rlhis invention relates to combination envelopes of the kind used for mailing articles, such as automobile license plates and registration cards, or catalogues and letters, in a a single package, which articles are subject to dilierent postal rates.

rlhis invention includes a large or main envelope, of the well-known commercial open end type, and a smaller envelope of preferio ably the open side type, provision being made to permit the two envelopes to be subsequently assembled so that the well-known methods and machines Jfor the manufacture of such envelopes may be employed. le ln carrying out the invention the larger envelope is provided with a slot, in one of its walls, through which the smaller envelope is inserted. The slot is preferably formed in the seam, of one of its walls, commonly 2e known as the center seam, said seam being left unsealed 'for part of its length to provide said slot.

In order to seal the smaller envelope, the seal ap thereof is pasted against the wall of the larger envelope. Provision is also made to seal the slot through which the smaller envelope is inserted. To this end one of the envelopes, preferably the smaller one, is provided with a gum stripe whereby the upper end of said smaller envelope is secured tothe body of the larger envelope adjacent to the slot.

Other objects and advantages will hereinafter appear.

Figure 2 is a transverse section on a larger scale taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1 and showing the smaller envelope partly removed;

Figure 3 is a view showing both envelopes open and the smaller one being inserted into the larger one;

Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 1, eX- cept that the smaller envelope illustrated therein is considerably larger than the one illustrated in Fi ure 1, this combination envelope being a apted for use in mailing 5o catalogues and letters;

Figures 6 is a view similar to Figure 5 and shows the smaller envelope inserted in place.

rl`he combination envelope 5 includes a large envelope 6, of the open end type, to contain an article such as a license plate 7. lt :further includes a smaller envelope 8 ot the open side type to contain'a registration c ard 9, the smaller envelope being insertable into the larger one and attachable thereto in a manner hereinafter described to form a single package.

The larger envelope includes a seamless wall 10 over which are folded side Haps 11 and 12, the latter overlapping the inner flap 11 and being provided with gum portions or 70 stripes 13 to form a seam with the flap 11, the gum being applied not entirely throughout the length of the same so as to provide a slot 14 through which the smaller envelope 8 is inserted into the larger one.

rlhe smaller envelope 8 is provided with a seal flap 15 having thereon a gum strip 16 whereby the seal flap may be secured to the wall or body of the envelope as, Jfor example, to the outer end of the side flap 12 of the 80 larger envelope. There is also provided a gum stripe 17 which may be on the smaller envelope and whereby it may be secured to the side flap 11 of the larger envelope to seal the slot 14, thus preventing other articles, 85 such as letters, from being accidentally inserted into or caught in the envelope while the same is passing through the mail, Both of the envelopes 6 and 8 are provided with windows 18 and 19, respectively, through 90 which the name and address, on the enclosure of the smaller envelope, such as a registrationcard, may appear.

When the combination envelope 1s used for other enclosures, such as catalogues and letters (Fi ure 4) the envelope 8 may be of greater dimensions as compared with the envelope 6, the latter. being of a s1ze suitable for catalogues and the former of a s1ze sultable for letters.

It will be understood that in this type of combination envelope it is advantageous to have the side flap 11 extend substantially to the opposite side of the envelope 6 so as to serve as a guard or protector for the smaller envelope 8 to prevent obstruction by the smaller envelope of the article subsequently inserted into the larger envelope.

In the modification illustrated in Figures 5 and 6, the slot 14a, through which the small envelope is inserted, is formed in the seamless wall 10a of the larger envelope 6a. Said slot is so located sufliciently above the bottom edge of the envelope 6a that the envelope 8, when inserted, overlaps the wall 10a sufficientlyv to permit securing of the envelope 8 to the wall 10a by means of the gum strip 17, thus sealing `the slot 14a. The smaller envelope is sealed by pasting the seal flap against that portion of the wall 10a immediately below the slot 14a. The latter is also provided with a; transparent window patch 20.

I have described what I believe to-be the best embodiment of my invention. I do not, however, desire to limit myself to the embodiment described, but what I desire to cover by Letters Patent is set forth in the appended claims.

1. A combination 'envelope comprising a relatively large envelope of the open end type, said lar e envelope including two overlapping side aps, means to secure said flaps to each other for part of their length to form a center seam with a slot therein, and a relatively smaller envelope of the open side type having a seal flap, the smaller envelope having a seal flap and being received in said slot so that the seal flap thereof may be sealed down against the outer edge of one of the side fiaps of the larger envelope, and means whereby the smaller envelope may be sealed at its upper edge against the other side flap of the large envelope to provide a closure for said slot.

2. A combination envelope comprising a large envelope and a. small envelope, the larger envelope having two walls, one of said -walls having a slot therein through which the small envelope may be inserted, the small envelope having a seal flap to be folded overA and secured to a portion of said wall adjoining the slot, and a gum stripe on one of said envelopes to secure the smaller envelope at its upper edge to the'wall of the larger envelope to seal said slot.

3. A combination envelope comprising a larger envelopeincluding a seamless wall, an inner side flap of a width to extend substantially across the seamless wall of. said envelope, an outer side flap extending partly over the inner side flap, means to form a partly open seam between said side flaps to provide a slot therebetween, a smaller envelope, the latter having a seal fla the smaller envelope being insertable into t e larger one through said slot so that the seal flap may be secured to the outer flap of the larger envelope to seal the smaller envelope, and a gum stripe on one of the envelopes whereby said smaller envelope may be secured to the innler ap of the larger envelope to seal said s ot.

4. A combination envelope comprising a larger envelope of the open end type, the latter including aseamless wall, an inner side flap, of a width to extend substantially across the seamless wall of said envelope, an outer side Hap extending partly over the inner side flap, means to form a partly open seam between said side flaps to provide a slot therebetween, and a smaller envelope of the open.

5. A combination envelope comprising a large envelope and a small envelope, the larger envelope having two walls, one of said walls having a slot therein through which the smaller envelope may be inserted, the small envelope havin a seal flap to be folded over a portion of t e wall adjoining the slot and secured thereto, and a gum stripe on the small envelope to secure it at its upper edge to the large envelope to seal said slot, said larger envelope and said smaller envelope having each a window, the windows to register with each other.

6. A combination envelope comprising a large envelope and a smaller envelope, the larger envelope having a seamless wall, said wall having a slot therein throu h which the smaller envelope may be inserte the smaller envelope having a seal flap to be folded over a portion of the wall below and adjoining the slot and secured thereto, the slot bein located a distance from the bottom edge w ich is less than the height of the small envelope so as tocause the upper end of the latter to overlap a portion of the wall immediately above the slot, a gummed stripe on one of said envelopes to secure-the smaller envelope to the larger envelope at the ortion of the wall above said slot to seal t e latter, said large envelope and said small envelope having each a window, the windows to register with each other.
