The invention consists in the novel features and in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pressing machine embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a diagrammatic view showing the means for controlling the opening and closing of the press and the means for disconnecting or discontinuing the power when the press is closed;

This pressing machine comprises, generally, cooperating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, power means for actuating the movable element including an electric circuit, an electric motor or motor means connected in said circuit manually operable means for controlling the flow of current through the motor to open and close the press and an automatic or over load switch controlled by the load on the motor created by the pressure between the pressing elements when the press is closed for stopping the motor by opening the motor circuit.
The pressing machine may be of any suitable form, size and construction, that here shown comprising cooperating pressing elements as a buck 1 and a head 2-movable toward and from the buck 1, the buck 1 being suitably mounted upon a-standard or goose neck 3 which is carried on a conventional frame 4. The head 2 is carried at the forward end of a yoke or lever 5 pivoted at'6 between its ends to a standard 7 rising from the frame.
The means for actuating the head '2 in addition to the lever 5 includes an electric motor 8, a shaft '9 connected to the motor shaft and at 18 to the rear arm of the yoke 5. The head 2 is counterbalanced by a suitable Weight 19 and spring 20 which acts to raise the head 2 or open the press when there is no force tending to hold the press closed. The motor shaft 10 is here shown as coupled to a shaft 21 suitably journalled in a housing 22 and having a worm 23 thereon which meshes with the worm gear 24 mounted on the shaft 9, the shaft 9 being also journalled in the housing 22. The worm wheel 24 is rotatably mounted relatively to the shaft and is connected to the shaft to drive the same through ratcheting clutch teeth 25 formed on the hub 26 of the worm wheel 24 and on a clutch section 27 keyed to the shaft 9 and shiftable axially thereon and restrained from axial shifting movement by a spring 28. When the worm wheel 24 is being actuated by the motor, obviously the shaft 9 will be actuated through the clutch teeth 25, and also owing to the clutch teeth 25, the shaft 9 can over-run or ratchet ahead of the worm gear 24, this occurring when the head 2 is being raised by the weight 19 and terweight 19 and spring 20 will complete the opening of the press and in so doing rotate I the crank 11 and shaft 9 ahead otthe worm wheel 24, this relative movement being per mitted by the ratcheting clutch teeth 25.
The means for controlling the closing of the press comprises an electric circuit in which the motor is connected and a pair of push buttons or manually operable spring pressed switches for convenience called push buttons arranged in series in the feed circuit.
30 and 31 are the legs of the said circuit in which the motor 8 is connected and 32 and 33 are the push buttons connected in series in the circuit so that both push buttons must be held depressed during the entire closing operation. Thepush buttons, without reference to the switches controlled thereby, are operating members.
To open the press, these two push buttons 32, 33 may be held depressed but it is desirable that the press may be opened quickly by a momentary closing of the circuit, and therefore a circuit with a single switch for convenience called a push button is provided in series in the motor circuit and in shunt with the push buttons 32, 33.
34 designates the push button for opening the press and in order that the operator may not unconsciously hold the push button 34 down too long and hence hold the circuit closed through the motor long enough to cause the head 1 to come down again and also in order to prevent the closing of the head by the push button 34 instead of using both push buttons 32,33, an additional switch 35 is provided which is momentaril closed by the push button 34. The switc 35 coacts with a pair of contacts 36, 37 which are connected in series with the motor through the wires 38, 39. The push button 34 is located within a suitable casing 40 and is held in its elevated position by a spring 41, and the switch 35 is also mounted within the casing 40 and moves into closed position against the action of a returni-n spring 41. The movement of the button 34 is transmitted to the switch 35 through means having a ratcheting action after the switch 35 is closed, which ratcheting action permits the switch 35 to open regardless of how long the operator holds the button 34 depressed.
As here illustrated, the push button34 is provided with a laterally extending arm 42 coacting with a similar arm 43 on a head 44 i of the switch 35, the arm 43 being arranged in the path of the arm 42 and one or the other of these arms being flexible to permit the arm 42 to pass bv and clear the arm 43 after the arm 43 has been depressed far enough to actuate the switch 35 in contact with the contacts 36, 37.
The push buttons or switches 32, 33 are also located within suitable housings 45, 46 and are pressed to open position by returning springs 47, 48. Each of these push buttons operates to move a spring pressed contact 49 or 50 within the casing 45 or 46 into engagement with a fixed contact 51 or 52 within the casing 45 or 46. The contacts 49, 51; 50, 52 are connected in series in the feed circuit wires 30, 31 for the motor.
The means for automatically cutting out the motor when the pressure between the pressing elements has reached a desired or predetermined amount comprises an overload switch in series with the motor and the push buttons 32. 33.
53 designates the over load switch or circuit breaker as a whole, it comprising a manually closable and normally open switch 54, meansfor holding the switch 54 closed after it is closed, and an electromagnetic means for opening the switch when the load on the motor reaches a predetermined maximum. The switch 54 comprises a pair of contacts 55, 56, a head 57 movable into engagement with the contacts to bridge them and means as a push button 58 for operating the switch head 57 against the action of a returning spring 59. This push button 58 is operated by one or the other of the push buttons or operating members 32, 33 and as here illustrated, the push buttons 32, 58 are provided with arms 60, 61 similar to the arms 42, 43 of the push buttons 34, 44. In Figure 2, the push buttons 32, 33 are shown as depressed as well as the push button 58. During the depression of the push button 32, the arm 60 engages the arm 61 and depresses the push button 58 until the arm 60 ratchets past the arm 61 so that the push button 58 is free to open by its spring when released. These connections between the operating member and the switch permit the operating member to, return to its normal position independently of theswitch when the switch is closed and also permit the switch to return to its open position when released from the holding g means if the operating member is held in its operated position by the operator.

the other end of which is connected through a binding device 71 to a wire 7 2 connected to the contact 50. The contact 52 is connected by a wire 7 3 to the motor. The push buttons 32, 33, 34 are suitably grouped on the front side of the machine as shown in Figure 1.
In operation, assuming that the press is open, the operator depresses both push buttons 32, 33 and during the depressing of the push botton 32 the arm 60 depresses the arm 61 and hence the push button 58 carrying the switch head 57 into contact with the contacts 55 and 56 and the detent 62 looks the switch push button 58 in its operative position. Full depression of the push button causes the arm 60 to pass or ratchet by thev arm 61 so that the push button 58 is free to move upwardly when the detent is released. If the operator takes his hands off from either button, the circuit through the motor will be opened owing to the separation of the contacts 49, 51,'or 50, 52. Thus, in order to keep the motor running to close the press, both push buttons 32, 33 must be held down.
IVhen the press is closed, in order that it may not immediately open up, but remain closed as long as desired by theoperator, and in order that the operator may not have to exercise any judgement as to when the press is closed, the automatic means is provided for'cutting out the motor when the press is closed and apredetermined pressure which creates an over load 'on the motor is applied so that the flow of current feeding to the motor increases and hence builds up the magnetic field of coils 63 causing the coils to attract the armature 64 and hence release the switch 57 so that the feed circuit through the motor' is broken, and the press closed and the parts in the position shown in Figure 1.
To open the press, the operator depresses the push button 34 and in so doing momentarily depresses the head 44 to close the circuit across the contacts 36, 37 so that the motor is merely actuated long enough to carry the cam or roller 11 out of its dead center line and the weight 19 and spring 20 will complete the opening of the press head. This application isrefiled for abandoned application 39,026, filed June 23, 1925.
What I claim is:
1. In a pressing machine, the combination of cooperating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, power means for actuating the movable element including an electric circuit, an electric motor connected in said circuit, a pair of push buttons connected in series in said circuit, automatic means for breaking the circuit when the press is closed and a third push button switch connected in series with the motor and in shunt with the former push buttons, the third push button switch having melans for holding it closed momentarily on y.
2. In a pressing machine, the combination of cooperating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, power means for actuating the movable element including an electric circuit, an electric motor connected in said circuit, a pair of push buttons connected in series in said circuit, automatic means for breaking the circuit when the press is closed and a third push button switch connected in series with the motor and in shunt with the former push buttons, the third push button switch having means for holding it closed and momentarily only and means acting on the movable pressing element for opening it after the initial opening impulse is given thereto.
3. In a pressing machine, the combination of cooperating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other and counterbalancing means connected to the movable element to open it, power means for actuating the movable element including an electric circuit, an electric motor connected in said circuit, an overload switch. in said circuit, a manually operable member for closing the over load switch, a normally open manually operated switch in said circuit operable when said manually operated member is actuated to close the overload switch and motion transmitting means between the motor and the movable pressing element.
4. In a pressing machine, the combination of cooperating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other and counterbalancing means connected to the movable element to open it, power means for actuating the movable element including an electric circuit, an electric motor connected in said circuit, motion transmitting means between the motor and the movable element, an over load switch in said circuit, a manually operableswitch .connected in series in said circuit with the overload switch, motion transmitting connections between the manually operable switch and the overload switch whereby the overload switch is closed when the manually operable switch is actuated, and said connections including ratcheting means whereby the overload switch is free of the manually operable switch after said overload switch is closed.
5. In a pressing machine, the combination of cooperating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other and counterbalancing means connected to the movable element to open it, power means for actuating the movable element including an electric circuit, an electric motor connected movable pressing element, an overload switch in said circuit, a normally open manually operated switch connected in series in said circuit with the overload switch, connections between the manually operated switch and the movable member of the overload switch whereby the overload switch is closed by the closing movement of the manually operated switch, said connections including parts, one of which ratchets past the other and thereby. leaving the overload switch free of-the manually operated switch after the overload switch is closed and another switch connected in said circuit in shunt with the former switches, and having means for momentarily closing the circuit.

In a pressing machine, the combination of cooperating elements, one of which" is movable toward and from the other, power means for actuating the movable element ineluding an electric circuit, an electric motor 7 connected in such c1rcu1t, a manually operated normally open switch connected in said circuit having means tending to open it, an overload switch operable by the increase in current fiow effected by the retardation of the motor caused by the increase in the load, when a predetermined maximum pressure is reached between the elements, the overload switch including 'a normally open switch member, and connections between the first and second switches. whereby the operation of the manually operated switch closes the member of the overload switch, said connections including ratcheting'means whereby the overload switch member is free of the manually operated switch member after the overload switch member is closed by the manpally operated switch.
In a pressing machine the combination of cooperating elements, one of which is movable toward'and from the other, power means for actuating the movable element including an' electric circuit, an electric motor connected in such circuit, a manually operatednormally' open switch connected in said circuit having means tending to open it, an
overload switch having its coilconnected in the circuit closable by said manually operable switch, the overload switch being operable by the increase in current flow efi'ected by the retardation of the motor caused by the increase in the load when a predetermined maximum pressure is reached between the elements, a second normally open manually operated switch connected in said circuit in shunt with the formerswitches, and means tending to open the press whereby a momentary operation of the third effects the opening of the press.

In a pressing machine the combination of cooperating elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, power means for actuating the movable element including an electric circuit, motion transmitting means between the motor and the movable element, an electric motor connected in such circuit, a manually operated normally open switch connected in the circuit having means tending to open it, an overload switch having its coil connected in the circuit closable by said manually operable switch, the overload switch being operable by the increase in current flow effected by the retardation of the motor caused by the increase in the load when a predetermined maximum pressure is reached between the elements, a second normally open manually operated switch connected in said circuit in shunt with the former switches, means tending to open the press whereby a momentary operation of the third switch effects the opening of the press, said motion transmitting means includ-' which is movable toward and from the other into and out of pressing coaction therewith, power means for actuating the movable ele ment including an electric circuit, an electric motor connected in said circuit, means for transmitting the motion of the motor to the movable element and locking the press closed, means'for controlling the actuation of the motor and the stopping thereof when in closed position comprising a normally open switch in said circuit, an overload electromagnet in said circuit for opening theswitch, a spring pressed normally open and manually operable switch connected in series in said circuit with, the electro-magnet and movable to open position by its spring when the force applied by the operator to close it is released, means between the second mentioned switch and the overload switch for closing the overload switch upon the closing of the manually operable switch, and a lock for holding the overload switch in its operated position, said motion transmitting means comprising two coacting parts associated respectively with the overload switch and the second mentioned switch and coacting with a ratcheting action to permit one part to pass the other and permit the overload switch to return to its open position independently of the manually op-.
to its open position when the force applied by the operator to close it is released, the switch being connected in, said circuit, an overload switch having its coil connected in said circuit and closable by the manually operable switch, the overload switch being operable by the increase in current flow effected by the retardation of the motor when the press is closed in locked position, and connections between the manually operable switch. and the movable member of the overload switch to close the latter during the closing of the manually operable switch, the connections between the switches comprising two coacting motion transmitting parts connected respectively to the switches and coactin g with a ratcheting action, permitting the manually operable switch to return to its open position independently of the overload switch and the opening of the overload switch independently of the manually operable switch.

In a pressing machine in combination cooperative pressing elements, one of which is movable with respect to the other, operating mechanism for the movable element including electric motor means, means to stop said motor means when the pressing elements have come together under desired'pressure including a circuit breaker operated by the current drawn by the motor means, the circuit breaker including a normally open switch, means for holding the switch in closed position, and means operated by the current drawn by the motor for releasing the holding means, the switch having means tending to open it when released, an operating member for closing the switch, and connections between the operating member and the switch by which the operating member is free to return to its normal position independently of the switch when the switch is closed and the switch is free to return to its open position when released from the holding means if the operating member is held in its operated position by the operator.

In a pressing machine in combination cooperative pressing elements, one of which is movable with respect to the other, operating mechanism for the movable element including electric motor means, means to stop said motor means when the pressing elements have come together under desired pressure including a circuit breaker operated by the current drawn by the motor means, the circuit breaker including a normally open switch, means for holding the switch in closed position, and means operated by the current drawn by the motor for releasing the holding means, the switch having means tending to open it when released, an operating member for closing the switch, and flexible connections between the operating member and the switch by which the operating member A is free to return to its normal position independently of the switch when the switch is closed and the switch is free to return to its open position when released from the holding means if the operating member is held in its operated position by the operator.

In a pressing machine in combination cooperative pressing elements, one of which is movable with respect to the other, operating mechanism for the movable element including electric motor' means, means to stop said motor means when the pressing elements have come together under desired pressure including a cut-out operated by the current drawn by the motor means, the cut-out member being normally in operative position to cut out the motor means from the current, a normally open switch in series with the cut-out, means for holding the cut-out in closed posit-ion, and means operated by the current drawn by the motor ,for releasing the holding means, the cut-out member having means tending to open it when released, an operating member to close the switch and for shifting the cut-out member to operative vposition and connections between the operating member and the cut-out member by which the operating member is free to return when released to its normal position independently of the cut-out member, and the cut-out member is free to return to its inoperative posiztion when released if the operating member is held in its operated position by the operator.

In a pressing machine in combination cooperative pressing elements, one of which is movable with respect to the other, operating mechanism for the movable element ineluding electric motor means, means to stop said motor means when the pressing elements have come togetherrunder desired pressure including a circuit breaker operated by the current drawn by the motor means, the circuit breaker including a normally open switch, means to hold the switch in closed position, and means operated by the current drawn-bythe motor for releasing the holding means, the switch having means tending to open it when released, an operating member for closing the switch, connections between the operating member and the switch by which the operating member is free to return to its normal position independently of the switch when the switch is closed and the switch is free to return to its open position when released if the operating member is held in its operated position by the operator, and a normally open switch operated by said operating member and being in series with the former switch.
