IMPROVEMENT IN FASTENINGS FOR BUTTONS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 189,419, dated April 10, 1877; application filed March 8, 1877.

- To all whom it may concern 2 is a like view of the same as employed in attaching a button to or upon leather or fabme. it appears upon the inner side of the leather or fabric, and Fig. 4=is asection upon line a: m of Fig. 3.

Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.

The design of my invention is to enable buttons to be securely and easily attached to shoes, garments, 860.; and it consists in the peculiar form of the fastening employed, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.

In the annexed drawing, A represents my fastener, which is constructed of or from wire, and at one end is provided with a loop, a, that is arranged at a right angle to the body of said fastener, and at its opposite end has an 2 arm, a, which extends laterally in a line parallel with said loop, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3.

' Immediately inside of the loop a the body of the fastener A is curved upward, as seen in Figs. 1 and 4, said ofiset a being arranged in a plane which has a right angle to the plane of said loop, and located midway between the ends of said fastener.

The device is now complete, and is applied Fig. 3 is a plan view of said fastener as' as follows: The fastener is placed with the loop a at a right angle to the inner face of the leather or fabric B. The arm a is passed through the latter, through the eye 0 of a button, O, and then backward through said cloth or fabric, after which said fastener is pushed forward and turned so as to cause the offset a to be upon the outer side, while said loop a and arm a are against and in a line with the inner side of the fabric B.

As thus arranged, the button is securely attached to fabric or leather, and all strain upon said button is thrownupon a considerable portion of the latter, while from the shape of the fastener upon the inner side of said fabric no inconvenience can arise from its pressure upor replaced, and the attachment of a button to a shoe or a garment is an operation that requires but a moments time. When attached by said fastener, a button will sustain many times the amount of strain that would be possible were said button sewed in place, while no practicable amount of wear can destroy its attachment.

Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new is- The hereinbefore-described button-fastener A, constructed from wire, and provided with the loop a, arm a, and ofi'set a, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
