The present invention relates to a box and method of constructing the same and more particularly to a box of the so-called wirebound type and concerns itself with the construction of boxes longer than can be made on wire-bound box machines now in use.
Manufacturers of boxes of the wire-bound ype utilize machinery especially designed for making such boxes which machinery turns out the completed box blanks in unfolded condition, sans the end pieces, SO that the unfoded blanks plus the end pieces may be shipped in knock down condition to the users where the boxes are assembled into box form and filled. Because of the high cost of Such box making machinery present day machines are limited to turning out wire-bound boxes with maximum length of six feet.
The use of wire-bound boxes has increased to an extent where there is now great demand for wire-bound boxes longer than six feet in length.
The present invention therefore has for an object the method of and means for providing wire-bound boxes in excess of the present maximum length of six feet.
Another object of the present invention is to provide novel means for connecting together in endwise relation knock down box blanls for making" elongated wire-bound boxes greater in length than can be made on a single machine.
A further object of the invention is to pro- Vide a method for Connecting wire-bound box blanks together in endwise relation to pro- Vide boxes of increased length over the present maximum.
The above, other, and further objects of the invention will be apparent from the following description, accompanying drawing, and appended claim.
The accompanying drawing illustrates principles of the present invention and the views thereof are as follows:
Figure 1 is an isometric view of a completed wire-bound box made by joining together in endwise relation two. box blanks which blanks are joined in accordance with the principles of the present invention.
Figure 2 is an elevational View of an unfolded box blank unit, with the end pieces placed therein, of the present wire-bound type of box and showing applied thereto the illustrated form 'of connectors embodying principles of the present invention.
Figure 3 is an enlarged horizontal sectional View taken substantially in the plane of line III-III of Figure 1. y
Figure 4 is an enlarged Sectional View taken substantially in the plane of line IV-IV of Figure 5.
Figure 5 is a top plan view with the cover open of the box of Figure 1 showing the inside of the same with a unit connected together in endwise relation in accordance with the principles of the present invention.
The drawing' will now be explained.
The wire-bound box blank consists of four panels A, B, C,- and D fastened together by wires 1 and 2 with the panels separated So that the same may be folded into rectangular form to provide a box. Cleats 3, .4, 5, and 6 are attached to the ends respectively of'the panels A, B, C,`and D. The wires l and 2 and the cleats 3, i, 5, and 6 are fastened to the respective panels by staples 7 which staples hold the wire against the outsides of the panels and at the same time hold the panels against the cleats So that the blank may be readily made on a machine and turned out in finished form.
The panels A and C may be the sides and the panels B and D the bottom and top or vice Versa as desired.
The advantage of the wire-bound type of box is that it be made from inexpensive material .and at a minimum manufacturing cost because of the fact thatit is completely manufactured by machinery.
End pieces 8 and 9 are provided for closing the ends of the rectangular form of the blank when assembled in box shape which end pieces in the present instance are pro- Vided with hool: members 10 at each end thereof which hook members engage kerfs 11 formed in the cleats 3 and 5 of the side panels A and C. The hooks 10 are secured to the end members 8 and 9 by any suitable fastening means such as rivets or staples 12.
When it is desired to provide a wire-bound boX in excess of siX feet in length then connectors Such for instance as those herein illustrated at 13 are provided. The illustrated form of connectors is of metal bent into channel shape to provide end flanges 14 Which engage over the insides of abutting cleats of two box blanks arranged in endWise relation.
Wien it is desired to provide a Wire-bound boX in excess of six feet in length then two box blanks such as X and Y are provided in endwise relation and then the connectors 13 are applied With the flanges 14: thereof engaging over the uxtaposed cleats of the Various panels. These connectors are secured to the cleats preferably by nailing as at 15 so that the two blanks may be securely fastened together for assembly into reotangular form When desired for use.
The two blanks are arranged in endWise relationship in flat-Wise condition and the eonnectors 13 are applied over the juxtaposed Cleats of the several panels thus providing a Wire-bound bo): blank in excess of the maximum length of siX feet. The panels are then folded into rectangular form and the end panels in such instance Would be inserted in the outside ends Only and not in the intermediate ends as the intermediate ends now become a part of the interior of the elongated box and are not necessarily closed Off from the balance of the interior of the box by such end members. In this event the surplus end members are discarded.
There may be as many of these connectors 13 utilized as desired.
It has been found that elongated Wirebound boXes may be very readily and easily made in the manner herein described Which boXes have proved exceptionally eflicient in use.
The invention is claimed as follows:
A Wire-bound box comprising two Wirebound box blanks arranged in enewise abutting relationship, hook-like connectors applied over the juxtaposed eleats fastening together the juXtapOsed ends of the blanks, and nails fastening said connectors to' said cleats, the resulting blank so formed being folded into rectangular form and fastened in such form by the wire.
