shaft on said brackets, said mounting means being shiftable on said brackets to vary the distance of said drive sprocket from said rotary table, the distance between said jack shaft and said line shaft, or bothof said distances, and in which each of said brackets has a recess opening upwardly and across which an end of said ack shaft extends, said mounting means including clamp members, one of which is adapted to fit into each of said recesses and to be thereby held against lateral movement, each of said clamp members having an offset cavity fitting said ack shaft, said cavity changing its location relative to the bracket supporting that clamp member when said member is changed from one to another of a plurality of positions in which it fits into the recess in that bracket.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at Los Angeles, California, this 4th day of May, 1928.
