'rn'rns PATENT IMPlQOVEMENT m WHIPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. I S9,954, dated April 24, 1877; application filed March'3, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE P. OVERIN, of
the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Whip, of which the following is aspecilication:
1n the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a sectional side elevation of my improved whip, and Figs. 2 and 3 are horizonta]v sections of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention relates to an improved mode of manufacturing whips, so that the expensive whalebone may be dispensed with, and a whip of equal elasticity and durability obtained.-
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawing, and then pointed out in the claim. 1
In the drawing, A represents the center or core of an improved whip, which core is formed of one or more strings of gut. The core A is stiffened and filled out by rattan sections B, which are obtained by cutting or slicing up the rattan in sections, and tapering the sections by suitable machinery, to proper size and length,
in such a manner as to retain the enamel. The inner edgeis then planed off, as required, for the core. The joints are polished off to produce a uniform taper throughout the rattan section. Hitherto, the rattan sections have not been used with the enameled surface, as the pith only has been employed for these sections; but, by this method, the natural strength and elasticity of the outer or enameled surface are retained and utilized, and thereby, in connection with the gut-strings, a strong and durable yet elastic whip-stock produced, which is covered and finished in the same manner as heretofore.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim.
as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A whip, having a gut-core surrounded by rattan sections, substantially as shown and 7 described.
Gee. I. ovnmn.
